The Maria Anna Mozart Award Launched in 2016, the Maria Anna Mozart Award supports the work of Canadian women composers, providing funds for Symphony Nova Scotia to commission and perform a new symphonic work by a Canadian woman every three years. The award is the first of its kind in Canada, and was made possible through the generosity of Halifax resident and Symphony supporter Dr. Jane Gordon. Symphony Nova Scotia proudly performed the world premiere of inaugural award recipient Dr. Kelly-Marie Murphy’s Dragon, Unfolding on International Women’s Day. Thank you to Dr. Jane Gordon for her vision and the Women for Music for sponsoring this concert.

Summer Season Symphony Nova Scotia’s first-ever Summer Symphony Series offered free concerts and special events across Halifax. Concerts at Pier 21, Alderney Landing, and Halifax Central Library celebrated Nova Scotia’s vibrant musical landscape and heritage. Symphony Nova Scotia, singer Reeny Smith, and drummer Trevor Gould brought together Mi’kmaw chants and drumming, African-Nova Scotian songs, Acadian fiddling and dancing, and new symphonic music.
