CAFF’s member festivals have worked together for Fringe and Fringe Festival are registered trademarks more than thirty years to pioneer a made-in-Can- of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals ada model unique in the . Our festivals (CAFF) and cannot be used without expressed are designed to put artists and audiences in direct written permission from the Association. This trade- contact, fostering experimentation and discovery on mark allows CAFF to ensure that any festival both sides of the fourth wall. in that wishes to call itself “Fringe” must abide by the CAFF mandate and the four guiding A Long History principles. The first Canadian Fringe was the Edmonton Fringe Festival, established in 1982. Inspired by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which began in 1947, the success and growth of Edmonton’s adapted formula soon led to the creation of Fringe Festivals across Canada and the United States. Each festival evolved its own flavour to match the distinct personality of its home city, yet each remained dedicated to the Fringe philosophy of accessible, inexpensive and fun theatre-going. Fringe Ideals The Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals was formed to protect these four guiding principles, still in place today: • Participants will be selected on a non-juried basis, through a first-come, first served process, a lottery, or other method approved by the Association. • The audience must have the option to pay a ticket price, 100% of which goes directly to the artists. • Fringe Festival producers have no control over the artistic content of each performance. The artistic freedom of the participants is unrestrained. • Festivals must provide an easily accessible opportunity for all audiences and all artists to participate in Fringe Festivals.

august 29th - september 8th | halifax Fringe festival 2019 3 Fringe Horoscopes

Aries: Darling, passionate Aries, you are the definition of Hot (insert gender affirming word here) Summer, you put the “y” in Daddy, and it’s true that you have won almost all of the arguments you’ve ever started. Nobody loves as hard as you, fights as loud, fucks as well. Keep telling off strangers that cut in front of you in line, keep looking the perfect combo of hot and stern, keep judging bad interior design, keep being fiercely loyal. Since you’re so into winning - a challenge: practice the words “you were right” and forgive someone - anybody really. Challenge 2: do you really have to leave that negative Yelp review? Write a love poem instead. This week, go on an impulsive tinder date, eat spicy food, win an arm wrestling competition, invest in mesh.

Taurus: Devoted, stubborn Taurus, everyone has noticed how cute you look napping at the beach and the warm days have you turning heads in those denim cut-offs (why is your ass SO deli- ciously perfect??). You have eaten the best home-cooked brunches and you have mastered how to marinate and grill peaches expertly. Have the record show that you have done it again and fallen in love. A thought: is serial monogamy really for you or is it just convenient? Try not giving this new beau the keys to your apartment before the 8 month mark this time, and watch how much you’re spending on artisanal craft beer. Also, just because you are an average cuddler, does not mean that you get to be your obstinate, unyielding self alllllll the time. This week, practice apologizing in the mirror, try a recipe for olive oil ice cream, listen to pop music & catch a new crush.

Gemini: Charming, flakey Gemini, you have collected 37 new hobbies—word is that you’ve 1/2 bedazzled all of your pants, have 3 new love interests, and are teaching yourself how to speak French. You are a true and full genius, congrats. Hot tip: text your crushes back, they will eventu- ally get sick of waiting 8+ hours to hear back. Hot tip #2: clean your craft room, it looks like a gay tornado in there! Do you really need that many sequins? Hot tip #3: no, you do not need to learn a new skill, calligraphy can wait until next summer. This week, finish bedazzling your pants, sing a ballad at karaoke, wash your dishes, stop gossiping SO loudly, and yes yes yes...buy those red sunglasses.

Cancer: Sweet, sweet, sweetie-pie cancer, are you crying in the bathtub eating charcuterie again?? A challenge: try crying at a lake instead? That way you can get that Vit D and show off how good you look when processing your feelings. Babe, none of your friends are actually mad at you and your crush does in fact think that you are perfect and babely. You have succeeded in bringing your Big Mom Energy everywhere you go and it’s true that almost everyone in the city has fallen for your soft energy, pouty mouth, reliable backpack snacks, incredibly emotionally intelligent advice, and intense staring. You are truly an angel and a dream, again none of your friends are actually mad at you and your crush does in fact think that you are ~all that~. This week, find a typewriter to write your moody love poems on, bake snickerdoodles for a few cuties, go to the ocean, only wear comfortable and silky material.

Leo: Radiant and loud Leo, I know I know I know—you didn’t want your season to end because let me guess, “you were deeeep in your power”. I know that your dramatic ass is already lamenting the reality of Virgo season because now you can’t blame your avid online shopping, incessant flirting, overwhelming knowledge of showtunes, taking selfies during important work meetings, and yelling “I NEED MORE COMPLIMENTS” on the season anymore. You are a magnetic force of charisma and good hair days, keep it up—you’re right, all of your haters *are* probably just jealous. However, remember that not everything is a competition, stop driving 20 over the speed limit all the time, and practice hearing some constructive criticism without immediately seeking validation on instagram. This week, try hav- ing a night in, eat fancy treats, wink 10% less, tell your best friends how much you love them .

Virgo: Perfect and (overly) methodical Virgo, it’s your season! Revel in that back-to-school energy that exhilarates you and buy all of the post-it-notes that your heart yearns for, share your google calendar with someone special, colour code the hell out of those excel spreadsheets, LIVE BABY LIVE!! You are about to welcome so much adoration and abundance into your extremely orga- nized world, don’t be scared, it’s all for you, you deserve it. Another thing you deserve—easing up on that micromanagement, it will probably help with your stress headaches and feeling like a nit-picky bitch. This week, I challenge you to get a little messy... kiss with your lipstick on, sit on a cake, wear a patterned shirt, cry in public, eat Nutella right out of the damn jar, let someone else wear the harness, giggle loudly, happy birthday.

4 halifax Fringe festival 2019 | august 29th - september 8th Fringe Horoscopes

Libra: Diplomatic, flirty Libra, everyone is wondering if you actually have a crush on them or if you are just wildly indecisive, you should let them know instead of just batting your eyelashes and waffling about your political leanings. Your Instagram is looking A++, you have collected many suitors with those amazing cheekbones and coy looks, and you are everyone’s favourite friend because you agree with everyone. My humble opinion? Keeping the peace doesn’t get your needs met baby, tell us how you really feel. Also, try on being a little bit bossy and impulsive—it was just Leo season after all—and not everything has to be “fair” all the time. This week: flip your hair dramatically, wear a bold lip colour, assert 4 boundaries (and maintain them), put goat cheese on everything.

Scorpio: Sexy, mysterious, ghoulish Scorpio—you’ve spent the summer practicing the occult, mak- ing absolutely no new friends, looking intimidatingly hot in leather, and taking all of your dates to the local cemetery to read their tarot to a curated Bauhaus playlist, we get it, you’re spooky. A few suggestions: trusting people is not a sign of weakness, charge your phone, stop sending “u up” texts to people you only sort-of like sleeping with, and ask for what you want so you can stop being so disappointed by people not being as intuitive as you. FYI all of your ex’s will forever be in love with you, you are on everyone’s apocalypse team, are scary talented, and are truly too irresistible for your own good. This week, think of a new date spot, wear velvet in the evening, write three secrets in your diary, return your siblings phone calls, have a lover feed you grapes.

Sagittarius: Audacious and inquisitive Sagittarius, this summer you have made 15 perfect mix- tapes, learned how to drive, created a lot of weird art all dedicated to Bjork, and spent most of your free time on couchsurfing websites. You don’t need me to tell you, go on that trip to Seattle! My humble opinion: adventure can’t distract you from your fear of commitment forever, and the city is only scary to you because you have to follow rules—come home from the woods. This week, finish one of the many ½ read books on your crowded shelf, buy an agenda already, stop wearing your flower crown from Osheaga in public, and have that threesome instead of just talking about it.

Capricorn: Determined and enterprising Capricorn, we get it—you paid off your student loans and just got a raise. Your self-advocacy skills and ambition are admirable and intimidating, you win—we all want you to top us into filing our taxes and meal prepping. Hot take: maybe more people would want to hangout with you if you weren’t constantly responding to work emails and complaining about how weak the café wifi is. You’re too good looking to care this much about the New York Times crossword. This week learn how to shuck oysters, do 7 “unproductive” things, use a sick day and go to the beach, give your phone number to your cute neighbour, don’t wear practical shoes.

Aquarius: Oh Aquarius, you brilliant and delightful weirdo—you are in the midst of a new creative venture and are currently collecting a variety of found objects for the up-coming installation in your backyard about how time is an illusion. You have been stalling on telling your partner of 1.5 years that you love them, and you haven’t been on time ever (but what is time except a byproduct of the capitalist assembly line amirite??). You already know what elaborate and ironic costume to make for Halloween, but you haven’t yet told your friend that it hurt your feelings when they cancelled last minute a few months ago. This week try to communicate your feelings, not just the intellectualization of your feelings, tell 3 people that you love them, play a synthesizer, smoke joints slowly in a lukewarm bath while listening to Alice Coltrane.

Pisces: Emotional, dreamy, emotional Pisces—as you read this, I am sure that you are wrapped in linens on a hammock drinking kombucha that you brewed last week while listening/ crying to a podcast all about Tracy Chapman’s hit Fast Car. You are envied for your artistic and inspired thoughts and emotionally intuitive nature. I will ask however, that you learn how to do your own emotional labour instead of just open mouth crying into all of your lovers patchouli scented shoulders. This week try pressing send on your work emails as you now have at least 112 emails in your drafts folder, acquire rose quartz, cuddle with puppies, wear the colour turquoise, and listen to Joni Mitchell. You are truly quite magic.

Bio: Carmel’s sun, moon, ascendant are all in Leo so if you see them around, spoil them with treats and compliments. They would like you to notice their perfect eyebrows and cutting wit. They are not (quite) a real astrologer but they want you keep your rude comments to yourself please. Also, you probably have a crush on them & you should absolutely let them know.

Thank you for joining us at the 29th Halifax Fringe Festival! As we come together to enjoy works of art in worlds of wonder, please prioritize kindness and respect! Let’s show off our east coast hospitality by searching for our similarities instead of focusing on our differences. Take time to appreciate the efforts of our performers and the vulnerabilities they are showing on stage. Thank the artists, volunteers and staff you meet; they give so much of their time and energy during Fringe and a smile or a kind word really brightens a day! My greatest hope for you during this year’s Fringe is that you will step outside your comfort zone and learn something new. Try sitting next to someone you don’t know; you may make a new friend. Better yet, ask a stranger to pick a show for you. These unplanned mo- ments can be magical and you never know where they might lead! Thank you for supporting the 2019 Halifax Fringe Festival. Every dollar collected at the box office goes directly to our artists so if you like what you see please tell a friend and reward their hard work. We are happy to welcome you to the Halifax Fringe Family!

April Hubbard Chair of the Halifax Fringe

Welcome to the 2019 Halifax Fringe Festival! As we come together to celebrate, I would like to begin by acknowl- edging that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in the community, on their territory. This year we’re back at Neptune and we’ve been so blown away by their patience, kindness, and generosity in welcoming us. Neptune will host 3 stages and be our Festival Hub. I look forward to seeing you there and grabbing a drink after the show. Remember: the Fringe returns 100% of ticket sales directly back to our artists. At free - $15, a Fringe Show is the best deal in town. So, I encourage you to take a risk – buy a ticket to something you might otherwise not, and discover an artist who might become a favourite. Fringing for the first time? Pick a sure bet, a recommended performance, and a show at random! Don’t forget, Fringe Festivals are open-access and uncensored events with affordable ticket prices for all. I look forward to seeing you there. Much love and Happy Fringing,

Lee-Anne Poole Executive Director

Pop your bottles of choice, it’s Halifax Fringe’s champagne birthday! In the three years I’ve worked with fringe, the festival has become like my cool older sibling. I am so excited to celebrate another year with Halifax. Turns out it’s a puppet show? Rad! Weirdo solo show? Sick! Gay stuff? Such a mood! This was my first year working with the festival all year long. Seeing the festival from application launch to opening ceremonies has been like giving birth to over 350 plays at once -- messy, painful, ecstatic, and beautiful. A celebration of diversity, accessibility, and openness, I am so proud to be part of yet another festival. Newcomers: welcome to something beautiful. Returning audiences, artists, and sponsors: thanks for dropping in again. Get your toes wet in the ocean of blood, sweat, and tears in 11 days of experimentation and play.

Wela’lioq, Lara Lewis

august 29th - september 8th | halifax Fringe festival 2019 11 WELCOME MESSAGES

As Mayor of Halifax and on behalf of Halifax Regional Council, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to everyone taking part in the 29th Annual Fringe Festival, taking place August 29th - September 8th, 2019.

Since 1991, the Fringe festival has welcomed all manner of performances to eager audiences. The result is a broad range of shows accessible to performers of every level and viewers of all kinds. Halifax Fringe is a welcome annual feature of the arts and culture landscape, contributing to the colorful personality of our city.

My heartfelt congratulations to everyone who has poured their passion into writing, performing and staging this year’s Fringe performances. To all of you who have volunteered your time and your talent, and to the audiences who continue to support the arts in Halifax, thank you. Enjoy the shows!

Kindest regards,

Mike Savage Mayor

Twenty-one years ago this landed-immigrant arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia to start a new life. I was fortunate enough to arrive to be on the Neptune Stage in the Summer of 1998, as an actor. Soon after arriving I discovered there was a Fringe Festival here. I submitted a play that I would direct (Blue Remembered Hills by Dennis Potter) and it would be my first directing experience in Canada, on the third floor of the Khyber in 30 degree heat to 25 people a show. We landed ‘Fringe Hit’ for that venue.

Cut to 2019, 21 fun-filled years later and I am now the Artistic Director of Neptune Theatre, located next door to the Khyber ( I can see the Turret Room from a window here) and I am now a Fringe Festival board member.

I believe it is vitally important that Neptune Theatre, as Nova Scotia’s Regional theatre, support and participate in the Halifax Fringe. Neptune is committed to the Nova Scotia theatre community and to ensure that our building is open to everyone. By participating in the Fringe I feel that Neptune is making good on a number of ideals. We are the regional theatre of ALL Nova Scotians. Our stories and our artists are welcome in our space, to create, to work and share their stories. Our involvement in the Halifax Fringe makes this AD very proud.

I hope you have an enriching Halifax Fringe. I hope you see shows in all the venues that excite you, challenge you; that make you laugh, think, cry, and stretch. You will see some shows you adore and some you really do not like at all! That’s the absolute best thing about Fringe. I congratulate and welcome all the creators and artists and on behalf of my colleagues at Neptune Theatre I wish you all a joyous Fringe 2019.

Jeremy Webb Artistic Director Neptune Theatre

Fringe is “comparable to the (candy) surprise bag I used to get as a kid,” says Richie Wilcox, Artistic Co-Producer of live art company Heist. “It was affordable and held a bunch of different things - DIRECTED by Jessica Oliver FEATURING Dan Bray + Audrey Eastwood some were my favourites, some were okay, some with Nicholas Cox were totally unexpected.” Bus Stop Theatre Co-op (2203 Gottingen St) Wilcox has had a number of shows at Fringe over the years, including, “perhaps infamously,” SHOWTIMES (PM) Aug 30: 5:30 Aug 31: 1:00 Sept 1: 10:00 Sept 2: 8:00 being named Fringe Hit for the queer musical Sept 3: 5:15 Sept 4: 6:30 Sept 5: 5:30 Sept 6: 1:00 adaptation of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof entitled Pussy on Sept 7: 12:40 Sept 8: 7:00 https://halifaxfringe.ca/ a Shingle in the early aughts. I was …..YOU WILL extremely delighted and surprised by the love Halifax showed for our little world we’d created WANT TO SMILE and so Fringe really did give the big push to launch The Princess Show into the world.” “And it really has gone into the world,” adds Wilcox. “We’ve done it in Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto, Fredericton, and who knows next.” A fol- low-up, Princess Rules, was also a success, taking home four Merritt Awards in 2018, and Collier says a third installment is in the works. Wilcox likes Fringe because of “how unpredict- able it all is. You can read a little blurb in the guide but I find I am always taken aback by how connect- ed I can be to a show I just happened across.” Did The The Princess Show evoke such a response? “Somebody did approach us to tell us how sur- prised they were,” says Collier, “because they had come into the show in a bad mood expecting to have to sit through and endure it and were instead uplifted by the experience.” #1 2069 HAMMONDS PLAINS ROAD “That person tells me that story every time I see HAMMONDS PLAIN, NOVA SCOTIA her and says how it was her favourite theatrical (902)835-6632 experience in Halifax,” says Wilcox. “ So we really turned her day around!”
