SCOTT HARTNELL RETIREMENT NIGHT The Flyers are honoring former winger Scott Hartnell in a pregame ceremony tonight. Hartnell retired this past summer after a 17-year career that saw him post 327 goals and 380 assists for 707 points in 1,249 NHL games. That included seven seasons in Philadelphia, during which time he recorded 157 goals and 169 assists for 326 points in 517 games, along with 908 PIM. The best season of his career came in the 2011-12 campaign, when he led the Flyers with 37 goals and was second on the roster with 67 total points. No Flyer has topped that 37-goal total in a single year since Hartnell hit it that season.

Hartnell also contributed 16 goals and 25 assists for 41 points in 75 career Playoff games for the Flyers. He appeared in all 23 games of the team’s run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010, posting eight goals and nine assists for 17 points.

Hartnell was acquired from Nashville on June 18, 2007 along with Kimmo Timonen in exchange for Nashville’s own first-round pick (previously acquired, Nashville selected Jonathon Blum) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He departed the Flyers on June 23, 2014 when he was traded to Columbus in exchange for R.J. Umberger, and last season he returned to the Predators to conclude his career. With Nashville, Hartnell had 106 goals and 129 assists for 235 points in 498 games.

FLYERS VS. PREDATORS This is the first of two games between the clubs this season. The Flyers will start 2019 in Nashville on January 1.

2017-18 SERIES

Tuesday, October 10, 2017 - Nashville 6, Flyers 5 at Bridgestone Arena: The Flyers scored five consecutive goals to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 5-3 lead, but the Predators took advantage of three late Flyer penalties to surge back for a 6-5 win. Nashville led 1-0 after one period and added two goals in the first 5:11 of the second, but the Flyers tied it with three goals in less than five minutes – Andrew MacDonald scored at the 10:19 mark, followed by Nolan Patrick’s first NHL goal 16 seconds later. Valtteri Filppula tied it on the power play with 4:55 left in the frame. The Flyers continued their charge with two more goals in short succession in the third – one from Travis Konecny 5:03 into the period and a second from Filppula 1:45 later. But Filip Forsberg got a goal back 50 seconds after Filppula’s second, which set the stage for a strange ending where Hartnell tied the game during a 6-on-3 situation created by two Flyers penalties and a pulled goaltender, and Forsberg won it on another PPG with just under 36 seconds remaining. Brian Elliott stopped 25 of 31 shots in the loss, while Pekka Rinne turned away 25 of 30. Stars of the Game: 1 – Filip Forsberg; 2 – Scott Hartnell; 3 – Samuel Girard.

Thursday, October 19, 2017 - Nashville 1, Flyers 0 at Wells Fargo Center: Colton Sissons scored what would end up being the game’s only goal 3:49 into the third period to lift the Predators past the Flyers. The Preds shut down five Flyer power-play opportunities, including a late 6-on-4 situation that spanned the final 1:06 of the game. Pekka Rinne made 28 saves to hold down the fort for Nashville, which placed 24 shots on Flyers goaltender Michal Neuvirth. Stars of the Game: 1 – Pekka Rinne; 2 – Colton Sissions; 3 – Travis Sanheim.

James van Riemsdyk tipped home a Claude Giroux shot with 1:27 left in the first period to open the scoring, and after Dennis Cholowski scored on a power play 4:12 into the second period, Radko Gudas regained the lead at the 8:52 mark and Gostisbehere expanded it with 4:43 left in the middle frame. Jacob De La Rose scored two minutes into the third, but that was the last the Red Wings would get past Carter Hart, who made 20 saves to win his NHL debut. Jonathan Bernier made 30 saves in the loss. NOTES OF THE NIGHT

Carter Hart on Monday became the youngest goaltender in Flyers history to win his NHL debut, doing so at age 20 years, 127 days. He’s the second-youngest Flyers goaltender to appear in a game, behind Maxime Ouellet, who made his debut in relief on Oct. 7, 2000 at 19 years, 112 days and made his first NHL start five days later on October 12, 2000 at 19 years, 117 days.

Hart became the fifth-youngest goaltender since 1996-97 to win his NHL debut, and the youngest since Carey Price did so on October 10, 2007 at age 20 years, 55 days.

Hart is the first goaltender in NHL history to wear jersey number 79, and the first Flyer at any position to wear it.

The Flyers on Monday named Scott Gordon as interim head coach, replacing Dave Hakstol. Gordon had been in his fourth season as the head coach of the Flyers’ affiliate, the . He was named to the position on July 13, 2015. In 254 games with the Phantoms, Gordon has a record of 144-86-15. He led the club back to the playoffs in 2017 after a seven- season absence, and in 2018 guided the Phantoms to the AHL’s Eastern Conference Finals

The Flyers continue to operate as the NHL’s best faceoff team with a 55.0 percent rating. The team’s six primary faceoff players are as follows:

Jordan Weal – 60.0 pct Scott Laughton – 58.9 pct Claude Giroux – 58.4 pct Sean Couturier – 54.7 pct Jori Lehtera – 53.8 pct Nolan Patrick – 53.4 pct

Of 145 players that have taken at least 145 faceoffs this year, Weal is leading the league. Laughton is third, while Giroux is fifth.

As a team, the Flyers have been 50 percent or better on faceoffs in 23 out of 32 games this season.

The Flyers are looking to shake a 1-for-27 rut on their power play unit that dates back to November 21, a stretch of 12 games. The power play has not been able to convert in consecutive games since the third and fourth game of the season; since then, the unit is 7- for-75 (9.3 pct). In that same timeframe, opponents have been able to score 22 power play goals in 86 opportunities, a success rate of 25.6 pct that, were it held by a single NHL team, would rank fifth in the league.

The Flyers’ penalty kill has improved significantly over the last 11 games, going 27-for-32 (84.3 percent). It had gone 68.5 percent (50 for 73) in the 21 games before that.
