NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers continue to operate as the NHL’s best faceoff team with a 56.8 percent rating. As a team they are more than four points ahead of the rest of the league. The Flyers have four players above 57 percent on the season:

Scott Laughton – 60.7 pct Claude Giroux – 60.5 pct Jordan Weal – 59.7 pct Sean Couturier – 57.9 pct

Among 114 players that have taken 275 or more faceoffs this year, Laughton, Giroux and Weal are the top three. Couturier is tied for seventh.

The Flyers are 0-6-2 in their last eight games. During the stretch, the team has been nearly even with their opponents in shots on goal, 259 to 258, and they have a 434-395 advantage in shot attempts, but they have been outscored 31-15. The Flyers have had 35 or more shots in three of the eight games, including 40 on Tuesday in Washington. The penalty kill is 72.7 (16-for-22) but the Flyers have given up fewer than three power plays per game on average. The power play is 3-for-23 (13.0 pct) but is 3-for 15 in its last four games.

The Flyers’ penalty kill has operated at 82.8 percent over the last 21 games (53 for 64). It comes after the PK went 68.5 percent (50 for 73) on the PK in the first 21 games of the season. The Flyers are 3-for-10 on the power play in their last three games; prior to that game, they had just three power play goals in 44 opportunities in their previous 18 contests.

Carter Hart’s arrival to the NHL has made him the second-youngest goaltender in Flyers history to appear in a game, doing so on Dec. 18 vs. DET at the age of 20 years, 127 days. Only Maxime Ouellet was younger (19 years, 112 days). Hart is the youngest goalie in Flyers history to win a game and was the fifth-youngest in the NHL since 1996-97 to win his debut. He is also the first goalie in NHL history and the first Flyer at any position to wear #79.

Claude Giroux was named to the Metropolitan Division All-Star team last week, earning the sixth All-Star nod of his career. Giroux has 14 goals and 33 assists for 47 points on the season, which leads the team by 12 points. This season he has moved into fourth in franchise history in points (724) and second all-time in assists (496), leaving him four assists shy of becoming just the second player in franchise history to record 500 assists with the team. He is also 10 games away from passing Brian Propp for third all-time in games played. In addition to last year’s game in Tampa Bay, Giroux has represented the Flyers in 2016 (Nashville), 2015 (Columbus), 2012 (Ottawa) and 2011 (Carolina). He becomes the first Flyer to make a sixth All-Star appearance since Eric Lindros (six times) was selected for the Eastern Conference squad in 2000. The Flyers’ franchise record belongs to Bob Clarke, who was named to 10 mid- season NHL All-Star teams and appeared in nine of those games.

Travis Sanheim is averaging 21:34 of ice time per game in the last 12 games dating back to December 18. He has played more than 20 minutes in nine of those 11 games and has established a career high twice – first with 24:14 on Dec. 31 at Carolina, and then with 25:38 last Saturday vs. Calgary. Prior to then, he had only played more than 20 minutes in two of 31 games this season.
