Workshop and tour, examining the conservation, management and development of the Walled City in its contemporary setting. Challenge: How should the next phase of regeneration of the Walled City of Derry be designed? In which ways can it complement and support the regeneration of adjacent residential neighbourhoods and the regeneration of the new cultural quarter, being created in a former military base, across the river? Led by Colm Murray, Architecture Officer, Heritage Council of Ireland and Declan Moore, Archaeologist. 15.00- 15.45 Travel by coach to St Eunan’s Cathedral, Raphoe, County Donegal Workshop Day 2 Theme: “Raphoe - Small Heritage Town Challenges”, workshop and tour examining the conservation, management and development of a small heritage town. Challenge: County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland is just across the border from Derry. As part of the tour/workshop we will look at Raphoe, a small town situated in the agrarian heartland of east Donegal which has a rich built, cultural and ecclesiastical heritage. The potential of Raphoe’s heritage to contribute to its sense of place, its quality of life and the socio- economic development of the town will be considered. Hosted by Very Rev. Dr William Morton, Dean of St Columb’s Cathedral, with some musical entertainment and light refreshments. 7 Saturday 26th October 2013 Symposium Day 3: EWT AGM and Causeway Coast Tour 09.00-10.30 European Walled Towns Annual General Meeting, Bluecoat Room, Verbal Arts Centre, Stable Lane. Chaired by Joseph Spiteri, President, European Walled Towns . Handover of EWT flag from Mayor of Derry to Mayor of Chichester at 10.15am. [Closed meeting for EWT members only] Study tour 10.30-18.30 “The Causeway Coastal Trail”. Travel the Causeway Coast by coach, with stops in Derry, Dunluce, Giant’s Causeway and Carrickfergus Castle. The Causeway is part of the Causeway Coastal Trail, linking the Walled City of Derry in the west with Carrickfergus Castle in the east. Other key heritage sites along the route are Dunluce Castle and the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site Travelling by coach, this study tour will stop at Dunluce, the Causeway and Carrickfergus where facilitators will give short introductions to the opportunities and challenges faced by each site. The overall aim of the study tour will be to examine the relationship between conservation and development on a sub-regional basis.
