signed and on verso titled and dated 1958 on the gallery label 11 x 13 1/2 inches 27.9 x 34.3 centimeters

Provenance: Roberts Gallery, Toronto By descent to the present Private Collection, Ontario Exhibited: Literature: Paul Duval, A.J. Casson, Roberts Gallery, 1975, page 71 The medium of watercolour was very important to A.J. Casson, and he and fellow Group of Seven artist worked to raise its status, which they felt had been neglected. During the April 1930 Group exhibition, Casson and Carmichael exhibited watercolours exclusively, insisting on having a special room set aside for them. Paul Duval states, “By 1930 Casson had become one of the most powerful and expressive watercolour painters Canada has known.” His command of composition and utter assurance with technique had reached a pinnacle. Buck Hill, Bird’s Creek, with its transparent washes of various hues of green depicts a hillside glowing with summer vitality. In the pale blue sky above are cloud formations in Casson’s geometric style, a fine contrast to the verdant treed landscape below. He was also exhibiting internationally: in 1949 at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Museum in Richmond, USA, and in 1950 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. In 1951, the book A.J. Casson by Paul Duval was published. After the mid-1940s, Casson developed a number of styles, ranging from a geometric approach to a more natural style as is exemplified in this fine . Madawaska Valley, on the east side of Algonquin Park in Ontario, was an area of the province where Casson often camped and painted. With its strong sky, clarity of light and balanced composition, Madawaska Valley – Palmer Rapids recalls the strength and beauty of his Group of Seven period work. NOVEMBER 2012 ONLINE SALE CATALOGUE Page: 4 of 85 208 MARC-AURÈLE FORTIN ARCA 1888 - 1970 Canadian Paysage à Sainte-Rose oil on card on board

signed and on verso signed, titled, dated circa 1939 on a gallery label, inscribed "Landscape" and certified by Fortin inventory #H-0192 22 x 28 1/8 inches 55.9 x 71.4 centimeters

Provenance: Galerie Claude Lafitte, Montreal Private Collection, Montreal Exhibited: Literature: This vivid landscape by Marc-Aurèle Fortin depicts the village of Sainte-Rose where he was born and lived much of his life; now a neighbourhood within the City of Laval, it was amalgamated along with numerous other smaller towns in 1965. Fortin was a daring experimenter in his work. He used intense, arresting colours against black and grey backgrounds, employing bold contrasts and white highlights. His work can be described as a decorative type of Fauvism, wherein brilliant colours are used within the parameters of carefully thought out compositions with lyrical lines and accenting patterns. In this work, the fence line repeats the accenting strokes of white in the sky, and Fortin’s brushwork has areas of consistent patterning that unify the work overall. His delicate treatment of the lines of the tree limbs and their endmost branches exemplify Fortin’s skill with the large, lush trees which he often sought out to paint. The delicate raw umber leaves, which drip down from the uppermost edges of the work, are especially fine. Starting Bid: $25,000 CDN Estimate: $30,000 ~ $40,000 CDN Preview at: Heffel Fine Art Auction House Vancouver

NOVEMBER 2012 ONLINE SALE CATALOGUE Page: 5 of 85 209 ALEXANDER YOUNG (A.Y.) JACKSON ALC CGP G7 OSA RCA RSA 1882 - 1974 Canadian Coldwell, Lake Superior oil on panel

signed and on verso signed, titled and inscribed "Studio Building Severn St., Toronto" 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches 21.6 x 26.7 centimeters

Provenance: Dominion Gallery, Montreal Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc., Montreal By descent to the present Private Collection, Calgary Exhibited: Literature: Wayne Larsen, A.Y. Jackson, The Life of a Landscape Painter, 2009, page 116 A.Y. Jackson’s first sketching trip to Lake Superior was in autumn of 1921, when he and fellow Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris continued on there after a trip to Algoma. In autumn of 1922, Jackson again accompanied Harris to Lake Superior. One of their sketching places on this trip was the village of Coldwell on the North Shore of Lake Superior, as seen in this atmospheric sketch. They camped, enduring rain, cold, wind that threatened to tear their tent away and animals that tried to steal their food. Despite these challenges, both artists did fine work. Jackson for his part was struck with admiration for this stunning landscape. He stated, “I know of no more impressive scenery in Canada for the landscape painter. There is a sublime order to it, the long curves of the beaches, the sweeping ranges of hills, and headlands that push out into the lake.” Harris was attracted to the open sweep of the lake, but Jackson was drawn to the rugged and rhythmic hills surrounding it. Jackson and Harris returned to Lake Superior again in October of 1924 and autumn of 1925. On the 1925 trip, Harris, Jackson and A.J. Casson took the train to Port Coldwell – however, the train would not stop there due to the steep grade. This did not deter the intrepid painters - Harris negotiated with the conductor, the train slowed down, their baggage was tossed onto soft gravel and the artists jumped out after it. They then loaded their equipment onto a jigger for the next four miles to their campsite. Jackson had an ongoing relationship with Lake Superior, and in 1955 he bought property there at Twidale Bay near Wawa. This is a splendid example of Jackson’s work at Lake Superior. The work is fluid and lushly painterly, with brush-strokes loaded with mauve, pink and beige that are offset by touches of orange, blue and red. Jackson's characteristic sense of rhythm is seen in the curve of the bay and the rounded hills. The town, set into the protected bay, has a warm and intimate feeling, contrasted by the expansive view out into the vast lake. Starting Bid: $20,000 CDN Estimate: $25,000 ~ $35,000 CDN Preview at: Heffel Fine Art Auction House Vancouver

NOVEMBER 2012 ONLINE SALE CATALOGUE Page: 6 of 85 210 ALEXANDER YOUNG (A.Y.) JACKSON ALC CGP G7 OSA RCA RSA 1882 - 1974 Canadian Muskeg, Lockhart River oil on panel

signed and on verso signed, titled, dated Sept 3rd, 1957 and inscribed "H.G Barlu sur matt", "or MHH", "First Geddes Webster" and "Sally + Peter Douglas, R.E. Dowsett" 10 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches 26.7 x 34.3 centimeters

Provenance: Private Collection, Toronto Exhibited: Literature: Wayne Larsen, A.Y. Jackson: The Life of a Landscape Painter, 2009, page 147 A.Y. Jackson visited Yellowknife on Great Slave Lake as early as 1928, traveling with MacIntosh Bell as well as scientist and artist Dr. Frederick Banting. Wayne Larsen related that “out of all the towns that Jackson had visited over the years, he was especially impressed with Yellowknife, a remote northern outpost populated by an array of colourful characters that included prospectors, trappers, Native families, and mining company officials.” Jackson was pleased by the warm welcome given to him by this pioneer community. At the end of August in 1957, Jackson, along with artist Maurice Haycock, returned to Yellowknife, then traveled out into the Barren Lands, camping and sketching. Lockhart River is located east of Yellowknife, and is typical of Jackson’s work there in its sense of rhythm and its depiction of distinctive elements of this landscape such as the rocky ground and writhing, stunted trees. A deep blue sky and bright greens in the ground cover reflect the purity of the atmosphere of this wild and open land. 211 ALEXANDER YOUNG (A.Y.) JACKSON ALC CGP G7 OSA RCA RSA 1882 - 1974 Canadian St-Tite-des-Caps oil on panel

signed and on verso titled 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches 21.6 x 26.7 centimeters

Provenance: Dominion Gallery, Montreal Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc., Montreal By descent to the present Private Collection, Calgary Exhibited: Literature: A.Y. Jackson, A Painter’s Country, The Autobiography of A.Y. Jackson, 1958, page 63 A.Y. Jackson painted the picturesque village of St-Tite-des-Caps numerous times from 1930 until his last trip in 1946, finding rich visual imagery in its ramshackle barns, houses and meandering snake fences. Jackson sometimes traveled there with artist companions such as Dr. Frederick Banting and Randolph Hewton, and wrote, “One of the places we loved to paint was St-Tite-des-Caps on Cap Tourmente, a high plateau, forty miles below Quebec. It was not one of the old villages, but it lay in a hollow encircled by hills, and we could look down on it from several directions.” The 1941 National Film Board documentary film on Jackson titled Canadian Landscape included scenes of Jackson painting there en plein air. Jackson became part of village life when he stayed there, based at the Hotel Tremblay, where he enjoyed the owners’ warm hospitality. Oil sketches such as St-Tite-des-Caps provide a precious memory of Quebec rural life before the encroachment of modernization. This splendid sketch has all the elements of a classic Jackson Quebec village winter scene. The town is displayed in layers on the side of the hill, culminating in the church with its striking spire at the top. The layers of snow are tinged with pastel colours, and the buildings are painted different hues, an expression of their individuality. In the foreground is one of Jackson’s sought-after iconic images, villagers traveling by horse-drawn sleigh. signed and on verso signed, titled and inscribed "$125." 12 x 16 inches 30.5 x 40.6 centimeters

Provenance: Private Collection, King City, Ontario Private Collection, Vancouver Exhibited: Literature: As a member of the Group of Seven, Frank Johnston shared their early painting trips and their spirit of experimentation. Known for his charming and genial personality, he was also a fierce individualist and, after his departure from the Group in 1924, his style evolved in a more realistic direction. Johnston’s are marked by a clarity of light; he was a master of the sunny winter day and the depiction of light on snow contrasted with luminous shade. Johnston’s winter imagery ranged from the central Ontario countryside to northern Ontario and Quebec and, in the late 1930s, as far north as the Northwest Territories. In the tradition of the Group, Johnston painted outdoors as well as in the studio, sometimes working in conditions cold enough to congeal his oil paint. The Golden Pool is a fine example of Johnston’s sense of winter beauty, with its blue-shadowed snowbanks, heavily laden branches and the striking focal point of the dark pool lit by golden reflected light. 216a WILLIAM KURELEK ARCA OC OSA 1927 - 1977 Canadian Next Shelter Two Miles oil on board

initialed and dated 1973 6 x 7 inches 15.2 x 17.8 centimeters

Provenance: Private Collection, Toronto Exhibited: Literature: William Kurelek grew up on the Prairies in a hard-working Ukrainian farming family, first living in Alberta in the town of Whitford, and later in Manitoba north of Winnipeg. Winter on the Prairies, while it brought hardship through the harsh weather - farm chores had to be done, even if there was a blizzard - was also a source of joyful play for Kurelek and his siblings and friends. Skiing, tunnelling into snow drifts, games such as “King of the Mountain”, homemade skating rinks, hockey, snow forts and snowball fights were all an everyday part of winter in the country. Kurelek’s fascinating paintings depicting his memories of such activities were included in his book A Prairie Boy’s Winter. In Next Shelter Two Miles, the figures pause at the edge of the open expanse of the snowy field, jaunty in their colourful clothing, but conscious of the distance to refuge. It is an image that shows tenderness in the innocence of the young people but also awareness of the realities of winter. Prairie scenes involving Kurelek’s memories of childhood, seen through his penetrating eye and suffused with nostalgia, are considered to be particularly desireable. NOVEMBER 2012 ONLINE SALE CATALOGUE Page: 11 of 85 223 WALTER JOSEPH (W.J.) PHILLIPS ASA CPE CSPWC RCA 1884 - 1963 Canadian Peggy's Cove watercolour on paper

signed and dated 1956 and on verso titled on the gallery label 14 x 21 inches 35.6 x 53.3 centimeters

Provenance: Canadian Art Galleries, Calgary Private Collection, British Columbia Exhibited: Literature: Originally from England, Walter J. Phillips was steeped in the great tradition of British watercolourists such as David Cox and John Sell Cotman. Before immigrating to Canada in 1912, he undertook sketching trips throughout England and held two exhibitions of his watercolours in Salisbury. Once in Canada, Phillips settled in Winnipeg, and set to painting the surrounding landscape. In his unpublished manuscript Wet Paint, Phillips describes Canadian atmosphere as clear and dry, and his watercolours changed in response to it. Phillips was a champion of beauty in nature, and his body of work in watercolour is renowned for its allure of image and for its technical accomplishment. Phillips refined use of transparent washes, which defined form and atmospheric effects, captured the clarity of light that is so distinctive in Canadian landscape. This fine large format watercolour depicts the iconic lighthouse at Peggy’s Point in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia. Built in 1914, it sits atop a rugged granite outcrop, and has endured the powerful crash of Atlantic surf during many winter storms. Phillips’s masterful hand with watercolour is in full evidence here, from the deft handling of texture and patterning in the rocks to delicate washes defining sand and sky. His eye for the dynamics of composition manifests in his highlighting of the lighthouse against a pale sky, and the strength of the granite outcropping on which it stands. Phillips lived in both Winnipeg and Banff, and painted primarily the Prairies, Lake of the Woods, the Rockies and the West Coast. Peggy’s Cove is a rare and splendid depiction of the east coast. United by their passion for art, they kept life-long connections, often exhibiting together. They had strong supporters, such as Eric Brown at the National Gallery of Canada, thus Savage’s work was regularly included in exhibitions there. Savage was a respected art educator and a pillar of the art community – a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters, she was elected its Montreal president in 1949. Her work embodied the spirit of modernism, and was known for its strength and clarity. In her praise, Barbara Meadowcroft wrote, “Anne Savage believed in art as the expression of what was highest in the human spirit. Whether she was painting or awakening others to the beauty around them, she worked with self-abandonment, intensity and joy.” In this fine rural scene, Savage expresses the robust energy of the sun-washed land, pressed at its borders by dense forest. Orange and red highlights from earth to sky add to the drama and vigour of the scene. Starting Bid: $8,000 CDN Estimate: $12,000 ~ $16,000 CDN Preview at: Heffel Gallery Montreal

Provenance: Bau-Xi Gallery, Vancouver By descent to the present Private Collection, Vancouver Exhibited: Literature: Forest Night is a continuation of Gordon Smith’s late 1980s cycle of deep-hued abstracted forest paintings that resulted from his trips into the British Columbia wilderness to such locations as the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1987 and Carmanah Valley on Vancouver Island in 1989. Just outside his studio on the North Shore, the forest is also close at hand, and Douglas fir, hemlock and cedar form a dense screen and a constant source of imagery. Smith’s abstraction comes directly from the natural world, as seen in this abstracted wall of forest. Vertical strips of cedar attached to the surface are physical evidence of the nearby forest and suggest trunk edges, but also function to return the eye to the canvas surface. Forest Night’s dark and mysterious depths are illuminated by splashes and streaks of brilliant green, turquoise and blue, as well as warm-spectrum colours of red and orange. Streaks of more fluid paint add to the verticality of the work and the painterliness of its surface. With its expressionist brush- strokes, rich palette and strong presence, Forest Night is an outstanding work by this modernist West Coast master. Starting Bid: $20,000 CDN Estimate: $20,000 ~ $25,000 CDN Preview at: Heffel Fine Art Auction House Vancouver

This important work was first exhibited in 1924 at the Royal Canadian Academy, and subsequently at many exhibitions in Canada and abroad. So great was the regard for this work that Pierre L’Allier stated that “Even if Suzor-Coté had only created this one work, his name would deserve to be featured in any history of Canadian sculpture.” Suzor-Coté’s subjects were the pioneers of Quebec, both men and women, and he used models for them from Montreal and from First Nations people at the Mohawk reserve at Caughnawaga. In this extraordinary bronze, he captures the volume and solidity of the women on the way to market with their baskets, as well as the sense of motion in their swaying robes and the energy in their determined stride. The Musée du Québec, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the National Gallery of Canada each have a cast of this fine sculpture in their collections. Please note: this work is inscribed with the foundry stamp of Roman Bronze Works, N.Y. Starting Bid: $14,000 CDN Estimate: $15,000 ~ $20,000 CDN Preview at: Heffel Gallery Montreal

NOVEMBER 2012 ONLINE SALE CATALOGUE Page: 47 of 85 439 JEAN-PAUL ARMAND MOUSSEAU AANFM AUTO CAS QMG 1927 - 1991 Canadian Ceiling Light Fixture fibreglass and coloured resin light fixture

signed and dated 1960 twice 10 x 36 x 31 inches 25.4 x 91.4 x 78.7 centimeters

Provenance: Acquired directly from the Artist by the present Private Collection, Montreal Exhibited: Literature: In the fall of 1945, Jean-Paul Mousseau began to study interior design at the École du meuble in Montreal. He formed significant relationships there, becoming acquainted with Marcel Barbeau and Jean- Paul Riopelle, and would later join the radical Automatists. His work during those earlier years was influenced by the unrestrained technique of Paul-Émile Borduas; however, during the 1950s he increasingly began to work with different materials. By 1957, he was creating sculptures and illuminated objects with fibreglass and coloured resins. This striking ceiling light fixture was executed in 1960, and is an important example of his vision to integrate art into the interior environment. In the years to follow, this vision and acute skill in the mediums of fibreglass and ceramics led him to various public art projects in Montreal, most famously for the Montreal Métro and Hydro-Québec. Mousseau played an important role in generating the communal visual culture of Montreal, and this light fixture is a stunning example of his highly celebrated luminous objects. His soulful and painterly self-portraits, portraits and nudes were noted for their self-awareness and poetic introspection, such as in this sensitive work. Alfred Pinsky writes that “the sensuous awareness with which Roberts endows his figure paintings show[s] his respect for man’s integrity and his affirmation of humanity’s simple beauty.” Roberts preserved a certain formal distance with his nude models, and consequently they are classical in their reserve and poise. Stripped down to the essentials of figure, drapery and abstract background, in Seated Nude the quality of the medium itself, in this case an extraordinarily soft and atmospheric pastel, is as important as the figure contemplated. The years after World War II were very productive for the artist, and Pinsky asserts, “Roberts returned to work with a surety, skill and fervour which produced some of the best paintings of his career.” Roberts was also involved with the group Prisme d’yeux that formed in Montreal in 1948, although his path as an artist was singular, and his nature that of the poet, apart from the mundane world.
