CASSON CGP CSPWC G7 POSA PRCA 1898 - 1992 Canadian Buck Hill, Bird's Creek watercolour and graphite on paper signed and on verso titled and dated 1958 on the gallery label 11 x 13 1/2 inches 27.9 x 34.3 centimeters Provenance: Roberts Gallery, Toronto By descent to the present Private Collection, Ontario Exhibited: Literature: Paul Duval, A.J. Casson, Roberts Gallery, 1975, page 71 The medium of watercolour was very important to A.J. Casson, and he and fellow Group of Seven artist Franklin Carmichael worked to raise its status, which they felt had been neglected. During the April 1930 Group exhibition, Casson and Carmichael exhibited watercolours exclusively, insisting on having a special room set aside for them. Paul Duval states, “By 1930 Casson had become one of the most powerful and expressive watercolour painters Canada has known.” His command of composition and utter assurance with technique had reached a pinnacle. Buck Hill, Bird’s Creek, with its transparent washes of various hues of green depicts a hillside glowing with summer vitality. In the pale blue sky above are cloud formations in Casson’s geometric style, a fine contrast to the verdant treed landscape below. Casson. In 1949 he was elected President of the Royal Canadian Academy, and during the 1940s and 1950s served on the executive committees of the Ontario College of Art and The Art Gallery of Toronto. He was also exhibiting internationally: in 1949 at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Museum in Richmond, USA, and in 1950 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. In 1951, the book A.J. Casson by Paul Duval was published. After the mid-1940s, Casson developed a number of styles, ranging from a geometric approach to a more natural style as is exemplified in this fine painting. Madawaska Valley, on the east side of Algonquin Park in Ontario, was an area of the province where Casson often camped and painted. With its strong sky, clarity of light and balanced composition, Madawaska Valley – Palmer Rapids recalls the strength and beauty of his Group of Seven period work. Fortin was a daring experimenter in his work. He used intense, arresting colours against black and grey backgrounds, employing bold contrasts and white highlights. His work can be described as a decorative type of Fauvism, wherein brilliant colours are used within the parameters of carefully thought out compositions with lyrical lines and accenting patterns. In this work, the fence line repeats the accenting strokes of white in the sky, and Fortin’s brushwork has areas of consistent patterning that unify the work overall. His delicate treatment of the lines of the tree limbs and their endmost branches exemplify Fortin’s skill with the large, lush trees which he often sought out to paint. The delicate raw umber leaves, which drip down from the uppermost edges of the work, are especially fine. One of their sketching places on this trip was the village of Coldwell on the North Shore of Lake Superior, as seen in this atmospheric sketch.

Friday Session 1 : Room uaac-aauc1 : KC 103 2017 Conference of the Universities Art Association of Canada Congrès 2017 de l’Association d’art des universités du Canada October 12–15 octobre, 2017 Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity uaac-aauc.com UAAC - AAUC Conference 2017 October 12-15, 2017 Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity 1 Welcome to the conference The experience of conference-going is one of being in the moment: for a few days, we forget the quotidian pressures that crowd our lives, giving ourselves over to the thrill of being with people who share our passions and vocations. And having Banff as the setting just heightens the delight: in the most astonishingly picturesque way possible, it makes the separation from everyday life both figurative and literal. Incredibly, the members of the Universities Art Association of Canada have been getting together like this for five decades—2017 is the fifteenth anniversary of the first UAAC conference, held at Queen’s University and organized around the theme of “The Arts and the University.” So it’s fitting that we should reflect on what’s happened in that time: to the arts, to universities, to our geographical, political and cultural contexts. Certainly David Garneau’s keynote presentation, “Indian Agents: Indigenous Artists as Non-State Actors,” will provide a crucial opportunity for that, but there will be other occasions as well and I hope you will find the experience productive and invigorating. I want to thank the organizers for their hard work in bringing this conference together. Thanks also to the programming committee for their great work with the difficult task of reviewing session proposals.

TEN CANADIAN ART ESCAPES Even if you’re not leaving home this weekend, you can take a trip to these destinations presented by some of our most celebrated artists From everyone at the Art Canada Institute, we wish you a happy and safe Victoria Day long weekend. One of the reasons everyone at ACI entered into the field of educating through art is its power to transport us. So while we’re staying put and social distancing, over the next few days, we’ll also be taking tours around the country through art, led by many of Canada’s finest artists. Here is where we’ll be going. We hope you’ll come with us and enjoy the destinations. Sara Angel Founder and Executive Director, Art Canada Institute Visit CHARLEVOIX with Jean Paul Lemieux Jean Paul Lemieux, Those Beautiful Days (Les beaux jours), 1937 Text from Jean Paul Lemieux: Life & Work by Michèle Grandbois Jean Paul Lemieux painted this work at Port-au-Persil, in the Charlevoix region of Quebec, where he and his young wife, Madeleine, spent the summer of 1937. The newly married couple rented a room under the eaves in a rustic canadienne house in this tiny hamlet nestled in a cove, where the expanse of the St. Lawrence widens spectacularly to more than twenty kilometres across. Lemieux effectively captures the sensation of vertigo one feels looking out over the blue immensity from the peaks of the region’s headlands. Born in Wingham Ontario to a Scottish farm family, he studied architecture and bookkeeping at his father’s insistence. In 1878 he moved to Toronto to study art. He was able to extend his art education under Thomas Eakins in Philadelphia, where he met the painter Mary Hiester. In 1888 the couple travelled to Europe and studied at the Julian and Colorossi Academies, returning to Toronto in 1889. The house he designed and built in Wychwood Park was his home until the end of his life. In 1890, George Reid began teaching at the Central Ontario School of Art and Design. He eventually became principal and researched new theories of art education in the United States and Europe. Under his direction, the art school became independent of the Board of Education and moved into its own building, which he designed, in 1921.

  • The White Settler Colonial Landscape of Toronto's
THE WHITE SETTLER COLONIAL LANDSCAPE OF TORONTO’S WYCHWOOD PARK by Emily R.M. Lind A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in CULTURAL MEDIATIONS Carleton University Ottawa Ontario © 2020 Emily R.M. Lind Abstract Mythologized as a former artist’s colony, Wychwood Park is a gated community in midtown Toronto that encompasses fifty-eight homes built at the turn of the twentieth century. Wychwood Park’s landscape plan is one of Canada’s earliest examples of a garden suburb – a suburban design model derived from the turn-of-the-twentieth-century English Garden City movement. The Park boasts the highest concentration of Arts and Crafts domestic architecture in Toronto. Famous early residents included artists and art patrons who were instrumental in establishing what became the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario College of Art and Design, and the Ontario Society of Artists. In this dissertation, I argue that Wychwood Park is a white settler colonial landscape. This argument is informed by the idea of landscape as an actor in social and political processes, rather than a reflection of them. The physical landscape of Wychwood Park, and the extent to which it reflects the ideas and values that sustain settler colonial rule, are seriously interrogated in this project. I am interested in the ways that a neighbourhood like Wychwood Park can teach Torontonians something about how patriarchy and racism work and what it means to live in an environment shaped by gendered/racialized thinking and social organization.
