Hereward 'the Wake' and the Barony of Bourne: a Reassessment of a Fenland Legend [1] Hereward, generally known as 'the Wake', is second only to Robin Hood in the pantheon of English heroes. From at least the early twelfth century his deeds were celebrated in Anglo-Norman aristocratic circles, and he was no doubt the subject of many a popular tale and song from an early period. [2] But throughout the Middle Ages Hereward's fame was local, being confined to the East Midlands and East Anglia. [3] It was only in the nineteenth century that the rebel became a truly national icon with the publication of Charles Kingsley novel Hereward the Wake .[4] The transformation was particularly Victorian: Hereward is portrayed as a prototype John Bull, a champion of the English nation. The assessment of historians has generally been more sober. Racial overtones have persisted in many accounts, but it has been tacitly accepted that Hereward expressed the fears and frustrations of a landed community under threat. Paradoxically, however, in the light of the nature of that community, the high social standing that the tradition has accorded him has been denied. [5] The earliest recorded notice of Hereward is the almost contemporary annal for 1071 in the D version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. A Northern recension probably produced at York,[6] its account of the events in the fenland are terse. It records the plunder of Peterborough in 1070 'by the men that Bishop Æthelric [late of Durham] had excommunicated because they had taken there all that he had', and the rebellion of Earls Edwin and Morcar in the following year. -

Chapter 5 Castor Village – Overview 1066 to 2000 Introduction One of the earliest recorded descriptions of Castor as a village is by a travelling historian, William Camden who, in 1612, wrote: ‘The Avon or Nen river, running under a beautiful bridge at Walmesford (Wansford), passes by Durobrivae, a very ancient city, called in Saxon Dormancaster, took up a great deal of ground on each side of the river in both counties. For the little village of Castor which stands one mile from the river, seems to have been part of it, by the inlaid chequered pavements found there. And doubtless it was a place of more than ordinary note; in the adjoining fields (which instead of Dormanton they call Normangate) such quantities of Roman coins are thrown up you would think they had been sewn. Ermine Street, known as the forty foot way or The Way of St Kyneburgha, now known as Lady Connyburrow’s Way must have been up towards Water Newton, if one may judge from, it seems to have been paved with a sort of cubical bricks and tiles.’ [1] By Camden’s time, Castor was a village made up of a collection of tenant farms and cottages, remaining much the same until the time of the Second World War. The village had developed out of the late Saxon village of the time of the Domesday Book, that village having itself grown up among the ruins of the extensive Roman villa and estate that preceded it. The pre-conquest (1066) settlement of Castor is described in earlier chapters. -

Chapter 7 Constructing Early Anglo-Saxon Identity in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles Courtnay Konshuh The chronicle compiled at King Alfred’s court after 891 was part of his educa- tional reform and was also part of an attempt to create a common national identity for the English. This can be seen in the contemporary annals (i.e. from 871 to 891), but the large body of annals drawn together from diverse sources for the preceding nine centuries shows this same focus. The earlier annals, while not necessarily compiled at the same time, were selected and manipu- lated with the same goals, and are organised thematically into annals which explore Britannia’s roots as a Roman colony, its development as a Christian nation, and the adventus of the Germanic tribes. Barbara Yorke has shown some of these accounts to be semi-historical or mythological, but they are jux- taposed with historically accurate descriptions. While the early annals have a different compilation context than those which document Alfred’s reign, they were nonetheless selected, organised and inflated in order to legitimise the line of Cerdic and bestow authority on Alfred as well as his descendants. In this, they follow the same model as later annals in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles.1 In light of recent research, it seems well established that the compilation of the “Common Stock” or “Alfredian Chronicle” (i.e. the annals to 891 common to most Anglo-Saxon Chronicles) was a courtly endeavour and that the exemplar for the earliest A-manuscript was a product of King Alfred’s scholarly circle.2 While Alfred’s personal involvement in this may not have been particularly large,3 the political thought of his circle of scholars can be detected throughout the annals. -

Chapter 15 Places I’ll Remember? Reflections on Alfred, Asser and the Power of Memory in the West Saxon Landscape Ryan Lavelle We are shaped by our memories and by others’ memories of us. That statement may be a truism, but there are few places better than a Festschrift where one can get away with starting a paper in such a manner. And it is a valuable truism. Those memories which shape us, as so many studies have shown, are shaped by place, and the places themselves are shaped by memory. This has been dem- onstrated in neuroscientific terms over the last four decades by the identifica- tion of the role of ‘place cells’ within the hippocampus of the brain linked to the subjective ‘sense of place’, in part linked to the creation of personal memo- ry, while the significance of Lieux de mémoire in French historiography pro- vides an endorsement of what many of us already feel.1 The development of the spatial turn has proved a particularly rich field in the study of Anglo-Saxon history and culture: Nicholas Howe showed the ways in which the experiences of place—those of the modern scholar and the medieval sense of place—can collide in a visit to a location, often in a way that forces us to consider how we approach the past.2 A range of work on Anglo-Saxon landscapes, addressing the context of place-names, settlement, and perception has proved particu- larly fruitful in the last decade or so.3 1 A seminal work in the field of neuroscience is John O’Keefe, “Place Units in the Hippocampus of the Freely Moving Rat,” Experimental Neurology 51 (1976), 78–109; a recent study is Sheri J.Y. -

Until King Alfred the Great established England various Kings ruled separate parts. In most cases the initial ruler came from the mainland. That time of the history is shrouded in myths, which turn into legends and subsequent into history. Alfred the Great (849-901) was a very learned man and studied all available past history and especially biblical information. He came up with the concept that he was the 72nd generation descendant of Adam and Eve. Moreover he was a 17th generation descendant of Woden (Odin). Proponents of one theory claim that he was the descendant of Noah’s son Sem (Shem) because he claimed to descend from Sceaf, a marooned man who came to Britain on a boat after a flood. See the Biblical Ancestry and Early Mythology Ancestry books). The book British Mythical Royal Ancestry from King Brutus shows the mythical kings including Shakespeare’s King Lair. The lineages are from a common ancestor, Priam King of Troy. His one daughter Troana leads to us via Sceaf, the descendants from his other daughter Creusa lead to the British linage. No attempt has been made to connect these rulers with the historical ones. Before Alfred the Great formed a unified England several Royal Houses ruled the various parts. Not all of them have any clear lineages to the present times, i.e. our ancestors, but some do. I have collected information which show these. These include British Royal Ancestry Book 1, Legendary Kings from Brutus of Troy to including King Leir. -

In England by the early 630s bishoprics had been established in Canterbury, Rochester, London Dunwich, York and Lindisfarne, but this left the Anglo-Saxon areas southwest of these dioceses in pagan hands. So, in about AD 634, Pope Honorius sent the Italian monk Birinus to extend the Church in Britain. As was often done in those times, when the duties of a bishop were clearly seen to include evangelism, Birinus was consecrated before he set out. Bede writes that he had promised that he would sow the seed of our holy faith in the most inland and remote regions of the English where no other teacher had been before him…but when he had reached Britain…he found them completely heathen, and decided it would be better to begin to preach the word of God among them rather than seek more distant converts. He landed at the port of Hamwic (now part of Southampton), where he founded the first of a number of churches, and from there travelled round the area ruled by King Cynegils, with a royal site at the former Roman settlement of Dorchester-on-Thames. At this time the Christian Oswald (5th August) had recently become king in Northumbria, and Cynegils was seeking an alliance with him against the pagan kingdom of Mercia. In AD 639 Oswald was in Dorchester, and acted as godfather to Cynegils when Birinus baptized him and his family. The two kings then gave Birinus the town of Dorchester as the centre of a diocese for the area which would become the kingdom of Wessex. -

Susan Carter John of Salisbury was one of the best educated men in the mid-twelfth century. The beneficiary of twelve years of study in Paris under the tutelage of Peter Abelard and other scholars, John flourished alongside Thomas Becket in the Canterbury curia of Archbishop Theobald. There, his skills as a writer were of great value. Having lived through the Anarchy of King Stephen, he was a fierce advocate for the liberty of the English Church. Not surprisingly, John became caught up in the controversy between King Henry II and Thomas Becket, Henry’s former chancellor and successor to Theobald as archbishop of Canterbury. Prior to their shared time in exile, from 1164-1170, John had written three treatises with concern for royal court follies, royal pressures on the Church, and the danger of tyrants at the core of the Entheticus de dogmate philosophorum , the Metalogicon , and the Policraticus. John dedicated these works to Becket. The question emerges: how effective was John through dedicated treatises and his letters to Becket in guiding Becket’s attitudes and behavior regarding Church liberty? By means of contemporary communication theory an examination of John’s writings and letters directed to Becket creates a new vista on the relationship between John and Becket—and the impact of John on this martyred archbishop. -

Penda of Mercia Penda (died 15 November 655)[1] was a 7th-century 2 Descent, beginning of reign, and King of Mercia, the Anglo-Saxon kingdom in what is battle with the West Saxons today the English Midlands.A pagan at a time when Christianity was taking hold in many of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Penda took over the Severn Valley in 628 fol- Penda was a son of Pybba of Mercia and said to be lowing the Battle of Cirencester before participating in an Icling, with a lineage purportedly extending back to the defeat of the powerful Northumbrian king Edwin at Wōden. 1 An Early Mercian Hegemony: Penda and Overkingship in the Seventh Century The overthrow of Penda meant the end of militant heathenism and the development of civilization in England (Sir Frank Stenton, Anglo-Saxon England (Oxford, 1943), xvi) The words cited above refer to the death in 655 of Penda, the last king of the Mercians to die a non-Christian. Today Stenton’s judgement of Penda seems both anachronistic and loaded with questionable value judgements. Few if any contemporary scholars would consciously endorse the agenda implicit in his words, yet arguably a modified form of Stenton’s vision of Penda still underpins much of the literature on Mercian hegemony, and indeed on overkingship in general. Overkingship is an aspect of early Anglo-Saxon society which has traditionally attracted much scholarly attention. The mechanisms of these systems - how they were built up, the methods used to maintain them, the reasons for their collapse - have frequently been discussed. 1 One reason for this interest is that English historians historically have been preoccupied with the creation in the tenth century of a single English kingdom, and have looked for its antecedents in the overkingships of the seventh, eighth and ninth centuries. Despite this extensive consideration, Penda has received comparatively little attention. Even scholars writing about Mercian dominance have had little to say about him. Typically, his career is given cursory attention, and writers quickly move on to later, Christian Mercian rulers. While his power is generally acknowledged, he is not treated as an overking of the same order as the Northumbrians Edwin, Oswald and Oswiu.2 Overall, the impression one gets is that Penda’s career was somehow less significant 2 than those of later kings, and that the important aspects of Mercian history begin with his sons Wulfhere and Æthelred. -

Chapter 4 The Anglian Period: The Royal Ladies of Castor [1] St. Kyneburgha of Castor: from Mercian princess to Northumbrian queen Castor Parish Church stands upon an escarpment, which has been occupied from at least the Roman period. It bears a unique dedication to the seventh-century saint, Kyneburgha or Cyneburh, a Mercian princess and erstwhile queen of Northumbria who, according to local tradition, retired from court in order to establish a nunnery on the site of an abandoned early fourth-century villa. Reliable, near-contemporary information relating to Kyneburgha is limited to a single reference in Venerable Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica (c. 731), in which she was described as the sister of Peada, King of the Middle Angles, and the wife of Alhfrith, a Christian prince of Northumbria [2]. From this statement we may deduce that she was also the daughter of the unrepentant heathen king, Penda of Mercia (c. 626-c. 655), and his consort, Cynewise, whose stronghold was in the Tamworth area of the Trent Valley [3]. All subsequent references to Kyneburgha are either of post-Conquest date or survive only in the form of twelfth-century copies and, consequently, are much less trustworthy [4]. Nor are there any archaeological finds to substantiate Kyneburgha’s relationship with the Castor site. However, by examining all of the available sources, in conjunction with place-name and sculptural evidence, it may be possible to gain an insight into the life and times of this remarkable lady. Kyneburgha was born during an era when England was ruled by a few aristocratic families, both Christian and pagan, who intermarried in attempts to form alliances and to found dynasties in rival provinces.
