KAYAN LAND TENURE AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF DEVOLVABLE USUFRUCT IN BORNEO G. N. Appell Brandeis University INTRODUCTION The literature on land tenure among the indigenous peoples of Borneo perpetuates an error with regard to the Kayan system of land tenure. It is stated that among the Kayan no devolvable usufructary rights are created by the clearing of primary forest (e.g. Rousseau 1977:136) and that the Kayan land tenure system is, therefore, like that of the Rungus of Sabah. However, according to my field inquiries the Kayan and Rungus have radically different systems of land tenure. In correcting this misapprehension it will be necessary to review the status of research on land tenure in Borneo and pose critical questions for further research.1 THE TYPES OF LAND TENURE SYSTEMS IN THE SWIDDEN SOCIETIES OF BORNEO There are two basic types of land tenure systems found in those societies practicing swidden agriculture (see Appell 1971a). First, there is what I term "the circulating usufruct system"; and second, there is what I call "the devolvable usufruct system" (See Appell 1971b).2 In the system of circulating usufruct, once a swidden area has reverted to forest, any member of the village may cut the forest again to make a swidden without seeking permission of the previous cultivator. In other words, no devolvable or permanent use rights are established by cutting primary forest. Examples of this type of system may be found among the Rungus (See Appell 1971b, 1976) and the Bulusu' (see Appell 1983a, n.d.). -

Cross-Gender Attempts by Indonesian Female Impersonator Dancer Didik Nini Thowok Madoka Fukuoka Graduate School of Human Sciences, Osaka University, Japan [email protected] ABSTRACT This article examines the creative stages of Didik Nini Thowok (1954‒), a female impersonator and cross-gender dancer based in Java, Indonesia. In addition, it discusses his endeavours of crossing gender boundaries by focusing on his use of costumes and masks, and analysing two significant works: Dwimuka Jepindo as an example of comedic cross-gender expression and Dewi Sarak Jodag as an example of serious cross-gender expression. The findings indicate three overall approaches to crossing gender boundaries: (1) surpassing femininity naturally expressed by female dancers; (2) mastering and presenting female characters by female impersonators and cross-gender dancers; and (3) breaking down the framework of gender itself. Through his artistic activity and unique approach, Didik has continued to express various types of femininity to deviate from stereotypical gender imagery. -

This research has signification wit tradition, especially in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia. Folkore is a tradition, but in the line with the development of media. Folklore spread in the wider area outside its tradition.This study used a qualitative approach. Data is the form of art traditions in Java, especially around Surakarta. Which is the source of data are the kinds of traditions such as puppets, drama, songs, and so on. The data source is also in the form of electronic display on the TV, radio, movies, and CDs. Another source is the tradition of the artists themselves. Sampling determined by purposive sampling. Art tradition is part of folklore. Today, art tradition became popular culture and loss its tradition value. Art tradition has changed and reflected the change of the era. The change is a form of the changing identities and mass communication. It mean that the culture is instable and not in the closed system. The culture is in forming, dynamic, and continuously updating their self. So, the culture is not artifacts or symbol, but a process. This research tries to study the transformation of culture from folklore or art tradition to the popular culture. Art tradition grows in the certain society. But, today, it is transformed to TV’s performance. -

Cross-Lingual Machine Speech Chain for Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, and Bataks Speech Recognition and Synthesis Sashi Novitasari1, Andros Tjandra1, Sakriani Sakti1;2, Satoshi Nakamura1;2 1Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan 2RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project AIP, Japan fsashi.novitasari.si3, tjandra.ai6, ssakti,[email protected] Abstract Even though over seven hundred ethnic languages are spoken in Indonesia, the available technology remains limited that could support communication within indigenous communities as well as with people outside the villages. As a result, indigenous communities still face isolation due to cultural barriers; languages continue to disappear. To accelerate communication, speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) technology is one approach that can overcome language barriers. However, S2ST systems require machine translation (MT), speech recognition (ASR), and synthesis (TTS) that rely heavily on supervised training and a broad set of language resources that can be difficult to collect from ethnic communities. Recently, a machine speech chain mechanism was proposed to enable ASR and TTS to assist each other in semi-supervised learning. The framework was initially implemented only for monolingual languages. In this study, we focus on developing speech recognition and synthesis for these Indonesian ethnic languages: Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, and Bataks. We first separately train ASR and TTS of standard Indonesian in supervised training. We then develop ASR and TTS of ethnic languages by utilizing Indonesian ASR and TTS in a cross-lingual machine speech chain framework with only text or only speech data removing the need for paired speech-text data of those ethnic languages. From generation to generation, the Sultans of Yogyakarta are the traditional governors of the city and responsible for passing on art and culture heritage. The entire royal family is involved in preserving these art forms, and the troupe must perform with a member of the royal family present. The dances from Yogyakarta will be accompanied by gamelan music native to Java. Program Golek Menak Umarmaya Umarmadi Dance Masked Dance Fragment (Wayang Wong) “Klana Sewandana Gandrung” Bedhaya Sang Amurwabhumi About the forms: Golek Menak The golek menak is a contemporary example of the seminal influence exerted by the puppet theater on other Javanese performing arts. This dance was inspired by the stick–puppet theater (wayang golek), popular in the rural area of Yogyakarta. Using the three dimensional rod-puppets, it portrays episodes from a series of stories known as menak. Unlike the high-art wayang kulit (shadow puppets), it is a village entertainment, and it did not flourish at the court. As a dance drama, golek menak focuses on imitating this rod-puppet theater with amazing faithfulness. Human dancers realistically imitate the smallest details of puppet movement, right down to the stylized breathing of the puppets. -

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Language is primary tool for communicating. Every language has several entities that may not be owned by the other languages, on the other word, language is special and unique. The uniqueness of the language is strongly influenced by the culture of native speaker. Therefore, the language varies cross-culturally. Language also become a tool for social interaction whereas every interlocutor has their own style that can be heard when doing conversation. Moreover, the manner of conversation that is done by people is an important thing that should be more considered. According to Yule (1996), people who involved in interaction indirectly make the norms and principles that arise in the community as their politeness standards (Yule, 1996). Language often expresses the speaker's identity, as well as regional languages in Indonesia such Betawinese, Javanese, Sundanese etc. According to research that was conducted by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) found more than a hundred of regional languages in Indonesia have been extinct. One of regional languages that still exist today is Betawi language, which is almost as old as the name of the area where the language is developed, Jakarta. Formed since the 17th century, Jakarta has various ethnicities, races, and social backgrounds, and the original community uses Betawi language as their language of daily life . Betawi language is derived from Malay, and so many Sumatra or Malay Malaysian terms are used in Betawi. One example is the word "Niari" which means today or “hari ini” in Indonesian. Although there are similarities with the Malay Malaysian, but this language has been mixed with foreign languages, such as Dutch, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Bugis, Sumatera and many other languages (Muhadjir, 2000). -

They do it for certain reasons. This paper is to report language awareness among language users and the reasons why people do code-switching in their speech communities. Using an open-ended questionnaire, this research involved 50 participants. They were asked to identify the languages they had in their repertoire, the language they used when they communicate with certain people, and the reasons why they did code-switching in communication. The results showed that, first, the participants had awareness of languages in their repertoire, namely Indonesian, a local language, and English. Second, they admitted that they did code-switching in communication. Thirdly, the reasons for code- switching were to discuss a particular topic, to signal a change of dimension, to signal group membership, and to show affective functions.
