Page 2 Chairman’s Report What better time to be thinking about beer than in the (I hope) warm, dry days of summer? Whether you’re in a town centre pub, or in the garden of one of our smashing country pubs you can’t beat it. By the time you read this (if anybody does), Barrow Hill Roundhouse Rail Ale will, I’m sure, have been another great success. The next festival to look forward to is Matlock and Dales CAMRA’s second beer festival at the Fishpond, Matlock Bath on 8th and 9th August. And we’re pleased to see the launch of another new brewery – Pigeon Fishers in Hollingwood, which completed its first test brew last month. Chesterfield CAMRA holds its annual meeting on 3rd July at the White Swan when all members are encouraged to attend. All committee positions are up for election and our branch secretary, John Rodd, will be pleased to send you information about the positions available. Mick Portman Chesterfield CAMRA Annual General Meeting Chesterfield CAMRA’s AGM will be held at the White Swan, St Mary’s Gate at 8.00 on Thursday 3 July (followed by the usual branch meeting). All branch officer positions are up for election. If a member is interested in any position, he or she should contact the secretary John Rodd - [email protected] - who will send the job description etc. or call Chairman Mick Portman to discuss. Apart from election of officers, the AGM is the opportunity for members to question officers and put forward their ideas on how the branch should operate for the coming year. If you like what we’re doing, come and say so. More importantly, if you don’t, come and tell us what we’re doing wrong and how it can be done better. The Festival takes place across up to 14 venues on Saturday 7th June with a free bus service linking them every half hour. Barlow will also be holding its popular Rock the Carnival event in August – see advert for details. Brampton Recently the brewery has taken delivery of its own bottling plant which will allow the team not only to supply regular beers but also limited run/edition bottling. Watch out for a Spirit of Brampton Mild at approx 42% available in a variety of bottling sizes. The brewery has been invited to the Thornbridge Great Peak Weekender festival of beer to be held at Thornbridge July 4th to 6th July, which will see Brampton beers available alongside a variety of British and American ales. Bumpmill We are very excited to announce we will soon be opening Matlock’s first micro pub, taking over what was the Central Cafe on Smedley Street. Stanley’s Alehouse will be a small, cosy, traditional micro pub serving our own beers alongside an ever changing variety of quality micro brewery beers. New beers about to hit the bar are Lightning Bolt 4.6% - a refreshingly smooth golden ale named after one of our favourite songs by Jake Bugg - and Mr Brightside at a pleasant 3.8% Everards Whakatu (pronounced fak-a-too), with its distinctive Maori inspired pump clip, is back in Everards pubs. Whakatu derives from the Maori name for Nelson, reflecting its fusion of Nelson Sauvin and Challenger hops, and is a light golden ale which has a crisp, dry bitter taste with hints of gooseberry and kiwi. Pigeon Fishers This brand new brewery based in Hollingwood launched its first test brew at Page 5 Brewery News cont. the Rail Ale Festival last month. Brewer Ade Cole would like to thank the many members of the local brewing community who have helped to get the new brewery off the ground, and hopes a ‘non-test’ beer will be appearing on a bar near you very soon! Raw By the end of May we should have our new 12 Barrel FV installed, which will be the first part of our expansion. This will take us up to five brews - just over 30 barrels per week. We are also bringing in a new conditioning tank so we can start to hand fill kegs on site and increase our keg range. Zenith Pale and Majic Mild have done well over the Spring and will soon be replaced with the summer specials Solstice 3.8% and Apollo Summer 3.8%. There will also be a new Ghost IPA 5.9% coming out soon in keg and we are hoping to get the Baby Ghost 3.9% released soon too. June will see us joining forces again with ICCB for the music and beer festival at the Speedwell Rooms in Staveley 13th - 15th June and we’ll be bringing back the ICCB Colliers Brass 3.7% for this. Hopefully later in June Antoni will have his brewpub in Sardinia up and running and Dave will be heading over as soon as possible to brew with him. We have been invited already to this year’s Sardinian beer festival and hope to be receiving some of Antoni’s Trulla beer soon for the Raw Pubs. Thornbridge After sifting through hundreds of entries the BBC Food Awards judging panel for the Best Drink Producer awarded the accolade for 2014 to Thornbridge Brewery. The BBC award is made to the company that uses “carefully sourced ingredients and skill to produce an outstanding drink”. With the number of entries in the category doubling in 2014, judge Victoria Moore said the task was “Incredibly tough” but that Thornbridge was “the one we were talking about weeks after the visit”. Thornbridge’s Head Brewer Rob Lovatt was delighted “I’ve just returned from the World Beer Cup with a medal for our beer and so to win this award so soon after is a real testament to the hard work all my team put in day in and day out.” Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Pub News It’s almost time to search through the wardrobe again, as we approach the Roy Shorrock Hawaiian Shirt Appreciation Day 2014. This annual event will take place as usual at the Arkwright Arms on 5th July, with live music from 12:00 till midnight. This year’s event will be bigger than ever, with more space, more bars and more food. See the Appreciation Day Facebook page for details. Local Micropub, the Chesterfield Alehouse on West Bars, supported CAMRA’s Mild Month throughout May by dedicating at least one of their six handpumps to showcase Milds from breweries near and far. It has also been accredited by CAMRA’s LocAle scheme. Easter saw the Rose and Crown hold another successful St George’s Day beer festival. June will of course see the World Cup in Brazil take place and for those who like a bit of football with their real ale, the pub will be showing all the matches. Keep your eye out for the Brampton Brewery / Rose and Crown Flag that will be making an appearance at each England game ... so three games at least !! For those that prefer a ‘football free’ environment, the Tramway Tavern are promising to look after you with no mention of the World Cup, just good beer and conversation! Thanks to everyone who contributed so well to the raffle in aid of Ashgate Hospice held at the recent celebration evening in the Derby Tup for 30 consecutive years in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide. There were prizes aplenty ranging from presentation cased beers, gallons of ale, polo shirts, wines, chocolates, mugs, Sunday lunches, Rail Ale tickets and a group brewery tour - all kindly donated by Ashover, Barlow, Brampton, Castle Rock and Townes breweries; the Derby Tup, Barrow Hill Rail Ale Festival and the Rose and Crown, Page 9 Chesterfield Arms Newbold Road Chesterfield S41 7PH 01246 236634 Cider & Perry Festival Thu 21st - Sat 23rd Aug Live Music Thu & Sat Nights Try our sister pubs Chesterfield Arms - Chesterfield, S41 7PH Crown Inn - Beeston, NG9 1FY Sir John Borlase Warren - Nottingham NG7 3GD Passionate about beer Passionate about pubs Passionate about brewing Visit us at brownalesbrewery.co.uk Page 10 Pub News cont.

Starkin A Thesis Presented for the Master of Arts in Creative Writing Degree The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga Rebecca W. Miller March 20 Copyright 2010 by Rebecca W. Miller All rights reserved. Acknowledgment I would like to say thank you to all the professors at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga who helped me complete my thesis. Sybil Baker, Thomas Balazs, Earl Braggs, Joyce Smith and many others have helped influence my writing for the better over the last few years. I appreciate the opportunity to work with them to realize my dream of completing my master‘s degree. Also, I could not have survived the trials of graduate school along with my full-time job if it were not for the endless support of my friends and family. I am very happy that I could count on Mom, Dad, Alex, Grandma, Fundy, Crystal and Holly to give me their full support as well as a kick in the pants when needed. Abstract In traditional fantasy novels, as established with J.R.R. Tolkien‘s Lord of the Rings, the main character embarks on a heroic journey. As defined by Joseph Campbell, who was the author, editor and translator of books on mythology such as The Hero with a Thousand Faces a heroic journey is an epic quest that leads the hero physically to an internal rebirth. Within Campbell‘s study of the monomyth, using those conventions outlined by Campbell, I will show how Tolkien elements uses Campbell‘s conventions in Middle Earth, where a simple young hobbit ends up saving his world.

  • Readers' Guide
Readers’ Guide for by J.R.R. Tolkien ABOUT THE BOOK Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit— a hairy-footed race of diminutive peoples in J.R.R. Tolkien’s imaginary world of Middle-earth — and the protagonist of The Hobbit (full title: The Hobbit or There and Back Again), Tolkien’s fantasy novel for children first published in 1937. Bilbo enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. He does not seek out excitement or adventure. But his contentment is dis- turbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum, and entwine his fate with armies of goblins, elves, men and dwarves. He also discovers he’s more mischievous, sneaky and clever than he ever thought possible, and on his adventure, he finds the courage and strength to do the most surprising things. The plot of The Hobbit, and the circumstances and background of magic ring, later become central to the events of Tolkien’s more adult fantasy sequel, The Lord of the Rings. “One of the best children’s books of this century.” — W. H. AUDEN “One of the most freshly original and delightfully imaginative books for children that have appeared in many a long day .

But, mostly, they do not think beyond the real world. Only a few people like novelists and scientists give more importance to their creativity. In fantasy novels, imaginative power is the key element to unlock a story which is stored in the mind. The author gives soul to the story with his imagination. J.R.R. Tolkien, a well-known twentieth century British writer, has used his incomparable imaginative power to create a new world ‗Middle-Earth‘ and a new creature like hobbit, a fictional character. ―In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit‖ (The Hobbit 3). Tolkien created Middle-Earth and fictional characters inspired by Anglo- Saxon literature when he was working as a professor of English Language and Literature in Merton College, Oxford. I. INTRODUCTION Fantasy has become a major area of profit-making fiction. Tolkien‘s The Hobbit is inscription on behalf of both kids and adult readers.
