Through intense coverage and negative reporting from the media, JetBlue launched a multi-pronged crisis communication response strategy to repair the damage. Using Situational Crisis Communications Theory (SCCT) as a framework, the research in this study demonstrated the importance of crisis communications planning, corporate apologia, corporate impression management, and image restoration within an organization. A discourse analysis was utilized to identify the types of messages delivered by the media, the crisis response strategies and tactics implemented by JetBlue, and stakeholder reactions to the JetBlue responses. Content from the messages were then placed in appropriate categories identifying the type of strategy and tactic utilized. Category definitions, examples of comments, and the identifying attributes were included to help support that JetBlue was successful in repairing and recovering their reputation. ii There are several individuals that I am dedicating this project to as I never would have been able to succeed and persevere without their support, push, and love. I owe tremendous thanks to my professional mentors, Dianne Owen and Jim Thornberry. Dianne is a mentor that everyone dreams of having, simply because she sees the best in you and won’t let you give up on yourself. She also pushed me to complete my Masters for me – no one else. Graduate school would never have been possible without her. Jim Thornberry is my version of Obi-Wan and he lit a fire under me to make graduate school a reality. My family is my bedrock and my brothers Will and Mike cheered me on every step of the way during my program, all through the hurdles going on simultaneously. Ten JetBlue airplanes were grounded at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport for up to eight hours each due to an ice storm. Passengers were unable to de-plane as there were no available gates. Some planes’ wheels were frozen to the ground. De-icing each aircraft took at least 30 minutes. What was the impact of this event on passengers? Passengers were essentially stranded in what one individual described as a “sound- proofed coffin” (www.cnn.com, 2007) with poor air circulation, low supplies of food and drinks, and a lack of fundamental communication from the flight crew. Said one stranded passenger, “One of the pilots should get out here and have a mini-press conference. The longer they wait, the more people are going to get upset” (www.cnn.com, 2007). Passengers were eventually able to disembark with buses from the port authority taking weary travelers back to the airport. JetBlue had offered to provide customers with a full-refund and a free future round-trip ticket for those that were stranded more than three hours. But the damage to the customer-organization relationship had already been done. Consumerist.com named the crisis one of the top ten biggest business debacles in 2007 (www.consumerist.com, 2007). Pop culture quickly coined it “the Valentine’s Day Massacre” (Basulto, 2007). Media coverage of the flight delay dominated the airwaves almost immediately, with all major networks and newspapers reporting that passengers were stranded and unsure when flights would again resume. Flights were cancelled on a Friday. JetBlue indicated to the media that the normal flight schedule would be in operation that Monday. Then flights were cancelled again, with normal operations not resuming until Wednesday, February 19, five days after the initial 1 delays. With the media recording and reporting JetBlue’s every move, and disgruntled passengers venting their frustrations to both reporters and online social media sites, JetBlue’s

    A YEN FOR THE DOLLAR: Airlines and the Transformation of US-Japanese Tourism, 1947-1 977 Douglas Karsner Department of History Bloomsburg University This article examines the transformation of transpacific tourism between the United States and Japan from 1947 to 1977, focusing on the key role that Pan American World Airways, Northwest Orient Airlines, and Japan Airlines played in this development. In the late 1940s, travel was mostly by a small upper class leisure market cruising on ships. Linkages between the air carriers and other factors, including governmental policy, travel organizations, and changes in business and culture influenced the industry. By the 1970s, these elements had reshaped the nature and geography of tourism, into a mass airline tourist market characterized by package tours, special interest trips, and consumer values. Between 1947 and 1977, several factors helped transform the nature of transpacific tourism between the United States and Japan. Pan American Airways, Northwest Airlines, and Japan Airlines played crucial roles in this development. These airline companies employed various marketing strategies, worked with travel associations, tapped into expanding consumer values, and pressured governments. Simultaneously, decisions made by tourist organizations, consumers, and especially governments also shaped this process. The evolution of transpacific tourism occurred in three stages, growing slowly from 1947 to 1954, accelerating in the period to 1964, and finally developing into a mass leisure market by the 1970s.’ When the US State Department officially permitted Pan American Airways and Northwest Airlines to start offering regularly scheduled service to Japan in August 1947, few American tourists wanted to make the journey. This was largely because they would have had to obtain a passport from the State Department and a certificate from the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

This plane had its origins in 1964, when Boeing began work on a proposal for the C-5A large military airlifter contract, and after Lockheed won that contest, Boeing considered a commercial passenger version as a means of salvaging the program. Urged on by Pan Am president Juan Trippe, Boeing in 1965 assigned a team headed by Chief Engineer Joe Sutter to design a large new airliner, although Boeing at the time was really more focused on its supersonic transport (SST) program. A launch customer order from Pan Am on April 13, 1966 for twenty five aircraft pushed Sutter's program into high gear, and in a truly herculian effort, Joe Sutter and his Boeing team, dubbed “The Incredibles,” brought the program from inception on paper to the public unveiling of a finished aircraft in the then unheard of time of 29 months. The world’s deadliest runway accident occurred on March 27, 1977, when Pan Am (PAA) flight 1736, a Boeing 747, and KLM4805, a Boeing 747, collided on runway 12 at Tenerife, Canary Islands, killing 583 passengers and crew. KLM4805 departed runway 12 without a takeoff clearance colliding with PAA1736 that was taxiing on the same runway during instrument meteorological conditions. The Spanish government determined the cause was: “The KLM aircraft had taken off without take-off clearance, in the absolute conviction that this clearance had been obtained, which was the result of a misunderstanding between the tower and the KLM aircraft. This misunderstanding had arisen from the mutual use of usual terminology which, however, gave rise to misinterpretation. In combination with a number of other coinciding circumstances, the premature take-off of the KLM aircraft resulted in a collision with the Pan Am aircraft, because the latter was still on the runway since it had missed the correct intersection.” ● Lexington, Kentucky, August 27, 2006 (49 fatalities). The deadliest runway accident in the United States occurred on August 27, 2006, at about 0606 eastern daylight time when Comair flight 5191, a Bombardier CL-600-2B19, N431CA, crashed during takeoff from Blue Grass Airport, Lexington, Kentucky. The flight crew was instructed to take off from runway 22 but instead lined up the airplane on runway 26 and began the takeoff roll. The airplane ran off the end of the runway and impacted the airport perimeter fence, trees, and terrain.

A tastefully appointed 2,285 square-foot space on the lobby level, Suite # 176 houses a Board Room, administrative space, kitchenette and a hotelling area. The space was first used for the December meeting of The Executive Committee of the Board and was formally dedicated at the January 2011 meeting of the Board of Governors. In addition to the historical aviation significance of our new home, the layout enables us to showcase numerous pieces of the Club’s art collection, that has been in storage since 2002. A walk around the Board Room and offices is like a lesson in the history of our industry. Particularly compelling is the set of 8 cloud paintings by Eric Sloane, including the 12 foot painting that hung in the lobby at 52 Vanderbilt Avenue, which now bedecks the media wall in the Board Room. There is also a set of 6 paintings of fighter planes by Clayton Knight that were in the dining room at 52 Vanderbilt and 12 paintings and prints by John McCoy. March 15, 2004, Shorewood, WI. The IdeaWorks Company has compared the leading low-fare airlines in the United States on the basis of frequent flyer program benefits. Twelve airlines were included in the survey: AirTran Airways, Allegiant Air, ATA Airlines, Frontier Airlines, jetBlue Airways, Pan Am, Southeast Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, TransMeridian Airlines and USA3000 Airlines. These airlines are among those recognized by the USDOT as low-fare carriers due to operating cost advantages enjoyed over network carriers such as American Airlines and Northwest Airlines. Recently launched low-fare brands operated by network carriers, such as Song by Delta Air Lines and Ted by United Airlines, were not included in the survey completed by IdeaWorks. Five low-cost carriers, representing the largest airlines of the group in terms of available passenger seats, were found to offer traditional frequent flyer programs: AirTran Airways, ATA Airlines, Frontier Airlines, jetBlue and Southwest Airlines. These programs allow passengers to accrue benefits from flight activity in the form of miles, points or credits; which may be redeemed for free airline travel. Southwest has the longest tenure among the group with the launch of a frequent flyer program in 1987. The number of low-fare carriers offering frequent flyer programs grew to five airlines by 2002. All of these programs offered the feature of automated flight tracking by November, 2003.
