A year later, the Texas Fuel Company gambled its future and bought the drilling rights at Sour Lake. Despite all the odds against them, they struck oil in March 1903. The discovery, during a heavy downpour near Sour Lake’s mineral springs, turned the company into a major oil producer overnight, validating the risk-taking insight of company co-founder, J.S. Cullinan, and the ability of driller, Walter Sharp.

The Texas Fuel Company registered its first trademark, the original red star with a green capital letter “T” superimposed on it, in 1909. Despite subtle design changes, the Texaco star remained an essential component of the company logo for decades. Eventually the company changed its name to Texaco and started selling gasoline at company-owned service stations throughout the United States and in Canada. We are excited to add them to the list of trustworthy accredited businesses you can find 24 hours a day at bbb.org. We have had a productive start to 2015 and are excited about our upcoming events in the second half of the year.

Over 100 business leaders networked and heard a wonderfully entertaining presentation on Culture Change within an Organization at our Quarterly Lunch and Learn in May with Chris Partin, Team Building Coach at CEPMax. We invite you to join us at our next Lunch and Learn event in August with the exciting return of Bruce Hamilton – Mr. No Bad Days himself – to the BBB stage!

Our 18th annual Torch Awards for Marketplace Trust Banquet was a fantastic evening, highlighted by our special guest – 4-time Olympian Ruben Gonzalez. Torch Awards were presented to 4 outstanding organizations, with the proceeds from the evening going to fund our endowed scholarships at our 4 area higher education institutions. We were also pleased to hear from one of our scholarship recipients from Lamar University, Jonathan Gay and from one of the top winners in our Laws of Life Essay contest, Abby Goff, from Legacy Christian Academy.

We also have a variety of Morning Mix Networking events planned throughout the summer across our service area and our next Quarterly “ABC’s of Growing Your Business” on July 23, at the MCM Elegante in Beaumont. It was a time with a slower pace and fewer demands. The 50s and 60s were the age of listening to your elders as they spoke of the “good old days,” spinning yarns, and mixing history with tall tales…like “The Pink Palace Fish Camp.”
