This is an electronic, pre-publication version of an article published in Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television. Digital dialectics: the paradox of cinema in a studio without walls Scott McQuire There’s a scene in Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, Paramount Pictures; USA, 1994) which encapsulates the novel potential of the digital threshold. The scene itself is nothing spectacular. It involves neither exploding spaceships, marauding dinosaurs, nor even the apocalyptic destruction of a postmodern cityscape. Rather, it depends entirely on what has been made invisible within the image. The scene, in which actor Gary Sinise is shown in hospital after having his legs blown off in battle, is noteworthy partly because of the way that director Robert Zemeckis handles it. Sinise has been clearly established as a full-bodied character in earlier scenes. When we first see him in hospital, he is seated on a bed with the stumps of his legs resting at its edge. The assumption made by most spectators, whether consciously or unconsciously, is that the shot is tricked up; that Sinise’s legs are hidden beneath the bed, concealed by a hole cut through the mattress. This would follow a long line of film practice in faking amputations, inaugurated by the famous stop-motion beheading in the Edison Company’s Death of Mary Queen of Scots (aka The Execution of Mary Stuart, Thomas A.

  • Six Projects Selected for 2013 Rawi Screenwriters Lab in Jordan
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: November 1, 2013 Casey De La Rosa 310.360.1981 [email protected] Six Projects Selected for 2013 Rawi Screenwriters Lab in Jordan Led By The Royal Film Commission-Jordan in Consultation with Sundance Institute, Lab Supports Emerging Filmmakers in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine Los Angeles, CA — Screenwriting fellows for the ninth edition of the Rawi Screenwriters Lab (November 1-5) were announced today by The Royal Film Commission-Jordan and Sundance Institute. The Lab is an example of Sundance Institute’s longstanding work to support emerging filmmakers around the world. Former Rawi Fellows include Cherien Dabis (Amreeka), Mohammed Al Daradji (Son of Babylon), Sally El Hosaini (My Brother The Devil) and Haifaa Al Mansour (Wadjda). Launched in 2005, the Lab is led by the Royal Film Commission of Jordan (RFC) and managed by Deema Azar, in consultation with Sundance Institute’s Feature Film Program, under the direction of Michelle Satter. The Lab provides an opportunity for filmmakers from the region to develop their work under the guidance of accomplished Creative Advisors—this year including Jeremy Pikser (Bulworth), Najwa Najjar (Pomegranates & Myrrh), Mo Ogrodnick (Deep Powder). Aseel Mansour (Line Of Sight), Rose Troche (The L Word, The Safety Of Objects) and Jerome Boivin (La cloche a sonné)—in an environment that encourages storytelling at the highest level. George David, General Manager of the RFC, said, “For the ninth consecutive year, RAWI continues to unveil the regions’ exceptional talent and narratives as part of the RFC’s goal to champion a new generation of Arab film professionals who will represent our noble culture and values, our triumphs and struggles and our hopes and dreams through their films.” Paul Federbush, International Director of the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program, said, “We’ve had the privilege to help give voice to some extraordinary new filmmakers in the region over our nine-year partnership with the RFC.

  • What Characters Learn and What They Never Will
What characters learn and what they never will This session was written by Lucy for The Script Factory’s I © screenwriting course presented at BFI Southbank, June 2013. The teaching points in this lecture are mostly illustrated with reference to the following four films: Argo (dir. Ben Affleck, scr. Chris Terrio, 2012) Sightseers (dir. Ben Wheatley, scr. Alice Lowe & Steve Oram, 2012) Up in the Air (dir. Jason Reitman, scr. Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner, 2009) Animal Kingdom (dir./scr. David Michod, 2010) Screenwriting lore dictates that characters should learn life-improving lessons through their experiences. Pardon our French, but that’s bullsh*t! In many films the external challenges the character faces are so great that it’s imperative that they are equipped with the necessary attributes to tackle those obstacles from the outset. In other movies the characters remain obstinate despite what life throws at them and their inability to change is exactly what the film is about. This session examines how to chart convincing character journeys and, if your character does need to overcome a flawed attitude to life, how to ensure that the difference in whom they are at the beginning and end of the film is clearly marked. By far the most vital way that an audience literally gets on board with what’s at stake in a story is through the characters. This is because we generally go to see films in order to have an emotional experience. There are probably exceptions but, on the whole, we don’t buy tickets because we want to be educated, we are not hoping to improve our minds or learn a lesson – we are going to the cinema to have a vicarious experience through watching characters do stuff.

The festival presents 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. A portion of the festival’s income goes toward on-going renovations at the theatre. The festival brings together the films’ producers, writers, actors and directors to help showcase their work. A film- maker or scholar introduces each film, and each screening is followed by a substantive on-stage Q&A discussion among filmmakers, critics and the audience. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts a number of academic panel discussions featuring filmmaker guests, scholars and students. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked.

Rhodes Editorial Board: Kelly Basilio, Donna Campbell, Claire Perkins, Christopher Sharrett, and Yannis Tzioumakis ReFocus is a series of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to the interdisciplinary analyses and interpretations of neglected American directors, from the once-famous to the ignored, in direct relationship to American culture—its myths, values, and historical precepts. The series ignores no director who created a historical space—either in or out of the studio system—beginning from the origins of American cinema and up to the present. These directors produced film titles that appear in university film history and genre courses across international boundaries, and their work is often seen on television or available to download or purchase, but each suffers from a form of “canon envy”; directors such as these, among other important figures in the general history of American cinema, are underrepresent ed in the critical dialogue, yet each has created American narratives, works of film art, that warrant attention. ReFocus brings these American film directors to a new audience of scholars and general readers of both American and Film Studies. Titles in the series include: ReFocus: The Films of Preston Sturges Edited by Jeff Jaeckle and Sarah Kozloff ReFocus: The Films of Delmer Daves Edited by Matthew Carter and Andrew Nelson ReFocus: The Films of Amy Heckerling Edited by Frances Smith and Timothy Shary ReFocus: The Films of Budd Boetticher Edited by Gary D.

  • Elysium & Avatar
DOI: 10.32001/sinecine.741686 • Araştırma Makalesi | Research Article BETWEEN GREEN PARADISE AND BLEAK CALAMITY: ELYSIUM & AVATAR Cenk Tan Abstract Literary utopias and dystopias reflect a wide variety of concerns, from class and gender issues to the environment. These works not only reflect current social matters but also provide a glimpse of possible futures and a warning of perils to come. This article analyzes two science fiction films that have been in the spotlight during the last decade: Elysium (Neill Blomkamp, 2013) and Avatar (James Cameron, 2009). The two films depict disparate, dystopian visions of humanity’s future, yet both center on the themes of colonialism and the exploitation of the natural environment and offer ambiguous, open-ended conclusions. Focusing on these themes, this study applies postcolonial ecocriticism to expose the relationship between colonialism and ecocriticism and to show that the subtexts of both films deliver messages about the irrevocable destruction of the natural environment as an unconditional result of colonialism, impressing upon viewers the urgent need to adopt and implement an ecocentric mentality that will lead humanity to a peaceful and sustainable future. Keywords: Elysium, Avatar, Utopian/Dystopian fiction, film studies, postcolonial ecocriticism. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. Our publications include the book “Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language”; “The Women’s Media Center’s Media Guide to Gender Neutral Coverage of Women Candidates + Politicians”; “The Women’s Media Center Media Guide to Covering Reproductive Issues”; “WMC Media Watch: The Gender Gap in Coverage of Reproductive Issues”; “Writing Rape: How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault”; “WMC Investigation: 10-Year Review of Gender & Emmy Nominations”; and the Women’s Media Center’s annual WMC Status of Women in the U.S.
