Each chapter is devoted to an individual novel and explores its hero's feelings of socio-psychological estrangement on personal and interpersonal levels as well as the role of the train journey which serves to arouse, create or alleviate such feelings. Chapter One deals with Sanshiro (Sanshiro. 1908) by Natsume Soseki and follows the hero on his long train journey from backward Kyushu to progressive Tokyo. -
Poetic Constraints of Lyric by Nicholas Andrew Theisen a Dissertation
Re[a]ding and Ignorance: Poetic Constraints of Lyric by Nicholas Andrew Theisen A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Comparative Literature) in The University of Michigan 2009 Doctoral Committee: Professor E. Ramirez-Christensen, Chair Professor Marjorie Levinson Associate Professor Johanna H. Prins Associate Professor Joseph D. Reed © Nicholas Andrew Theisen 2009 For no one ii Acknowledgements The work concluded, tentatively, with this dissertation would not have been possible without the continued intellectual engagement with my colleagues within and without the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan, especially (in no particular order) Michael Kicey, Meng Liansu, Sylwia Ejmont, Carrie Wood, and Sharon Marquart. I have benefited much from Jay Reed’s friendly antagonism, Marjorie Levinson’s keen insight, Esperanza Ramirez-Christensen’s grounding levity, and Yopie Prins’s magnanimity. But beyond the academic sphere, more or less, I’m am deeply indebted to Kobayashi Yasuko for reminding me that, to some, poetry matters as more than a mere figure of academic discourse and to my wife Colleen for her wholly unexpected insights and seemingly infinite patience. I have likely forgotten to mention numerous people; consider this my I.O.U. on a free drink. iii Table of Contents Dedication ii Acknowledgements iii List of Abbreviations vi List of Figures vii Chapters 1. Contemporary World Cinema Brian Owens, Artistic Diretor – Nashville Film Festival
Contemporary World Cinema Brian Owens, Artistic Diretor – Nashville Film Festival OLLI Winter 2015 Term Tuesday, January 13 Viewing Guide – The Cinema of Europe These suggested films are some that will or may come up for discussion during the first course. If you go to Netflix, you can use hyperlinks to find further suggestions. The year listed is the year of theatrical release in the US. Some films (Ida for instance) may have had festival premieres in the year prior. VOD is “Video On Demand.” Note: It is not necessary to see any or all of the films, by any means. These simply serve as a guide for the discussion. You can also use IMDB.com (Internet Movie Database) to search for other works by these filmmakers. You can also keep this list for future viewing after the session, if that is what you prefer. Most of the films are Rated R – largely for language and brief nudity or sexual content. I’ve noted in bold the films that contain scenes that could be too extreme for some viewers. In the “Additional works” lines, those titles are noted by an asterisk. Force Majeure Director: Ruben Östlund. 2014. Sweden. 118 minutes. Rated R. A family on a ski holiday in the French Alps find themselves staring down an avalanche during lunch. The Auteurial-National Nexus and Aki Kaurismäki's Finland Trilogy
“Our Aki” The auteurial-national nexus and Aki Kaurismäki’s Finland trilogy Sanna Peden Bachelor of Arts (European Studies) Honours This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Humanities European Studies 2012 Abstract This thesis explores the interconnections of ‘Finnishness’ and ‘Kaurismäkianness’ in and around Aki Kaurismäki’s so-called Finland trilogy: Drifting Clouds (1996), The Man Without A Past (2002) and Lights in the Dusk (2006). The thesis addresses how Kaurismäki, whose work and public persona have tended to be critical of national institutions and preoccupations, has developed into an increasingly national figure in Finland’s years of Europeanisation. In order to examine the links between ‘Finnishness’ and ‘Kaurismäkianness’ I establish, first, the way in which Kaurismäki’s films engage with national themes; and, second, the way in which this Kaurismäkian take on Finnishness is received and further appropriated in Finland. I provide a textual analysis of each of the focus films, paying particular attention to their national aspects and their references to Kaurismäki’s other films. I combine this close analysis of the film texts with discussion of the context of the films, their media presence and ‘afterlife’, for example the discourses surrounding the films after their initial release or the ways in which their ‘Kaurismäkianness’ has been appropriated by others for specifically national purposes. In seeking to understand how Kaurismäki’s auteurial engagement with narratives of Finnishness feeds back into Finnish society this thesis contributes to current debates about the relationship between auteurs and national identity. -
Kaurismäki Spring Series
UC Berkeley Finnish Studies proudly presents: Kaur ism äk i Spring Four Aki Kaurismäki films With English subtitles @ 7 PM Dwinelle Hall B-37 DATES 2/17/15 Varjoja paratiisissa (Shadows in Paradise) 3/10/15 Ariel 4/7/15 Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö (The Match Factory Girl) 4/28/15 Mies vailla menneisyyttä (The Man Without a Past) UC Berkeley Finnish Studies proudly presents Kaurismäki-kevät / Kaurismäki Spring Finnish movie nights continue this Spring with films by the famed director, Aki Kaurismäki movies. Four Tuesdays ― four movies. Always at 7 PM in Dwinelle Hall B-37. (http://access-guide.berkeley.edu/buildings/dwinelle-hall) Aki Kaurismäki is a well known and, very likely, the most highly acclaimed Finnish writer- director. He began his career writing the screenplay and playing the leading role in Valehtelija (The Liar) (1981) directed by his brother, Mika. The first movie Aki Kaurismäki directed himself was a filming based on Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment in 1983. Kaurismäki is known for his minimalistic style, laconic humor and themes that go deep into the Finnish melancholy. The characters in Kaurismäki’s movies speak standard language, have poor backgrounds – and often stand still while having their dialogues. The Kaurismäki Spring will start with the three movies of his “Proletariat Trilogy”: Shadows in Paradise (1986), Ariel (1988) and The Match Factory Girl (1990). In this trilogy Kaurismäki’s themes entwine tightly around Finnish society and the destinies of working class people. Kaurismäki himself has stated he used to call it a Loser Trilogy instead of Proletariat Trilogy because does not see the main characters as average workers. -

Nemla Program
Northeast Modern Language Association 38th Convention March 1-4, 2007 Baltimore, Maryland Host Institution: Johns Hopkins University Special thanks to Stephen G. Nichols, Chair, Dept. of Romance Languages & Literatures, and Amanda Anderson, Chair, Dept. of English 1 2 Dear NeMLA Friends — Thank you for welcoming me as Executive Director of the Northeast Modern Language Association with the panels and presentations that you have created and are presenting this weekend. This is the largest and most diverse convention that NeMLA has presented in years. It has been an amazing challenge and a pleasure to put this together for you. NeMLA is deeply committed to promoting teaching and scholarship in the modern languages. This year has seen a particular increase in panels in Italian, Spanish, German and French. The Board created new Board positions in Comparative Literatures and Popular Culture to support the growing interest in interdisciplinary work and in other foreign languages. Your strong response to NeMLA elections this year helps assure that the Board will continue to be responsive and proactive to meeting the needs of our members. NeMLA has also worked this year to improve our service to our members. We were able to decrease our fees by 8% and to reduce our media charges from $40 to $10. My predecessor Josephine McQuail established research fellowships with the Newberry Library, in addition to our Summer fellowships and American Antiquarian Society. In addition to increasing the number of travel grants awarded to graduate students, we also created the Graduate Student Assistantship program, to provide support and administrative opportunities. Our new webmasters Vincent Guihan and Andrew Schopp have streamlined and improved our website to improve communication. -
