The Letters and Legacy of Mary Ann Mccracken (1770-1866) Cathryn Bronwyn McWilliams The Letters and Legacy of Mary Ann McCracken Cathryn McWilliams Bronwyn (1770–1866) This study provides the first scholarly edition of the correspondence of Belfast humanitarian activist Mary Ann McCracken, fully annotated, complete with accompanying contextual, Cathryn Bronwyn McWilliams biographical and technical commentary. In bringing together and sequencing all of McCracken’s extant letters for the first time, the work seeks to give a greater insight into her later life and views, as well as shed new light The Letters and Legacy on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Irish society, the rapidly-changing environment of Belfast itself, and women’s history in Ireland more widely.     Republican SINN FÉIN Poblachtach Theobald Wolfe Tone Commemoration Bodenstown, County Kildare 2000 ‘Former Republicans have been bought off with palliatives’ Cathleen Knowles McGuirk, Vice President Republican Sinn Féin delivered the oration at the grave of Theobald Wolfe Tone, the founder of Irish Republicanism, on Sunday, June 11 in Bodenstown cemetery, outside Sallins, Co Kildare. The large crowd, led by a colour party carrying the National Flag and contingents of Cumann na mBan and Na Fianna Éireann, as well as the General Tom Maguire Flute Band from Belfast marched the three miles from Sallins Village to the grave of Wolfe Tone at Bodenstown. Contingents from all over Ireland as well as visitors from Britain and the United States took part in the march, which was marshalled by Seán Ó Sé, Dublin. At the graveside of Wolfe Tone the proceedings were chaired by Seán Mac Oscair, Fermanagh, Ard Chomhairle, Republican Sinn Féin who said he was delighted to see the large number of young people from all over Ireland in attendance this year. The ceremony was also addressed by Peig Galligan on behalf of the National Graves Association, who care for Ireland’s patriot graves. Róisín Hayden read a message from Republican Sinn Féin Patron, George Harrison, New York. As a person who guards her privacy, it’s one of the few things we have been told about Mrs May. Of course some will say she’s embarrassed to admit it but therein lies the irony: in an age when prejudice and discrimination are legally proscribed, most practising Christians will know only too well what it is to be pilloried for their faith. Whether with private suspicion or public scorn, some will regard the occupant of Number 10’s weekly appointment with God as a sign of personal weakness, if not a reason to question her motives and judgment. Surely better a Prime Minister who knows she is accountable to a power higher than the passing fancy of the electorate. Better someone who knows that on her own she does not have all the answers – who sees the need for a corrective to the ego-maniacal tendency at work in all of us. It won’t make her perfect, but maybe she’ll be clearer about her imperfections. And who would begrudge the lady one hour a week telephone call and meeting free, a sixty minute reminder that despite appearances, she’s not really in charge at all. SED. Where is your Chair In the conservatory? On the patio perhaps? Maybe you’ve got a balcony, a summer house, a man/woman-shed or a shady quiet spot in the garden.

We gather here every year to honour Wolfe Tone and the United Irishmen and to rededicate ourselves to the principles they espoused. We remember that it was the actions of the 1916 leaders and their comrades, inspired by such patriot revolutionaries as Tone and Emmett, that lit the flame that eventually destroyed the British Empire and reawakened the republicanism of the Irish people. The first article of the constitution of the Society of United Irishmen stated as its purpose, the 'forwarding a brotherhood of affection, a communion of rights, and an union of power among Irishmen of every religious persuasion'. James Connolly said of Wolfe Tone that he united "the hopes of the new revolutionary faith and the ancient aspirations of an oppressed people".

The First Humanists Humanism is a view of life and a way of life. It is for those people who base their interpretation of existence on the evidence of the natural world and its evolution, and not on belief in a supernatural power. As such, Humanism is older and more universal than Christianity. But when and where did it begin? Of course, there have always been those who doubted the existence of Gods. But we can only look to the written evidence, and it is Protagoras, a teacher and philosopher of the 5th century BC, who is usually regarded as 'the first Humanist'.
