This local tradition does not rely on the written sources and instead carried through oral means and majorly revolves around the lives of the common people. The area of the study of this paper is the hilly region of Kumaon and Garhwal in the state of Uttarakhand. The paper discusses the local beliefs and practices of the Uttarakhand region. It explores the thin boundary between the local and pan-Indian and the relation in which one co-exists in the other. This paper takes a journey from the brief history of religion practiced in the region to the different cults venerated in the region. Analyzing these local cults and practices, the paper finally depicts the processes through which the folk is assimilated into the fold of mainstream Brahmanical culture. A meeting of CFPGS was held on 5th to 8th October, 2020 under the Chairmanship of Smt. Amita Prasad Sarbhai, Joint Secretary (P.Arts & ZCC Bureau) to consider the proposal for financial assistance by the Expert Committee. 2. Under CFPGS Scheme Financial Assistance is given to ‘Not for Profit’ organisations, NGOs including Societies, Trusts, and Universities, for holding Conferences, Seminar, Workshops, Festivals, Exhibitions, Production of Dance, Drama-Theatre, Music and undertaking small research projects etc, on any art forms/important cultural matters relating to different aspects of Indian Culture. The quantum of assistance is restricted to 75% of the total project cost subject to maximum Rs. 5.00 Lakhs per project as recommend by the Expert Committee. The Expert Committee examined a total of 1880 applications in its meeting held during 5th to 8th October, 2020 and after examining each and every proposal individually, has recommended 1001 proposals for financial assistance under the scheme. The daily puja ceremonies in Hanoi are central to the social and spiritual life of the community; ritual drumming is a central component of this ceremony. During the ceremony, the Bajgis, hereditary musicians, perform a series of talas (rhythmic cycles) that bring the spirit of the deity into oracles known as bakis or malis. The temporally and spatially bounded region of performance is a field for the negotiation of identity: the Bajgis are defined reflexively and socially through their drumming, as are the Brahmins by their priestly duties. A variety of ethnographic methods are employed to analyze the religious belief systems, the performer and audience relationship, and reflexive methodologies of participation/observation. The intersubjective nature of this event results from the multiplex of interpretive frames that intersect in its bounded space. Performative activity brings together the fields of self awareness, identity, both personal and collective, the physical process of the body in performance, knowledge and belief systems, all of which culminate in the musical sound. 1 Pandava-Lila as a folk performance in Garhwal: A study of Mahabharata traditions in Uttarakhand (India) Priyatosh Sharma & Ashish Rawat Abstract: Epic traditions have always played a vital role in the dissemination of Indic traditions in the south Asia. Folk traditions have used both Epic and Puranic texts as a reference point, while weaving a complex world of popular beliefs, legends and stories. The process enabled many subaltern sections to have access to textual traditions in the forms of bards. Pandava-lila is one such tradition, which has created a complex world of socio-cultural orders enabling the participating communities a peep into the world of Gods through the medium of Pandavas- the epic Mahabharata’s protagonists. Pandava-lila is not an annual fixed affair. It is often staged to offset a bad omen and seek blessings of the Pandavas for peace and prosperity. The participation of the Pandavas and other gods through human actors makes it an intense religious experience. Pandavas, in their quest to relive the glory of their past, bless the village which gave them a chance to re-enact the various scenes of Mahabharata. Bardic traditions, however, play a significant role in the enactment colouring the whole performance with a local fervor. Various enacted episodes have not been borrowed from the written text but evolved through bardic movement from one region to another. In the process, Pandava-lila has formulated social identities within the region connecting the same to Pan Indian Rajput identity. The first part gives an overview on fairy-related traditions in the high mountains of South Asia. It concentrates on Nuristan and Dardistan2 as well as on Garhwal (there especially on Bangan 3 ) and highlights similarities and differences between these two areas. Moreover, it looks at more distant parallels and at relationships between fairy cults and Hindu Tantrism. The second part presents a recently recorded hymn to the fairy ‘Daughter of the hills’ and discusses its functions and background. The present essay concentrates on these three areas, i.e. references to Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are only occasional even though it is clear that fairies are worshiped also there. However, scholarly literature on fairies in these areas seems to be hardly available. -

K. Dubey, in preparation for a structured interview, I first had to quell his curiosity about my interest in the songs of the region. The explanation I o√ered—that the inquiry was prompted both by my desire to pay homage to the mem- ory of my deceased father and by the opportunity this provided for ‘‘reclaiming’’ the language of my ancestors— so satisfied him that he warmed to me instantly. He found it entirely appropriate for a daughter, especially one married outside the community, to repay her debts in this manner.
