FACT SHEET: TOUR DE FRANCE GRAND DÉPART COPENHAGEN - DENMARK Tour de France Grand Départ Copenhagen Denmark Denmark will host the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2021. Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is the official starting point of the Danish Grand Départ, and in total three Tour stages will take place in Denmark. The three stages will take place on the following dates: July 2nd 2021 Tour de France kicks off with the openings stage, the Grand Départ, in Copenhagen. July 3rd the second stage starts in Roskilde and finishes in Nyborg on the island of Funen. July 4th the third stage starts in Vejle and finishes in Sønderborg. “The greatest cycling race in the world meets the best cycling city in the world" is the slogan of the Danish Grand Départ. Denmark officially placed a bid to host a Tour de France Grand Départ on June 20th 2016 in Paris, where the bid was personally presented to Christian Prudhomme from the ASO by the former Danish Minister for Business and Growth, Troels Lund Poulsen, and the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen. Tour de France will be one of the biggest sports events ever held in Denmark. The Tour de France is broadcast in 190 countries and has millions of TV viewers during the race. Over 900,000 spectators are expected to attend the three stages in Denmark. The Danish stages of Tour de France Grand Départ – approx. 13 kilometres time trial in central Copenhagen. The opening stage starts off on H.C. Andersens Boulevard and finishes on Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square) in Copenhagen after having passed through the heart of Copenhagen including landmarks such as the Royal Palace of Amalienborg, the old charming harbor of Nyhavn and the parliament at Christiansborg. -

INTRODUCTION The Tour de France is ”Grand Tour” equivalent of the Vuelta Espana or the Giro di Italia. However, the Tour de France is the most popular race in the world without hesitation. In the mind of racers, it is more important to win a Tour de France than a world championship. Win Tour de France shows polyvalent qualities of the winner. II. HISTORY A. Creation of the Tour de France The foundations of the Tour de France takes place on a national French scandal. At the end of the year 1984, Alfred Dreyfus who was captain in the French army at this time and by the way was Jew, was convicted to have given secret information to Germans. After several years and several justice judgements, it was proved that Alfred Dreyfus was not the author of the supposed high teason. However, France was separated in two parts: the dreyfusards and the antidreyfusards. The second important fact was that at this time, it was existing only one sport newspaper named ”Le Velo”. ALLA CORRENTE FAUSTO COPPI (1919–1960) From Saturday July 5th to Sunday July 27th, 2014, the 101st Tour de France will take place. This year it is made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,664 kilometers (roughly 2,277 miles). It will begin in the United Kingdom (in Leeds), and will go through Belgium, Spain, and France before ending on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 27. Last July, Alla Corrente described the cycling exploits of one of Italy’s greatest cyclists, Gino Bartali (1914–2000). It also described his other role during World War II as a courier/spy for the Italian resistance, and his efforts to save Jews during the Italian Holocaust and German occupation. Since this is the July 2014 Bulletin and since there is much interest among Cenacolisti about the Tour, I thought it would be appropriate to offer this Alla Cor- rente about another Italian participant in several Tour races who won it in 1949 and in 1952. FAUSTO COPPI was an Italian cyclist and the major challenger to Gino Bartali in many cycling races, including the Tour de France. His successes earned him the title Il Campionissimo, or Champion of Champions. He was an all-round racing cyclist, excelling in both climb- ing and time trials, as well as being a great sprinter. Coppi was one of five children born to Domenico Coppi and Angiolina Boveri. Fausto was the fourth child, born September 15, 1919 in Castel- lania, Piedmont, Italy. His mother wanted to call him Angelo, but his father preferred Fausto; so he was named Angelo Fausto, but was known most of his life as Fausto.
