  • Trendy Hairstyles of the 2000S
Trendy Hairstyles of the 2000s The 2000s sported many different kinds of hairstyles, the lustrous bob, ultra-long cuts, pin-straight and glossy dos were seen frequently. In the first half of the decade, long, curly dos like Debra Messing wore in "Will and Grace" were very popular, with shoulder length curls and long layers cut in. The popularity of longer length cuts re-emerged and as the decade moved on, hair extensions became far more realistic looking, which added to the trend for long hairstyles. In addition, another favored style was adopting the wavy, tousled look, which appeared in the latter part of the decade, and typically seen on medium to long hair. Natural waves are caused by putting wet hair in a ponytail or in two very thick braids, and after removal, beautiful waves appear. A ziz-zag part accompanied this style, to accentuate the casual look. Beachy Waves Beachy Waves is a more relaxed natural style that has been made popular by many of the Victoria Secret's models. This hairstyle expresses a softer, more carefree look, even though most of the time, it does require some sprucing up to achieve it through curling irons or curlers and other salon products. The few people that have © 2015 All Star Training, Inc. naturally wavy hair should add a product to prevent frizziness and should not use a blow dryer but rather let their hair air-dry. African-American Hair Hip Hop culture created an onslaught of new trends, one being the Fade haircut for men. The fade is a hairstyle black men predominately wear in which the hair begins short at the bottom and gets longer as it goes towards the top.

  • Roaring 1920S / “Flappers” Overview Flappers Were a "New Breed" Of
Roaring 1920s / “Flappers” Overview Flappers were a "new breed" of young women in the 1920s who wore short skirts, bobbed (cut short) their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles, and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms. They challenged the previously accepted mores of society in every regard. Flappers had their origins in the liberal period of the Roaring Twenties, and the social, political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of World War I. Name origins The slang word flapper, describing a young woman, is sometimes supposed to refer to a young bird flapping its wings while learning to fly. By 1908, newspapers as serious as The Times used it, although with careful explanation: "A 'flapper', we may explain, is a young lady who has not yet been promoted to long frocks and the wearing of her hair 'up'". However, it may derive from an earlier use in northern England to mean teenage girl, referring to one whose hair is not yet put up and whose plaited pigtail flapped on her back; or from an older word meaning prostitute. (the slang word “flap” was used to mean prostitute as early as 1631; by the 1890s it references both a young prostitute and, in a more general and less derogatory sense, any lively mid-teenage girl.). By 1912, the London theatrical impresario John Tiller, defining the word in an interview he gave to the New York Times, described a "flapper" as belonging to a slightly older age group, a girl who has "just come out".

  • “I Know Just What She Wants”: Constructing Gender, Sexuality, and Relationships on the Doll Forum
“I know just what she wants”: Constructing Gender, Sexuality, and Relationships on The Doll Forum By Meaghen Boiteau A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS Department of Sociology University of Manitoba Winnipeg © March, 2011 by Meaghen Boiteau ABSTRACT Abyss Creations has been creating and selling extremely life-like silicone dolls designed primarily for sex known as Real Dolls since 1996. Since 2001, The Doll Forum has provided an online space where users of Real Dolls are able to connect with one another and discuss a myriad of issues relating to the use of Real Dolls. This thesis explores the specific ways in which members utilize The Doll Forum as a space to discursively construct gender, sexuality, and relationships as they pertain to the use of Real Dolls. Utilizing the theory of performativity, I engage in a Critical Discourse Analysis of one month of posts from The Doll Forum. I argue that through the discussions and images which members post within The Doll Forum, they discursively work to both reinforce and challenge current constructions of gender, sexuality, and relationships. By doing so, members of The Doll Forum use the space to normalize their sexual behaviour, as well as reinforce the performative nature of these constructions. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have to first and foremost thank my advisor, Dr. Elizabeth Comack, for all of her help throughout this project. Her extreme patience and guidance has been a true blessing, and while words do not quite seem enough to express my gratitude, I am extremely thankful for everything she has done.
