Materials needed: Brushes, Ink (bokuju), Suzuri, Paper for Calligraphy, Bunchin (paper weight) and Fudemaki (brush protecting tool) Bokuju and brushes can be purchased on the Amazon, Cheap Joe’s Art Store or Yasutoshi web site. (Check with your search engine such as Google by entering the bokuju, brushes, etc.)

Course Overview: Prerequisite knowledge and skills for enrolling in this course is Modern Japanese I or a course equivalent to it. The Japanese calligraphy (日本の書道) provides students with the correct order of strokes in writing, the foundation for appreciating calligraphic letters used for commercial purposes as well as subjects of fine arts practiced in today and in the past. This course will be offered during each spring semester with repeated contents.

Students will go through the following three-stage learning process. Stage 1: Basic strokes 一、二、三、大、本、日、永、その他 (kaisho style) 手本(model to follow)will be provided. Stage 2: Application of the basic 天、気、色、月、花、雲、その他 strokes 手本 will be provided. Stage 3: Writing favorite words 永遠、究極、友情、友達、改善、初心、勇気、解決、 (kaisho and gyosho or abstract 元気、無、その他 style) Individualized (for each student) 手本 will be provided.

Course Objectives: In this course, students will learn to: 1. demonstrate basic skills in writing strokes and Kanji words with a brush 2. paint reasonably good copies from a model 3. execute the two basic calligraphy styles: Kaisho and Gyosho 4. appreciate calligraphy as an art form and as a means of self-reflection

Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of the semester, students will demonstrate the ability to: 1. show basic brush writing skills in the forms of Kaisho and Gyosho 2. identify the differences among Kaisho and Gyosho 3. follow the correct stroke orders of Kanji 4. appreciate the calligraphy works executed by other calligraphy artists 5. execute the brush writing of Kanji words (Students’ works will be exhibited)

Requirements: 1. Submit each assignment on time. 2. Submit designated works for the mid-term and final evaluation. 3. Materials for writing practices must be supplied by students. 4. Because the use of ink or bokuju is required, each student must be extra careful not to spill it on the floor, desk, personal items. Bokuju is difficult to wipe clean.

Special Note: 1. You may tape my lectures and take notes for your study purposes only and not for making monetary profit. 2. Make sure you turn off your cellular phone. No headphone use is allowed during class sessions. 3. Academic Integrity/Academic Dishonesty: I expect students to be honest and not cheat on their assignments/quizzes/examinations. Unless otherwise instructed, each student should work independently on all assignments/quizzes/projects. Please read the University’s policies on student conduct, academic dishonesty, etc. 4. Students with Disabilities: Students in need of academic accommodations for a disability may consult with the office of Students with Disabilities Services to arrange appropriate accommodations. Students are required to give reasonable notice prior to requesting an accommodation. 5. University Emergency Policy: In the event of emergency, it may be necessary for USF to suspend normal operations. During this time, USF may opt to continue delivery of instruction through methods that include but are not limited to: Canvas, Skype, and email messaging and/or an alternative schedule. It’s the responsibility of the student to monitor Canvas site for each class for courses specific communication, and the main USF, College, and department websites, emails, and MoBull messages for important general information.

Grading Criteria: • Class attendance and active participation in class: 20% • Weekly assignments: 30% • Mid-term work submission:15% • Final work submission: 15% • Progress in calligraphy techniques (portfolio): 20%

Grades: Letter grades (A, B, C, D or F) will be given without + or - designations. A: 100-90 B: 89-80 C: 79-70 D: 69-60 F: 59-0
