Askew RESUMEN Se actualiza el conocimiento en España de las especies de calcídidos parasitoides (Hym., Chalcidoidea) asociadas a cinípidos de las tribus Aylacini y Diplolepidini (Hym., Cynipidae) que forman agallas en plantas herbáceas y arbustos de diferentes fa- milias botánicas, excepto Fagaceae. Se listan 56 especies de seis familias de calcídi- dos: 15 Eurytomidae, 13 Torymidae, 7 Ormyridae, 10 Pteromalidae, 6 Eupelmidae y 5 Eulophidae. De todas ellas se recogen las citas publicadas y, para muchas de ellas, se amplía su conocimiento aportando nuevos datos de distribución y biología. Cinco es- pecies se citan por primera vez de la península ibérica: Euryfoma aspila, E. infracta, E. rufipes, E. timaspidis y Toiymus cingulatus. Se discute la composición de la comu- nidad parasitoide asociada a agallas de especies de Aylacini y Diplolepidini en España comparándola con la de Cynipini sobre Quercus. Se aporta un apéndice final con la re- lación de agallas hospedadoras estudiadas incluyendo la lista de Chalcidoidea citados en cada una. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Japanese species of the genus Apophua Morley, 1913, are revised. Eleven species are found from Japan and two of them, A. elegans sp. nov. and A. yamato sp. nov., are newly described. Distribution data and an updated key to Japanese species are provided. Key words: Far East Asia, Glyptini, new species, parasitoid, taxonomy Introduction The genus Apophua Morley, 1913, is a medium-sized taxon of ichneumonid wasps of the tribe Glyptini, subfamily Banchinae, which contains 36 described species from the Afrotropical (13 spp.), Eastern Palaearctic (10), Oriental (10), Western Palaearctic (5), Nearctic (2), and Australasian (2) regions (Yu et al., 2012). The species in this genus are known as koinobiont endoparasitoids of lepidopteran larvae, particularly of leaf rollers (e.g. Tortricidae), and include some important natural enemies of forest pests (Kamijo, 1973; Momoi et al., 1975). We have studied the Japanese species of Apophua as part of a review of the Japanese Glyptini and have recognized 11 species. -

The genus Apechthis (Hym.:Ichneumonidae, Pimplinae) with two species, A. capuliferaand A. compunctor, is newly reported from Iran. Diagnostic morphological characters and geographical distribution of them are provided. The number of genera and species of the subfamily Pimplinae in Iran increased to 23 and 63 respectively. Key words: Apechthis, new record, distribution, taxonomy, Iran. The genus Apechthis Forster, 1869 (Hym.:Ichneumonidae, Pimplinae) is a relatively small genus with 17 described spe- cies (Yu et al. 2012, Watanabe & Takasuka 2013). Species of the genus Apechthis distributed in the Holarctic, Oriental and Neotropical regions (Gauld et al. 2002). They are biologically known as solitary primary idiobiont parasitoids and attack exposed pupae of a large number of macro and micro- Lepidoptera that some of them are important forest and ag- ricultural pests (Cole 1959, Bennett 2008, Yu, et al. 2012). The specialized and apically down-curved ovipositor of the fe- males is a very distinctive morphological character in the species of the genus Apechthis within the tribe Pimplini of the subfamily Pimplinae (Hym.: Ichneumonidae) (Cole 1959, Kasparyan 1973). Males of the genus have a completely yel- low face or at least yellow longitudinal eye orbits and linear tyloids on some flagellar segments (Kolarov 2004). -

Community level consequences of adaptive management through Climate Matching: oak galls as a model system Frazer H. Sinclair Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Edinburgh 2011 1 Declaration This thesis is submitted to the University of Edinburgh in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the College of Science and Engineering. Aspects of the presented work were made possible by collaboration and data sharing with individuals and institutions, details of which are presented below. Chapter 2. The French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) provided various phenotypic and genotypic data from oak provenance trials that are under their management. All presented analyses of these data are my own. Chapter 3. INRA allowed access to their established oak provenance trial at the forest of Petite Charnie in Sarthe, Northwest France. Insect surveys at the trial were conducted by me, and by volunteers under my supervision. All presented analyses of these data are my own. Chapter 4. Insect specimens were collected by me from the oak provenance trial at Petite Charnie with the permission of INRA. Approximately 1/3 of DNA extractions and PCR reactions were conducted by Konrad Lohse, Julja Ernst, and Juan Carlos Ruiz Guajardo. All presented analyses are my own. Chapter 5. Insect specimens were sourced from the Stone laboratory collections at the University of Edinburgh. Unpublished DNA sequence data from 6 parasitoid individuals were provided by Konrad Lohse. All presented analysis of this data is my own. Unless otherwise stated, the remaining work and content of this thesis are entirely my own. -

Abstract: The fauna of the subfamily Diplazontinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) in the north central parts of Iran was studied during 2010-2011. A total of 933 specimens were collected in 30 localities at different altitudes using Malaise traps. Sixteen species belonging to 7 genera were identified of which twelve species indicated by asterisk, are new records for Iran: Diplazon annulatus (Gravenhorst)*, Diplazon laetatorius (Fabricius), D. pectoratorius (Gravenhorst)*, D. tibiatorius (Thunberg)*, Enizemum ornatum (Gravenhorst), Homotropus nigritarsus (Gravenhorst)*, Homotropus pictus (Gravenhorst)*, Promethes sulcator (Gravenhorst), Sussaba flavipes (Lucas)*, Sussaba pulchella (Holmgren)*, Syrphoctonus tarsatorius (Panzer)*, Syrphophilus bizonarius (Gravenhorst)*, Tymmophorus obscuripes (Holmgren)*, Woldstedtius biguttatus (Gravenhorst), Woldstedtius citropectoralis (Schmiedeknecht)* and Xestopelta gracilima (Schmiedeknekht)*. Farfan 2010 Abstract The focus of this thesis is the ecology of invasive millipedes (Diplopoda) in the family Julidae. This particular group of millipedes are thought to be introduced into North America from Europe and are now widely found in many urban, anthropogenic habitats in the U.S. Why are these animals such effective colonizers and why do they seem to be mostly present in anthropogenic habitats? In a review of the literature addressing the role of millipedes in nutrient cycling, the interactions of millipedes and communities of fungi and bacteria are discussed. The presence of millipedes stimulates fungal growth while fungal hyphae and bacteria positively effect feeding intensity and nutrient assimilation efficiency in millipedes. Millipedes may also utilize enzymes from these organisms. In a continuation of the study of the ecology of the family Julidae, a comparative study was completed on mites associated with millipedes in the family Julidae in eastern North America and the United Kingdom. The goals of this study were: 1. To establish what mites are present on these millipedes in North America 2. To see if this fauna is the same as in Europe 3. To examine host association patterns looking specifically for host or habitat specificity. -
