With a some notable exceptions, most churches did not introduce organs into their sanctuaries until the latter part of the nineteenth century or later, and even then often after much debate. The Puritan and Calvinist theologies that undergirded early American Presbyterianism produced an environment which was often hostile toward the instrument. There have been many studies documenting the history and theologies of American Presbyterian parishes and denominations, and some general studies on the worship of those traditions. There have also been studies documenting the organ building industry in America and studies surveying the organ literature of the colonial and post-colonial eras. However, until now there has been no attempt to document how the organ was actually used within the context of American Presbyterian worship. The references addressing this question in the existing literature are anecdotal at best. The purpose of this document is to examine the use of the organ in American Presbyterian worship from the colonial period to the beginning of the twentieth century through a series of case studies. For background knowledge it draws upon sources discussing the nature of worship, music, and the church, especially from colonial Puritan, Enlightenment, and evangelical Presbyterian thinkers. The bulk of each chapter is devoted to outlining the documentable worship history of a particular parish, but each chapter has also been fitted (to the extent possible), with reconstructed orders of worship and either documented or fabricated thick descriptions of that parish as well as pictorial evidence. By examining the history of the organ in Presbyterian worship, this document will also shed light on the historical controversy over the organ in worship and the nature of current controversies over instruments in worship. viii INTRODUCTION 1.1. Background And Significance Of The Project This project represents a confluence of my two main research interests: the organ literature and Presbyterian liturgical history. The organ literature is a vast body of music, much of which was written for use in worship services of one type or another. As an organist, I am always seeking to understand the context of this literature -- how it was used in worship and the processes by which its composers sought to designate various organ works as “sacred” or “secular,” “liturgical” or “non-liturgical.” I am also intensely interested in the liturgical traditions of American Presbyterianism, of which I am both product and now a steward. In contrast with the Catholic liturgical traditions and early European Protestant traditions -- Lutheran, Calvinist, Zwinglian, Anglican, and Hussite -- American Protestant worship1 (which includes American Presbyterian worship) has been sparsely researched. It has been my abiding interest in these two fields, along with the realization that the latter has not been sufficiently addressed, which has led me to this study. The research will be significant because it will synthesize what we know from the fields of organ building, organ literature, and liturgical studies about American Presbyterian worship. 1 “American Protestant worship,” here means to specify the Sunday corporate worship of those Western church communities not in communion with the See of Rome since the time of the so-called “Protestant Reformation(s),” communities which are thus broadly called “Protestant.” The author fully recognizes the difficulty of that designation, but has not yet encountered a more appropriate taxonomy. That was Carter RatclifF’s early argument: “Her ‘appropriations’ are most efFective as expressions of her resentment at the fact that her name will never be as glamorous as Walker Evans’s.”² Now, of course, Levine owns an oeuvre and a proper name of her own, one that doesn’t just denote—as any proper name does—but connotes, carrying with it and standing for terms like appropriation and arguments such as Owens’s. She still leans heavily on other artists, but over the past decade or so, those who have written on her have turned to terms beyond appropriation and to other models to characterize the relationship she constructs with her sources, other ways to count names.

Under the skilled and persistent direction of Carrie Chapman Catt, and spurred by the energy of Alice Paul’s National Woman Party, the 19th Amendment won approval on August 26, 1920. In this pamphlet, we find reminders of the struggles and achievements of New York women who spoke, marched, and even fought for the vote and the full panoply of rights. These were women who marched to Albany in the winter, or demonstrators who were jailed for their protests in Washington. Crystal Eastman, a young activist, spoke a large truth when she said, after ratification, “Now we can begin.” To complete one task is to encounter the next. The Beginnings Kansas City Everything may have been up-to-date in Kansas City, Kansas, as Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote, but everythinghappened in Kansas City, Missouri, where Virgil Thomson, its most inimitable citizen, was born on 25 November 1896. He set the record straight in the first sentences of his spic and span autobiography (1966): "To anyone brought up there, as I was, 'Kansas City' always meant the Missouri one.... You did not speak of Kansas City, Kansas, often...or go there unless you had business." The truculence of these sentences was his benchmark to his dying day. Thomson's great romance with Missouri needs no apology. The state has never been a cultural desert; its historical and sociological history is of great importance in our political life. The journalist Horace Greeley, the editor William Allen White, the painter Thomas Hart Benton, and Harry Truman are among its glories. In fact, the entire Midwest is a bedrock of our cultural history whose native sons and daughters include T. S. Eliot, Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sherwood Anderson, Langston Hughes, Ernest Hemingway, Cole Porter, and Marianne Moore. Thomson was a prodigy: intellectually, verbally, musically, and literarily, and he voraciously apprehended the world around him. He must have been a difficult child to handle and was surely an oddball to his many friends. They admired him but were aware of the need to protect themselves from his boundless energy and perceptive ability to ferret out fuzzy conclusions and illogical thinking.

IT is impossible to understand the United States without a clear idea of its development from varied origins, the impact of fresh forces and the emergence of a new American civilisation as a result. If worship is the flower of a national culture we must keep in mind the nature of the soil as well as the changing scene and background. Let the approach to our survey be historical. I. Starting with the New England Puritans, we find the simple order of the old country transplanted. By the close of the 17th century, the following order of service had become general :—There was prayer " about a quarter of an houre," then a psalm " lined off " by a precentor, leading to an exposition of Scripture, the long prayer, the sermon, another psalm, and the Benediction. Brattle St. Church, Boston, dared to introduce Scripture reading without comment (" dumb-reading ") ; other con- gregations refused fellowship, but were relieved when even Brattle St. declined the legacy of an organ in 1713 ! For teaching elders, the number stayed the same. Learning about other faiths is something many Presbyterians see as important, and their responses to “quiz” questions about world religions suggest Presbyterians already know a fair amount. Fewer Presbyterians (though still majorities) regard interfaith bridge-building as a crucial task for the Presbyterian Church. Grace is a crucial tenet of Reformed Christianity, for most Presbyterians. Also considered important by many Presbyterians are: the sovereignty of God, ministers and elders lead the church together, stewardship, and priesthood of all believers. Most Presbyterians believe Jesus is central to salvation, but members and teaching elders disagree about how this works: The largest number of teaching elders believe that God selects certain people for salvation through Jesus, while the largest number of members believe people who commit themselves to Jesus thereby choose salvation themselves. More Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) teaching elders than members feel that God is involved in most aspects of their life and on a daily basis. Instrumental Music: Organs The English environment and the challenge presented by the possibility of introducing hymns with new tunes into the worship of the Church led to a concurrent agitation for the introduction of instrumental music to lead the singing. The Scottish tradition, particularly in the Free Church, was against any such innovation. A storm arose in England when in 1855 an organ was installed in St George's Church in Liverpool. An elder, Robert Long, raised the matter in the presbytery but the presbytery dismissed the complaint on the ground that since there was no synodical prohibition of organs no illegality had been committed; however, the presbytery advised that the organ should only be used to lead the singing, presumably by this advice excluding organ voluntaries.47 The issue could not be so lightly brushed aside; the absence of specific legislation prohibiting organs only indicated that the issue had never been raised and that the outlook of the Church had never envisaged the use of organs. Two months later, the presbytery returned to the matter and by eight votes to six decided to censure St George's congregation and to order the Church to be kept silent. 48 At the next meeting of the presbytery it was decided by fifteen votes to four not to forward to the synod an overture asking for a ruling forbidding the use of organs or any instrumental music in any English presbyterian church.49 Dr Stewart, who had objected to hymns, now also took up the campaign against organs and wrote to the Messenger complaining that the Liverpool decision was a virtual licence to every congregation to do what seemed right in its own eyes; if this licence, which was a mark of congregationalism, was allowed, there would be nothing to prevent the introduction of vestments.
