Rebuilding a Culture: Studies in Italian Music after Fascism, 1943-1953 Peter Roderick PhD Music Department of Music, University of York March 2010 Abstract The devastation enacted on the Italian nation by Mussolini’s ventennio and the Second World War had cultural as well as political effects. Combined with the fading careers of the leading generazione dell’ottanta composers (Alfredo Casella, Gian Francesco Malipiero and Ildebrando Pizzetti), it led to a historical moment of perceived crisis and artistic vulnerability within Italian contemporary music. Yet by 1953, dodecaphony had swept the artistic establishment, musical theatre was beginning a renaissance, Italian composers featured prominently at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse , Milan was a pioneering frontier for electronic composition, and contemporary music journals and concerts had become major cultural loci. What happened to effect these monumental stylistic and historical transitions? In addressing this question, this thesis provides a series of studies on music and the politics of musical culture in this ten-year period. It charts Italy’s musical journey from the cultural destruction of the post-war period to its role in the early fifties within the meteoric international rise of the avant-garde artist as institutionally and governmentally-endorsed superman. Integrating stylistic and aesthetic analysis within a historicist framework, its chapters deal with topics such as the collective memory of fascism, internationalism, anti- fascist reaction, the appropriation of serialist aesthetics, the nature of Italian modernism in the ‘aftermath’, the Italian realist/formalist debates, the contradictory politics of musical ‘commitment’, and the growth of a ‘new-music’ culture. In demonstrating how the conflict of the Second World War and its diverse aftermath precipitated a pluralistic and increasingly avant-garde musical society in Italy, this study offers new insights into the transition between pre- and post-war modernist aesthetics and brings musicological focus onto an important but little-studied era.

  • Giselle: the Most Dramatic and Beautiful Of
Media Release For immediate release Giselle: The most dramatic and beautiful of ballets is coming to Singapore Experience one of the world’s most loved ballets live on stage as it features some of ballet’s most dramatic scenes and other worldly images Singapore, February 20, 2017 – Base Entertainment, one of Southeast Asia’s leading presenters of live entertainment, is bringing Giselle, the greatest romantic ballet performed by the oldest theatre in the world, San Carlo Theatre of Naples and Ballet Company from Italy to The Mastercard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands. Giselle runs for a limited season from 26 April and tickets are now on sale. Wonderfully passionate, Giselle is a story of how the power of forgiveness and redemption can overcome the anguish of love and betrayal. The story unfolds against the ghostly backdrop of a forest haunted by Wilis vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. First staged in Paris in 1841, Giselle is one of the oldest ballets in the international repertory which is still enjoyed by audiences around the world. The music by French composer Adolphe Adam is one of the first full length ballet scores ever to be composed. This production of Giselle at The MasterCard Theatres is staged by multiple award-winning Italian dancer, Giuseppe Picone, who trained at the Ballet School of Teatro San Carlo in Naples itself and is now the appointed artistic director of Corp de Ballet of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. Picone said:“Italians are famous for their wonderful taste and I believe the scenery and costumes are truly wonderful.

  • Musica Che Si Fissa Af

A CEITICAL ESSAY ON THE ITALIAN PICTURES IN THE GALLERIES OF MUNICH—DRESDEN—BERLIN, BT GIOVANNI MORELLI, MEMBER OF THE ITAXIAX SEXATE. TRANSLATED FROM THE GERMAN BY MRS. LOUISE M. RICHTER. LONDON: G-EORGE BELL AND SONS, YOEE STEEET, COVENT GARDEN. 1883. CHISWICK PRESS :—C. WHITTINGHAM AND CO. TOOKS COURT, CHANCERY LANE. TVF GUTY CCr^IU PEEFACE. THE most important work on Italian painting, as re- gards both contents and compass, is incontestably " A New History of Painting in Italy, in three volumes, London, 1866," with the continnations, " A History of Painting in North Italy (1871), in two volumes, by J. A. Crowe and Gr. B. Cavalcaselle," and " Tiziano, la sua vita ed i suoi tempi, di G. B. Cavalcaselle e J. A. Crowe, in two volumes, 1877." These seven volumes are known throughout civilized Europe, and are the foundation of all study of Italian painting in England, Germany, and France. This work contains the results of the latest researches by specialists, and is compiled with the greatest industry and a most praiseworthy knowledge of existing records. It has, moreover, the advantage over other histories of Italian art, that it is the work not of one m.an alone, which is sure to make a book on art one-sided, but of two men of equal capacity, one belonging to the Teutonic race, the other to the Latin. The judgments and opinions laid down in the work have by that means acquired a solidity VI PKEFACE.
