  • Mark Needham
INSIDE TRACK PAUL TINGEN n his fifth decade as a top-level engineer, mixer and producer, Mark I Needham could be forgiven for being a bit of a traditionalist. Instead he’s an early adopter, who has eagerly embraced digital innovation. For example, he was not only one of the first to get Slate Digital’s Raven MTX touchscreen DAW controller, but he even asked the company to build him a custom dual-screen version. Acquiring the Dual Raven was the culmination of Needham’s gradual move from working in analogue to working entirely in the box, which began in 2004. He recalls: “As the sound of digital and of plug-ins got better and better, I had to ask myself: this UAD EQP1A plug-in sounds just as good as the two EQP1As I have in my rack, so why am I paying for maintenance on those and trying to do recalls on them? The maintenance of a large format console and outboard, and the AC to keep everything cool, is a big expense. “I initially got pushback from some labels because I was switching to in-the-box, but to me it seemed like everything was heading that way. I was fully in the box by 2010, because, with bands and labels expecting six or seven recalls, the instant recall capacity became paramount. For decades I used an SSL G console, and I can count on my hands the Secrets Of The Mix Engineers: amount of times a recall sounded exactly the same. Instead, it usually needed an Mark Needham hour and a half of re-patching, and then another hour of tweaking, to get everything Fleetwood Mac stalwarts Lindsey Buckingham sounding exactly the same as before.” Today Needham mixes about 400 songs and Christine McVie have enjoyed long musical a year, and frequently works on 10 projects in a single day — sessions that may contain careers — as has their engineer, mixer and 200-plus tracks with 10 plug-ins per track.

  • Paper Monitoring Ecological Changes Following Historic Waterfront Rehabilitation and Wetland Restoration at Saugus Iron Works NH
GWS2013 abstracts as of November 21, 2012 • Listed alphabetically by lead author / organizer Monitoring Ecological Changes Following Historic Waterfront Rehabilitation and Wetland Restoration at Saugus Iron Works NHS 5079 In 2008, Saugus Iron Works NHS (MA) completed a combined historic and ecological restoration. The project rehabilitated the culturally significant waterfront, recreated open-water in the historic turning basin, Paper and restored tidal mudflat and brackish wetlands along the Saugus River. The design included a comprehensive planning and environmental compliance strategy, and intensive pre- and post-restoration monitoring. Wetland vegetation, fish community, water quality, tidal regime, benthic invertebrates, and wildlife use will be monitored until 2018. The restored wetland is a low marsh-mud flat dominated by dwarf spikerush and frequented by foraging shorebirds. Fish transitioned from a freshwater to estuarine/brackish community dominated by killifish. Inundation by tidal estuarine water increased and water and sediment quality of the river improved. The restoration successfully removed invasive vegetation from the wetland and provided habitat for native wetland plants and shorebirds. The restoration and monitoring serve as a model for integrated historic and natural resource preservation. Value Project serves as a model for integrated historic and natural resource preservation. Outlines comprehensive proposition: planning and environmental compliance strategy involving multiple stakeholders. Keywords: Restoration, historical, wetland Lead author • session organizer • poster / demo / exhibit presenter: Marc Albert Integrated Resource Program Manager, Boston Harbor Islands NRA, Saugus National Park Service, Boston Harbor Islands NRA, Saugus Iron Works NHS, [email protected] Names of additional authors / panelists / presenters (if any): M.J. • Sonic Youth Biography
SONIC YOUTH The band is in nucleus formation: Thurston Moore - guitar, vocals Kim Gordon - bass, guitar, vocals Lee Ranaldo - guitar vocals Steve Shelley - drums Their new CD is called RATHER RIPPED Release date: June 13, 2006 1981/82/83 (Noise Fest, 1st mini-LP, Confusion Is Sex, Kill Yr Idols, Sonic Death): The group began in 1981 downtown New York City with this line-up: Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo and Richard Edson on drums. Ann Demarinis, keyboards, played early on for a very short bit and is documented on the first recorded appearance of the band on the Noise Fest cassette released by ZG Magazine in 1982. The Noise Fest was at a NYC art gallery where Thurston curated 9 days of experimental rock music. After Anne left, Lee joined. This is the band that made the 1st eponymously titled mini-LP released in 1982 by Neutral Records, a label founded by NYC guitar/composer Glen Branca. Richard then ran away to be a movie star. Lee and Thurston awoke in 1976/77 NYC to CBGB/Max’s firestorm: Television, Patti Smith, Suicide, Ramones, etc. - Kim was in L.A. studying as a visual artist living down the block from a young Darby Crash and Germs rehearsals. She came to NYC, met up with Thurston and they started playing during the era (1978/79) dubbed no wave. They joined forces with Lee. With cheap guitars tuned to various hot rodded tunings they wrote songs. Richard Edson left to be replaced by Bob Bert, and for an interim, Jim Sclavunos.
