A Book of the Body Politic: Connecting Biology, Politics and Social Theory Edited by Bruno Latour, Simon Schaffer, Pasquale Gagliardi San Giorgio Dialogue 2017 “Do you remember the Aesopian Fable of the Belly and the Members, or the letter of Paul to the Corinthians about the Body and the Church, or The Fable of the Bees by Mandeville, or the somewhat dangerous association of pests and foreigners, or the more recent attempts to think of the Earth as a giant organism? None of these stories stops shifting metaphors between one domain—that of the body—and another—that of politics. The result has been the creation of that most important concept of Western philosophy, corpus politicum, the Body Politic. One interesting aspect of this most famous topic is that every domain borrows from each other the certainty associated with the other’s authority, so that political science ends up borrowing from biology what biologists borrow from political theory. This constant commerce of concepts and metaphors, unfortunately, has never guaranteed the quality of what has been ceaselessly transported from one domain to another. The result is that we remain deprived of a coherent definition of collective bodies. Hence the idea of attempting to re-open the question in a Dialogue of San Giorgio by bringing the different domains together and examine what each has really to offer to the others that is genuinely proper to the phenomena it studies. Simon Schaffer 263 Of the Body of Politics and the Body of Nature Bruno Latour 285 Afterword: Politics - A Glimpse at Bodybuilding Biographies of Contributors 303 PREFACE Origin and context Bruno Latour, Simon Schaffer, Pasquale Gagliardi In the last two decades, it has become the good and generous custom of the Giorgio Cini Foundation to host regular meetings in Venice under the name of ‘Dialoghi di San Giorgio.’ These dialogues ingeniously and hospitably assemble participants from a range of different fields and with very different kinds of expe- rience and expertise to debate issues of pressing urgency in contemporary culture and society. One goal of the Dialoghi has therefore always been deliberately to form a productive collective by the careful assemblage of a set of selected individuals. It seemed apt to make this goal itself the focus of the 2017 meeting. No topic, of course, could be more challenging and more significant to the current crises of political order and of ecological catastrophe, both dominated in connected ways by the obvious weakness and indeed delusion of the terms in which political groups and natural systems are characterized. Hence arises the pressing need to create con- structive communities out of their components and at the same time to protect particulars and persons in a potent public polity. Plans and conversations for the Dialogo were developed by Bruno Latour, Pasquale Gagliardi and Simon Schaffer from the autumn of 2016, to define more precisely the political and scientific issues which must be addressed to make sense of how better to understand the relation between collective and individual agency across the wider range of knowledge. In turn, these plans were also focused on the selection of those who would be well-placed to reflect on how models of communi- ty and of agency have been used, and then revised, in specific sciences. Indeed, this was a key part of the shared initial intuition of the dialogue’s organizers: questions 2 B. LATOUR, S. SCHAFFER, AND P. GAGLIARDI such as the puzzle of those telling shifts between imagery of social collectives so often used in the explanatory techniques of biosciences, or the imagery of ani- mal communities relentlessly exploited in sciences of economy and society are not merely ubiquitous in the politics of knowledge, but very often explicitly recognized by the practitioners themselves. The wager of the Dialogo was thus to assemble a group of peculiarly careful and reflective practitioners of the natural and the social sciences, working with full awareness of this epoch’s dramatic challenges of the new climatic regime and the crises of political legitimacy, and to invite reflexion from them, individually and collectively, on better ways of dealing with such tricky, shifty and barely satisfactory images of order in life and in labor. The plan was straightforward: participants were each provided with a ‘Manifes- to’—see next section—setting out the challenges of political and natural imagery, and invited first to offer all the other members of the group one or two of their own writings that would provide a shared group of reference works for the conversation. Before the Dialogo itself, in September 2017, these participants also prepared their own brief statements, organised in a pairwise manner as conversations between the members of the collective. And during the three days of the meeting at San Giorgio most of the time was thus devoted to brief initial presentations by participants, followed by much lengthier exchanges between all members of the Dialogo. The focus on imagery in politics and the sciences, and on the forms of expertise which seem relevant to making sense of collective and of group action, proved a fascinat- ing and rebarbative theme. The results, and the process, are evident in the volume that follows. The ‘Manifesto’ The ‘Introductory Note’ (or the ‘Manifesto’) which was sent to all the experts in- vited to the 2017 Dialogue, was written by the planning team, composed of Bruno Latour, Simon Schaffer and Pasquale Gagliardi. It ran as follows: «Do you remember the Aesopian Fable of the Belly and the Members, or the letter of Paul to the Corinthians about the Body and the Church, or The Fable of the Bees by Mandeville, or the somewhat dangerous association of pests and foreigners, or the more recent attempts to think of the Earth as a giant organism? He made a goal to record every species of ant that could be found in Alabama—a childhood project that would eventually lead to his first scientific publication. By age 13, Wilson discovered a red, non-native ant in a local town in Alabama, and by the time he entered the University of Alabama, the fire ant had become a significant threat to the state’s agriculture.

Abstract: Research that connects the effects of urbanization on biodiversity and ecosystem services is lack- ing. Ants perform multifarious ecological functions that stabilize ecosystems and contribute to a number of ecosystem services. We studied responses of ant communities to urbanization in the Lake Tahoe basin by sam- pling sites along a gradient of urban land development. We sampled ant communities, measured vegetation characteristics, quantified human activities, and evaluated ant-community responses by grouping ants into service-providing units (SPUs), defined as a group of organisms and their populations that perform specific ecosystem services, to provide an understanding of urbanization impacts on biodiversity and their delivery of ecosystem services. Species richness and abundance peaked at intermediate levels of urban development, as did the richness of 3 types of ant SPUs (aerators, decomposers, and compilers). With increasing land development aerator and decomposer ants significantly declined in abundance, whereas compiler ants signif- icantly increased in abundance. Competing models demonstrated that precipitation was frequently among the strongest influences on ant community structure; however, urban development and human activities also had a strong, negative influence on ants, appearing in most models with ΔAICc < 2 for species richness and abundance patterns of SPUs and generalists. Response diversity was observed within SPUs, which suggests that the corresponding ecosystem services were maintained until development reached 30–40%.

Similarly, an indi- vidual is free to pursue his own ends if they are compatible with the greatest happiness of the greatest number and also is free not to act on behalf of the common good. While these boundaries are defined by law, the actual social relations within them are the concern of ethics or psy- chology, not legislation.' Thus, political theory as utilitarianism sees the law according to its own representation of the good and its own descrip- tion of human nature. This is the original coordination of individual soci- ety and the body politic in our tradition.

That is to say, the gradual extension of monetary transactions and individual property ownership and the disintegration of property- holding groups from feudal tenures created an early urban economic elite, and this class intensified its authority through techniques of gov- ernance and legal integration that were not tied to socially embedded customs and feudal arrangements (Bertelli 1978: 29; Dilcher 1967:7; Faini 2004). In the later twelfth and thirteenth centuries, in sum, it is possible to discern a broad set of transformative processes, which, in conjunction, at once disaggregated different spheres of social activity and diminished the local or personal embeddedness and the violent contestability of political power. Scientific Naturalism and the Agency of Things https://doi.org/10.1515/opphil-2018-0014 Received June 17, 2018; accepted July 31, 2018 Abstract: In this paper, I provide the outlines of an alternative metaphilosophical orientation for Continental philosophy, namely, a form of scientific naturalism that has proximate roots in the work of Bachelard and Althusser. I describe this orientation as an “alternative” insofar as it provides a framework for doing justice to some of the motivations behind the recent revival of metaphysics in Continental philosophy, in particular its ecological-ethical motivations. In the second section of the paper, I demonstrate how ecological-ethical issues motivate new metaphysicians like Bruno Latour, Jane Bennett, Timothy Morton, Ian Bogost, and Graham Harman to impute to objects real features of agency. I also try to show how their commitments lead to deep ambiguities in their metaphysical projects. In the final section, I outline a type of scientific naturalism in Continental philosophy that parallels the sort of naturalism championed by Quine, both conceptually and historically, and suggest that it might serve our ecological-ethical purposes better. France has an extremely rich philosophical tradition, and French thinkers have played a crucial role in the formulation and development of modern Western thought. In the 18th century, the century of the Enlightenment, all forms of culture and writing bear witness to an extraordinarily fertile period, when human knowledge, reason, society and politics are all rethought in the light of authority being vested in humanity itself. Later 19th century thinkers develop this in the direction of founding scientific studies of society and humanity's place within it. In the 20th century, existentialism, structuralism, post-structuralism and post-modernism have been internationally influential on the development of contemporary thought. The aim of this course is to offer an introduction to this body of literature, and to enable you to make connections across theories of culture, and theories of politics and society, as well as gaining an insight into some of the key philosophical questions: how do we live, what do we live for, how do we justify our values, how do we argue for change?
