REFLECTIONS FOR EUCHARISTIC ADORATION GOD'S LOVE AND HIS WILL: THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT

Honor Your Father and Mother

The full Commandment reads: Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you. Ex 20:12; Deut 5:16.

The Catechism teaches us that this Commandment and all that follow have at their root in what Jesus taught is the second greatest commandment "You shall love your neighbor as yourself". Mt 22:34-40. It is God's loving plan, His will, that we honor family, and societal relationships.

The Catechism reminds us that: "The Lord Jesus himself recalled the force of this commandment of God'", Catechism 2196

PRACTICE: Consider Jesus' words about this Commandment: He responded, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines hu- man precepts.’ You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” He went on to say, “How well you have set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Whoever curses father or mother shall die.’ Yet , ‘If a per- son says to father or mother, “Any support you might have had from me is qorban”’ (meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things.” Mark 7:6-13.

Society tells us it is impossible to maintain a lifelong commitment to family. Society tells us we should pursue our own needs and wants for our own fulfillment even at the cost of losing our families. "I love you but I can't be with you" is a popular theme in entertainment and social media. Reflect on the above passage. Jesus clearly reminds us THREE TIMES to follow God's ways, not the way of society.

Familiarize yourself with the full Catechism text about this Commandment. Then, reflect on your own life. Do you "disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition"?

Jesus teaches that this Commandment is important to God. The Commandment itself teaches that it is essential for true life. Pray for the courage to follow it and help others to do so as well.

...following exactly the way that the LORD, your God, commanded you that you may live and prosper, and may have long life in the land which you are to possess. Deuteronomy 5:33.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday 9:00am to 9:00pm in the Chapel of Adoration
