The Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes was a World’s Fair held in Paris in 1925 which launched the Art Deco movement. A separate Pavilion at the Fair housed the up-and-coming designers, all under 35. A young 26 year old Jean Fouquet from Tours, France made his début here and impressively won an award at his first Exposition. Another of these emerging artists was Raymond Templier who went on to become a famed Art Moderne Parisian jeweler. 540 detail

These young talented designers wanted to break from the glamorous and excessively bejeweled designs that were the rage of the 1920’s. They wanted spare and minimalist, sleek lines reflective of the machine age. Geometric shapes fashioned from onyx, silver, gold and semiprecious stones with minimal use of precious gems were the preferred choices. A new movement was ready to launch.

In May 1929 of Union des Artistes Modernes was founded by an influential group of Modernist decorative artists and architects who were disillusioned with the conservative Societé des Artistes Décorateurs (SAD) from which they split. They were rising stars in this emerging movement. Jean Fouquet was among the founding members together with Gérard Sandoz and Raymond Templier. Their mission to abandon the past traditions and designs was reflected in the industrial age inspired abstract geometric lines where the focus was on the design. The Art Moderne movement was born.

Third generation of the House of Fouquet, Jean Fouquet (1899-1984) designed jewelry only from 1925 to 1939. As one of the cutting edge Artist-Jewelers that ushered in the Art Moderne movement, Jean Fouquet’s pieces were decisively modern. His masterful designs reflected an incorporation of shapes and angles juxtaposed in creative interpretations.

Jean Fouquet’s pieces are scarce and rarely come onto the market.
