PRE-TREATMENT BATHS

Order No. 9499 | JE802 Etching salt, 1 kg JE802 is ideal for neutralizing after alkaline pretreatment and activating steel, copper, copper alloys and passive nickel layers. The activation with the decapping JE802 replaces the acid dip- ping on the basis of sulfuric or hydrochloric acid.

Order No. 356 | JE610 Electrolytic Degreasing, 1 kg The degreasing salt is a cyanide-free, anodic degreaser for gal- vanic degreasing of all conventional metallic objects. Bath approach: Mix 6O - 90 g degreasing salt in 1 liter demineralized water.

Order No. 531 | JE610 Electrolytic Degreasing, 100 g Bath approach: 7,50 € 15,60 € 8,10 € Mix 6O - 90 g degreasing salt in 1 liter demineralized water

ELECTROLYTIC DEGREASING

The electroly degreasing is the first galvanic step. Its task is to free the goods before they are galvanized from the last fatty residues (e.g. finger sweat). As a result, the adhesive strength of the metal to be applied is signifi- cantly improved.

The product to be electroplated is degreased well if the surface is completely wetted.

Degreasing agents are mainly supplied in salt form. Cyanide-containing degreasing agents, which are also commercially available, should be foregone in principle. During degreasing, hydrogen is released on the workpiece; The gas breaks down dirt and grease, which are then absorbed by the solution.

As a rule, dissolve 60-80 g degreasing salt per liter bath in hot tap water. With frequent use the bath should be renewed week- ly. Depending on the degree of pollution, the degreasing baths should be changed regularly.

Since degreasing can cause severe salt deposits, the cathode and anode rods should be checked for good contact from time to time and, if necessary, cleaned. Make sure that the amperemeter does not reach a full deflection during degreasing; Reduce voltage if necessary. Hollow goods should be distilled for some time before degreasing. This prevents carryover of the galva- nic baths.

13 ELECTROLYTIC DEGREASING - IMPORTANT After degreasing, rinse the goods in clean water! Do not forget to reset the voltage to zero.

DEGREASE FAILURE LIST TARNISH FILM: Arises due to too long degreasing. The layer must be removed by .

NO REACTION IN THE BATH (NO BUBBLES): Check contacts (see above), set voltage to 8 V.

WORK INSTRUCTIONS DEGREASING: Anode material: Stainless steel (V2A) Voltage: 6 - 8 volts Bath temperature: Room temperature Time: Approximately 30 - 180 sec. Goods movement: Not required

PICKLING: The task of pickling is to neutralize degreasing residues on hollow bodies or goods that are difficult to rinse. In addi- tion, passive layers on which a metal layer does not adhere are activated. This is especially true when coating nickel. To pickle, dip the product into a solution consisting of 900 ml of tap water and approx. 100 ml of sulfuric acid. Instead of the sulfuric acid, a pickling salt can be used. Always change the pickling together with the degreaser. After degreasing it should always be well rinsed, pickled and rinsed well again.

IMPORTANT: Do not forget to rinse after pickling!

Order No. 359 | JE Ultra 25 Ultrasonic Cleaner, 1.0 kg ULTRA -25 is an universal ultrasonic powder cleaner especial for precious , and copper. Bath approach: for 1 liter ready to use bath, 30-50 g ultrasonic cleaning salt JE Ultra 25 are required.

Order No. 2022 | JE811 Ultrasonic Cleaner, 1.0 kg Rapid JE811 is a highly alkaline ultrasonic cleaner powder for steel and gold. Bath approach: for 1 liter ready to use bath, 30-50 g ultrasonic cleaning salt Rapid JE811 are required.

ULTRASONIC CLEANING

The workpieces to be galvanized must be cleaned of dirt that has settled on worn pieces (skin particles, cosmetic residues, dust, oxides) and of adhering polishing pastes. The method of ultrasonic cleaning has prevailed.

You need a powerful ultrasonic cleaner with built-in heater.

Ultrasonic cleaning salts and solutions are offered for every specific need. The concentration of the usual means is about 3 to 8%. The timely change of solutions in case of pollution is a matter of course.

The cleaning effect is at an elevated bath temperature (about 60 - 80 ° C) best. The typical sounding time is 2 min. Workpi- eces with a persistent layer of dirt should be soaked in the ultrasonic bath or a long time without sonication and thereu- pon briefly sonicated. Excessive exposure to ultrasound can cause fine hairline cracks on the fabric. Single milk stains: Occur due to too long sonication in plastic baskets with braid. Oxidation: Due to wrong ultrasonic cleaning agents.

14 ELECTROPLATING: There are basically two different types of plating baths: The acidic baths (e.g. rhodium and nickel baths, as well as certain gold plating baths) and the cyanidic baths (e.g. gold-plating and silver baths). Make sure to pay attention to the information provided by the manufacturer, because the different bath types have different characteristics. As a measure of the thickness of a support layer we use the unit> micron <(μm): 1 μm is 1/1000 mm. In addition, the unit> Millieme

WHAT YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO:

Use the suitable anodes for the electrolyte (at least 2 pieces per bath) as well as the appropriate electrolytes for the particular usage (bath chemicals).

Keeping the device and baths clean contributes significantly to a good result. Always ensure good electrical contact of the goods and anode rods and the goods suspension.

For example, the anode holders always have to be firmly clamped on the anode rods and the support points of the pro- duct racks need to be leaned from time to time.

PRECIOUS METAL BATHS:

Attention: All noble metal baths must be prepared or filled with distilled / deionized water.

After the galvanic application of a noble metal layer, the galvanized product is immersed in a stationary rinse in order to rinse off and collect the residues of the noble metal bath adhering to the goods. The precious metal-contai- ning solution hat you receive is called a „static rinse“. We recommend the use of a water circulation system to pre- vent carryover.

You can use the filtered (!) static rinse to fill the precious metal bath. If you do not filter, contaminants can en- ter the bath.To avoid sources of error, we advise against filling. It is better to separate the savings sink together with the spent precious metal bath.

Even if a precious metal can no longer be applied to a bath, it still contains a considerable amount of noble metal. A recovery of this share is worthwhile in any case. For details, see the section „Recovery“.

15 Order No. 9204 | JE88 BATHS Rhodium Concentrate, 2 g Rh,100 ml JE88 ensures ultra brilliant white, non-abrasive, glossy surfaces with L * values between 90.5 and 91 layer thicknesses up to 1.5 microns. JE88 also protects silver products against tarnishing. Bath approach: mix 100 ml JE88 with 900 ml demineralized water.

Order No. 9622 | JE23-1 Black Rhodium Concentr., 2 g Rh, 100 ml JE 23-1 produces dark, anthracite gray and resistant rhodium layers. The layers are very decorative and abrasion resistant. Bath approach: mix 100 ml JE23-1 with 900 ml demineralized water.

Order No. 8822 | JE88 GO! Rhodium Bath, 2 g Rh, 1.0 L Ready to use bath Order No. 9621 | JE23-1 Daily updated Black Rhodium Bath, 2 g Rh, 1.0 L price here: Ready to use bath shop.jentner.de/en

RHODIUM PLATING: For decorative purposes, rhodium offers its corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance and its bright white color. Especially white gold jewelry is rhodium plated. Rhodium layers also serve as tarnish protection for silver- ware. Rhodium baths are supplied ready to use or as a concentrate. To obtain a bath solution from the concentrate, fill 100 ml rhodium concentrate (corresponding to 2 g rhodium) with dist. Water up to 1 liter.

IMPORTANT: The rhodium bath is a very sensitive bath in electroplating. The oods must be pretreated very carefully; In addition, you should pay attention to the meticulous cleanliness of bath and goods. Only clean the platinum-titanium or mixed oxide anodes in dist. water or in the degreasing. Do not brush or polish, otherwise the platinum layer will be damaged. Damaged anodes are no longer functional. For large parts, or in braided bands (Milanaisse) at the beginning of rhodium plating the voltage should be incre- ased very shortly on the max. power (current). Never plate with rhodium longer than max. 15 minutes. A good rhodium plating is usually already after 2 min. reached. As a rule, 400-600 rings can be treated per liter of bath, for example.

WORK INSTRUCTIONS: Anode material: Plated titanium Voltage: 2-3.5 volts Bath temperature: Room temperature Time: Approximately 2 min Goods movement: Required

RHODIUM PLATING FAILURE LIST: CHAINS / ARE ONLY PARTIALLY RHODIUM-PLATED: The rhodium bath is a poor conductor of electricity and it is only rhodium-plated here there is direct metallic contact. There- fore, clamp the chain or firmly on a rack. It is not sufficient to put the jewelry chain or necklace loosely over the hooks.

UNRHODINATED SMALL POINTS ON POLISHED SURFACES: Rhodium plating forms small hydrogen bubbles on the surface of the product, which can prevent deposition of rhodium. These bubbles must be avoided at all costs.

GRAY RHODIUM PLATING: The rhodium bath is dirty.

RHODIUM LAYER IS NOT ADHESIVE: You have plated with rhodium too long (rhodium plating time is about 10-15 min.) The goods were not sufficiently degreased.

FOR SMALL PARTS (EAR STUDS) MATTE DARK RHODIUM PLATING DESPITE LOW VOLTAGE: Rhodium plating of small parts can cause tensions, burns of precipitation. n the case of small parts, it is therefore advisable to place a cover of copper wire around the part in order to further reduce the tension that can affect the part.

BLACK RHODIUM:Extremely decorative, dark anthracite gray precipitation. The deposition takes place at room temperature.

17 SILVER ELECTROLYTES

Order No. 10315.1 | JE60 Cyanide Free Silver Bath, 32 g Ag, 1.0 L Ready to use bath

Order No. 9899 | JE37 Matt Silver Bath, 36 g Ag, 1.0 L The matt silver bath JE37 is ideal for the deposition of white fine silver layers. It doesn´t build up further gloss. The silver electrolyte has an excellent throwing power and is perfect to plate silver decoratively and technically. The fine silver content is 36 g per liter. Ready to use bath

Order No. 6625 | JE36 Bright Silver Bath, 36 g Ag, 1.0 L The bright silver bath JE36 guarantees an exceptionally glossy, whitefine silver deposition and is ideal for silver applications in decorative and technical fields. The fine silver content is 36 g per liter. Ready to use bath

SILVER The costume jewelry mainly uses glossy silver baths, which give a white fine silver recipitate. The most important field of application is the high-gloss silvering f pieces of jewelry (after repairs) and of started stock. Silver plating is more advantageous in the latter case than treatment with conventional deoxidizing agents (e.g. Renoverin).

IMPORTANT: Before immersing the goods, the tension should be adjusted in advance. After dipping the goods readjust voltage drop. In 2 minutes usually forms an approximately 1 micron thick silver layer. If you do not use a glossy silver bath for a long time, it is recommended to remove the anodes from the bath.

SILVER FAILURE LIST

PRECIPITATION HAS NO LIABILITY: The goods were hung without activated rectifier in the bath. This leads to a non-adhesive electroless silver plating. Onto this layer galvanic silver plating does not hold. Excessive dipping in deoxidizers results in a layer on which a galvanic layer is poorly adhered. The goods should be polished before electroplating.

MATT AND SPOTTY GOODS: You tried to silver tarnish-protected goods. Tarnish-protected silver is difficult to galvanically post-treat (re- sult: dull and stained goods). The tarnish protection can be removed by previous immersion in hydrochloric acid.

MATTER PRECIPITATION: Check brightener. Voltage may be too high. The bath has only a limited service life, which can be extended by adding potassium cyanide (about 20g per liter). If you still do not get a shiny precipitation, give the bath to regeneration. Bath temperature too high (over 30 ° C)

GOLD PLATING: There are two types of gilding: Gold plating and color gilding. While gold plating can be applied with thicker gold layers (up to approx. 10 μm), the color gilding provides only a thin layer of gold (0.1 - 0.2 μm max.). Starting with gold plating: The baths used here produce a rich, strong yellow precipitate, hose fineness is usually 22-23 carats. The high gold content guarantees complete tarnish resistance.

If you have parts made of stainless steel for processing, we recommend a pretreatment adhesive gold plating bath. On this bath we give you on request more nformation. For larger amounts of bath (from 10 liters) a regeneration of the electrolyte is possible.

MILLIÈME: In case of gold plating - to characterize the gold plating - often not the layer thickness (in microns = microns) is given, but the weight of the support per kg of goods. This information is called „Millieme“: 1 millieme = 1/1000 = 1 g fine gold per 1 kg finished goods 10/000 => American Double < 25/000 => Charnier < 50/000 => Union <

PRECIOUS METAL CONSUMPTION: You can see the deposition in mg / amine from the respective product data sheet f your supplier. By multiplying the Ampere value (display on the galvanizer) with the deposition time, you can calculate the precious metal consumption.

The parts to be treated must be degreased, rinsed and dried before treatment. Voltage adjustment of the rectifier according to the manufacturer‘s instructions. Dip the fiber tip of the plating pen for about 1-2 min. into the corresponding oble metal bath, so that the tip can be soaked with the electrolyte. Fix the piece of jewelry with tweezers / clamp (to establish contact). Then, with the electroplating pen, stroke the surface to be electroplated several times without pressure. Rinse the piece of jewelry again in deionized water and dry it.

CAUTION: The galvanizing pen should be thoroughly rinsed out with running tap water before each use in order to eliminate any residues in- side. The fiber pins have to be renewed regularly.

CAUTION: Various bath-manufacturers use welded aluminum caps on the bath bottles for transport. These must be completely removed.

NICKELPLATING: Non-ferrous metals (e.g. copper, brass, etc.) may or should be nickel plated before precious metals are applied. The ni- ckel interlayer prevents noble metal atoms from diffusing into the non-ferrous metal layer. The intermediate layer acts as a „barrier“.

An advantage of the bright nickel bath is that a strong glossy coating is applied. This property of the intermediate layer is also transferred to the underlying noble metal layer.

Keep in mind that the hallmarking laws of some countries prohibit nickel underplating: in such countries - such as in Switzerland - nickel interlayers may not be applied. In about 2 min. a nickel layer is deposited with 1 micron layer thickness; this is sufficient for a normal nickel plating.

IMPORTANT: Continue refining nickel-plated parts quickly, otherwise the nickel layer will become passive and the following layer will no longer adhere. After nickel-plating, we recommend degreasing again, rinsing, pickling and rinsing again. Contaminated baths can be filtered through laboratory filters (pleated filters, white).

FAILURE LIST: Brilliant nickel baths contain organic brighteners, which are prepared over time and therefore have to be supplemented by the addition of a special brightener.

For stainless steel special adhesive nickel baths must be used. On request, please contact us for further information. Chromed parts can not be nickel plated. Remove the chrome layer before nickel plating by immersing the part in concentrated hydrochloric acid until bubbling ceases.

We recommend the Jentner deoxidizer OXI-EX JE709. It cleans quickly and thoroughly tarnished silver- ware. OXI-EX is an aqueous-based deoxidizer used to remove sulfide and oxide films on silver and gold.

PROTECTING OF SILVERWARE: Anti-tarnish baths are offered as chemical or electrolytic dip baths. An immersion treatment forms an effective passive film on the silver surface, which prevents tarnishing. The extremely thin protective film is formed by a chemical reaction with the silver surface. The passive layer is not resistant to abrasion.

24 Further technical information on the working conditions of the baths can be found in the chart on page 27 OXIDIZE: For the oxidation (blackening) of silver, silver alloys and copper, ready-to-use solutions can be obtained. These agents create by dipping or by applying with the brush a firmly adhering thin blue-black color. The color thus obtained can be shaded in a known manner by brushing or buffing in each tint. Black oxide staining does not alter the gloss of the metal surface to be stained. The parts must be degreased before oxidation. Use glass or plastic tubs for oxidation.

ATTENTION: The storage containers must be stored protected from light, otherwise the solutions will decompose. After staining, rinse the product well in running water and then dry.

Order No. 371 | JE622 Decoction AgentJE622, 1.0 kg For boiling soldered parts. Boiling with JE 622 free you from unavoidable dangerous work with sulfuric acid. JE622 can easily be rinsed off and the solution must not be brought to the boil. Bath approach: To get 1 liter, mix 150-200 g JE622 with 1 liter hot demineralised water.

Order No. 364 | JE600 Black Oxide JE600, 1.0 L JE600 produces a blue-black coloration on silver, silver alloys and copper. Pumicing or polishing/buffing a shading of any desired tint can be achieved. CHEMICAL TARNISH: The parts are after degreasing about 3-5 min. suspended in a protective solution, which can be obtai- ned as a ready-to-use solution or in concentrate form. After the contactor (chemical or electrolytic), it must be rinsed very well, as a bad rinse results in a yellowish precipitate. It is essential to ensure that the tarnish protection bath is not dragged into other galvanic baths, as they would become unusable very quickly. The chemical tarnish protection is especially suitable for silver jewelry in displays and showcases.

Decoction Agent JE622: The decoction procedure with our decoction agent avoids the annoying and dangerous use of sulphuric acid. Advantages; - no holes in clothes - less copper in the waste water - easier rinsing Bath Preparation: - solution must not boil 175-200 g per litre (tap water) - fewer problems with hollow ware Temperature: 60-80° C

If the effect of the solution decreases, it can be regenerated by adding further decoction agent. The solution is also an excellent aid to remove rest of the plaster.

Black Oxide JE600: produces a blue to black colouring on silver, silver alloys and copper. The colouring can be shaded in every desired tone by pumicing of wobbling. Colouring with black oxide does not change the brightness of the metal surface to be coloured (thin layers). Delivery form: Ready to use solution Working conditions: The degreased piece is blackened by dipping into the black oxide or by applying the black oxide with a paintbrush. After the colouring procedure rinse the goods thoroughly under current water and dry them subsequently. According to the application the black oxide can be thinned up to 10 times. It is recommended to varnish the coloured goods with clear varnish to receive a lasting layer.

Further technical information on the working conditions of the baths can be found in the chart on page 27 25 Rhodium Recycling Powder JE632 The rhodium recycling powder JE632 has been developed for the recovering of rhodium partic- les from used electroplating baths and from rinsing water. Procedure 1. pH- Stabilization (pH 6-8) through small portions of sodium hydroxide (stirring carefully) 2. Add the rhodium recycling powder JE632 - 5 grams per each liter – and stir constantly (approx. 10 min.) 3. The chemical reaction begins - the rhodium particles join and the liquid becomes clearer. 4. Filtration of the treated solution through pleated filter 5. After the compound dry completely send it to us in the pleated filter. We will analyse it. This material is no longer a hazardous good. You will get the information about the rhodium content after the analysis. You can choose then between selling the recycled rhodium to us or getting a new bath.

AFTERCARE: DESICCATION: For post-treatment, we recommend a warm air-dry centrifuge. It ensures a rational, stain-free drying of water-wet goods. It should be kept in mind that the centrifuge must have a fast-acting as well as a thermostatically adjustable lid heater. This ensures perfect spotless drying, even with hollow goods (which were placed in distilled water before degreasing). For highly polished jewelry special inserts (with pockets) are offered.Alternatively, hot air dryers for rack goods or for larger quantities of hollow goods (Galvano forming) and vacuum dryers can be used.

SPECIAL PROCEDURES: In order to be able to galvanize parts made of plastic, wood, etc., they must be made conductive. Use a silver conduc- tive paint to achieve that.

The parts must be cleaned of coarse dirt first and then fixed with a copper wire. The wire serves as a contact during galvanization. The silver conductive paint is applied with a brush. Make sure that the part is completely (gapless) brushed. After a drying time of approx. 30 min. the part can be galvanized. Without degreasing the part is hung di- rectly in a copper or in a silver bath. The minimum processing time is 45-60 min. A longer treatment is advantageous. Thereafter, further galvanic proces- ses (gold, nickel / rhodium) can be carried out.

GEMSTONES IN ELECTROPLATING: All (amorphous) soft stones under hardness 7 are endangered in galvanic baths, e.g. Turquoise, , . These stones should be unfolded or covered (covering varnish).

WHAT YOU TOO SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO:

PEARLS: Upper layer is attacked by acidic baths (decapping bath), rhodium, etc. : Beware of high heat and ultrasound. By inclusions in the emerald, the stone can get fissures by ultrasound. AND : May become gray or dull during pre-treatment or during electroplating. MARKASITE (ORE:) Caution: This stone may become plated with a layer of metal during plating because of the metals the stone contains.

Stones that have become dull due to electroplating can possibly be conditionallyrestored by regreasing or oiling (sili- cone oil, vaseline oil, etc.).
