GRANDE PRAIRIE JUNIOR COLLEGE'S DEAN ANDERSON DEAN'S MESSAGE

The stated objective of the College is to develop as a regional post-secondary institution with a variety of educational programs designed for students with differing aspirations, interests, and background preparation. The past aca demic year saw business education programs and an expanded set of courses in adult occupational training added to the offerings of the College, as an extension to the University and matriculation programs which had been estab lished. The result of these additions was reflected in a broader cross section of students, and a greater diversity of interests to provide for in student life.

The range and the complexity of demands on students, and the difficulty in providing the necessary facilities and spaces, produced problems for the student body, and the student government. A continuing problem, while our programs are scattered in different sections of the city, will be to provide a common identity for all students as members of the same institution. I have been very pleased with the co-operation and good will which characterized the response of the students to the limitations which were imposed on us in the past year, which was a critical period in our development. A new and permanent campus plan is now underway. The past year at the College produced a series of events, impressions, and recollections. While many activities were common to students, your individual assessments of the worth of these experiences will vary widely.

One measure of the value of the past year will be t he growth in knowledge and skills gained through the program of studies you selected. But the total contribution of the past year to your educational and personal development may take some t ime to place in perspective. If reflection on this past year causes you to recall persons, ideas, and events which made a positive and permanent difference for you, the year will have been useful and worthwhile indeed.

Sincerely, Mrs. W. Evaskevich

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

GLENN KIRKLAND

Fellow Students:

Serving in the office of President for this college year has been a very profit able experience for me. It certainly hasn't been easy, but in the end all those little difficulties are turned into fond memories. I know that we in the Students' Council have not been very active this year, but we did our best by you, the student body, and hope we have made your life more interesting. I hope that you will look back on both the follies and the fun with good humour. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those students, and all those professors, who contributed to the student life this year. Life on this small cam pus has been enjoyable and profitable for all of us. Now we must move on to wider horizons. Then we can say with a certain pride that we are from the Grande Prairie Junior College; there we know we will do well because of our college. And so may I say farewell for now, with the best of wishes for success. HAROLD MOORE LILLIAN MARCOTTE

VALEDICTORIAN'S SPEECH

Distinguished guests, parents, and students: There are now less than four weeks until a phase of our lives will have come to a close. To most of us these past seven months have been a great strain and we are looking foreward with great relief to a diverting summer, although the most trying hours are still to be experienced. However now that we have succeeded in weathering the onslaught of new ideas presented to us and the expectations made of us, we realize the pending of its finale with great relief inter mixed with regret. Regret because we will no longer have the same associations, the same interests and the same gossip to exchange with our newly found acquaintances unless they have become intimate friends. Regret also because we have become secure in our smooth schedules that were evolved from the shambles of the first few days at this college. Now we are forced to live through this confusion again in our drive to secure our separate goals. Most of us will have not perhaps have learned precise, displayable skills nor remember intricate details relating to the courses in which we have been participating. However all that we have been told, all that we have seen, and all that we have read had one total consequence, the moulding of our personalities. We are not the same individuals as those who entered this institution. The first year at any university or college however small, is a process of awaken ing, the intercourse of ideas and intellect. We have been exposed to the problems and the wonders in human civilization of which we were formerly unaware. This has broadened our viewpoints and prepared us for the experience ahead of us. This is the third year for the operation of the college. Unfortunately classes are still being interrupted by banging on the main floor, creaking stairs and spasmic hilarity in the students lounge. Students and faculty are still rushing from the college to the high school, and back to the junior high schools. The college still maintains its steady pace however. This year two new institutions have been affiliated with the college. As this is truly the graduation of the business college students and some of the vocational preparatory students - I on behalf, of the remaining student body wish them happiness and good fortune in their forthcoming careers. I believe that all my fellow students as well as myself are proud and thankful to have attended the Grande Prairie Junior College. Its smallness has enabled students to enjoy the opportunity of having a more personal interaction with fellow students and professors. This cannot help but assist them in their struggle to succeed. The students of Grande Prairie Junior College thank those who have made this college a reality as well as the faculty, library staff, and counselling service who are continuing to administer its functions and its aims. We will also remember with appreciation the competency of the students ' council who pro vided us with many relaxing diversions. Finally we pay tribute to all our parents whose efforts and sacrifices have enabled us to have participated in this college year. I wish to you my fellow students, the best that life can offer in the pursuit of a satisfying goal and that this year will always hold fond memories. And perhaps you may not attain the heights you desire, I leave you Cicero's wise consellation:

"If you aspire to the highest place, it is no disgrace to stop at the second or even the third. "

Sincerely, Eleanor Scorgie GUEST SPEAKER-MR. W.O. MITCHELL
