Welcome from the President ELCOME TO THE 29TH ANNUAL Great Taste of the Midwest. At a time when we probably should be over- whelmed by the explosive growth of the craft beer industry, we are too busy trying to figure Wout how to make this event a better experience for all. To that end, we are excited that we have maintained the same foot- print as we’ve had in past years, but have added more brewer space, by moving our merch tents and adding a few new tents to a previously restricted staff only area of the park (inside the “loop road”). This allows us bring in some new brewers while continuing to bring back the brewers that you come to expect to see at the Great Taste of the Midwest. I would like to thank Great Taste Chairman, Mark Garthwaite and the multitude of volunteers that make this event happen. We are all very proud that this is the only event of this size that is run by a 100% volunteer effort. Their passion for beer is a large part of what makes a volunteer effort of this size a success. I would also like to thank all of the Brewers that come to the Great Taste of the Midwest. All of “our” passion for beer flows from their passion. As the event has grown and produced more return Brewers each year, we’ve come to think of the Brewers as family coming home every year on the second Saturday in August. Sadly, I have to acknowledge the passing of several MHTG members since the last Great Taste.

The theatre was run by Greg Klimkiw (later Guy Maddin’s original producer) whom I knew from our in-print rivalry as film reviewers for the two University student newspapers – Greg for the University of Manitoba’s Man- itoban, and me for the University of Winnipeg’s Uniter. Although we had occasionally tossed barbs at each other, there was no actual animosity and when Greg took over the Festival, he handed me a “free lifetime pass”. The initial booking for Eraserhead was just for a weekend. Having read something about it in the previous year or two, I was eager to see it and went with a friend to the first showing. I was hooked from the opening image, found myself sucked into a remarkably dense, sustained imaginary world every detail of which fascinated me.

“That Show You Like Might Be Coming Back in Style” 44 DOI: 10.1515/abcsj-2015-0003 “That Show You Like Might Be Coming Back in Style”: How Twin Peaks Changed the Face of Contemporary Television RALUCA MOLDOVAN Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca Abstract The present study revisits one of American television’s most famous and influential shows, Twin Peaks, which ran on ABC between 1990 and 1991. Its unique visual style, its haunting music, the idiosyncratic characters and the mix of mythical and supernatural elements made it the most talked-about TV series of the 1990s and generated numerous parodies and imitations. Twin Peaks was the brainchild of America’s probably least mainstream director, David Lynch, and Mark Frost, who was known to television audiences as one of the scriptwriters of the highly popular detective series Hill Street Blues. When Twin Peaks ended in 1991, the show’s severely diminished audience were left with one of most puzzling cliffhangers ever seen on television, but the announcement made by Lynch and Frost in October 2014, that the show would return with nine fresh episodes premiering on Showtime in 2016, quickly went viral and revived interest in Twin Peaks’ distinctive world. In what follows, I intend to discuss the reasons why Twin Peaks was considered a highly original work, well ahead of its time, and how much the show was indebted to the legacy of classic American film noir; finally, I advance a few speculations about the possible plotlines the series might explore upon its return to the small screen. Jones mvremix: urban Pixies were fundamental in forming the definition of independent alternative music in the 1990’s. Signed to 4AD, Pixies earned a massive following and unwavering critical respect. Kurt Cobain (of Nirvana) and Thom Yorke (of Radiohead) stated that the music of the Pixies were a salient inspiration. The psycho- rock of their "Surfer Rosa" and "Come On Pilgrim" became essential for fans, as well as building blocks in their discography. Their massive success peaked when they released, "Doolittle". The album included the classic songs, "Hey", "Debaser", "Here Comes Your Man", and "Monkey Gone To Heaven". The movie, "Pump Up The Volume" included "Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf)" version. The song, "Where Is My Mind" was featured in the film, "Fight Club". After their last album ("Trompe Le Monde"), Pixies disbanded. Lead singer, Black Frances pursued a solo career as Frank Black. Kim Deal already had a side band called The Breeders. Along with her twin sister (Kelly), Kim Deal found major success when The Breeders released the single, "Cannonball" (from the "Last Splash" album). After a decade, Pixies reformed and began touring. Filmmakers Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin (known for the reality show "Family Bonds") jumped at the opportunity to document their reunion, rehearsals, and tour. This footage - purchase? evolved into the absorbing documentary, "loudQUIETloud: A Film About The Pixies". Both fans and band members dramatically changed since the early 90’s.
