Shivanandanagar, Distt. Tehri-Garhwal, Uttaranchal, Himalayas, India PUBLISHERS’ NOTE Sri Swami Sivanandaji. Maharaj was a healer of the body in his Purvashram (before he entered the Holy Order of Sannyasa). He was a born healer, with an extraordinary inborn love to serve humanity; that is why he chose the medical profession as a career. That is why he edited and published a health Journal “Ambrosia”. That is why he went over to Malaya to serve the poor in the plantations there. And, strangely enough, that is why, he renounced the world and embraced the Holy Order of Sannyasa. He was a healer of the body and the soul. This truth is reflected in the Ashram which he has established in Rishikesh. The huge hospital equipped with modern instruments was set up and the entire Ashram where all are welcome to get themselves healed of their heart’s sores and thoroughly refresh themselves in the divine atmosphere of the holy place. Sri Swamiji wanted that all systems of healing should flourish. He had equal love and admiration for all systems of healing. He wanted that the best of all the systems should be brought out and utilised in the service of Man.

ABSTRACT Television content in India has come a long way from public broadcaster Doordarshan controlled social and developmental programs to modern day entertainment shows. The article traces the major trends witnessed in the Indian television content, Hindi and other regional languages, and attempts to analyze the factors behind the nature of such programming. The article provides a critical analysis of the television soap operas (fiction) and the reality shows (non-fiction) aired in General Entertainment Channels (GECs). Some of the key trends witnessed in the content industry includes remakes, adaptations and dubbed content from transnational programs and concepts; remakes among Indian languages- from Hindi to regional language and vice versa; and a clear tilt towards the rural content, dictated by the ever expanding rural viewership for television channels. Importantly, the article establishes the fact that, though the content seems Indian in terms of production values, the origin of some of these popular programs are undoubtedly from the transnational borders. KEYWORDS: Content industry, fiction, Indian language channels, Indian television, non-fiction, rural television market, South Indian language channels, transnational content.

  • Representation of Women in Indian Tv Serials
Students’ Research Global Media Journal – Indian Edition/ISSN 2249-5835 Sponsored by the University of Calcutta/ www.caluniv.ac.in Summer Issue / June 2012 Vol. 3/No.1 REALITY OR MYTH: REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN INDIAN TV SERIALS Debanjali Roy Student, M.A. Second Year Department of English, University of Calcutta, India Email : [email protected] Abstract: Representations are formations,or as Roland Barthes has said of all operations of language,”they are deformations”. Similarly, back from the days of media reports on Oriental women being despotic and sensuous, media has succesfully presented and caricatured woman-ness.In this paper of mine I will primarily focus on the television soaps and serials of India and attempt to analyse how exactly do they present women and how successful are they in their presentation of „reality‟?Or is this reality a hackneyed one?Therein begins my analysis. The nation which claims to be in the process of “globalisation”or “modernisaion” still portrays its women in meaningless piles of costume jewellery and jardousi sarees. When women of India are progressing to be IPS and IAS Officers, all these contemporary “slice-of-life” soaps are still entangled in familial plots and schemes.Even with some attempts to actually portray reality, Indian serials have not evolved beyond the monochromatic dimensions of a faithful wife and a scheming vamp. Keywords: Representation, myth, reality, liminality, subaltern ,woman-ness, media, truth, question, stereotype, marginalized, sexuality, programmes, responsibility, society Introduction Representations are formations , or as Roland Barthes has said of all operations of language, „they are deformations‟ (Bhabha ,94).
