Resh Spring 2012 i Abstract Multifunctional Riverscapes by Kristen Nicole Podolak Doctor of Philosophy in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning University of California, Berkeley Professor G. Mathias Kondolf, Chair Society is investing in river restoration and urban river revitalization as a solution for sustainable development. Many of these river projects adopt a multifunctional planning and design approach that strives to meld ecological, aesthetic, and recreational functions. However our understanding of how to accomplish multifunctionality and how the different functions work together is incomplete. Numerous ecologically justified river restoration projects may actually be driven by aesthetic and recreational preferences that are largely unexamined. At the same time river projects originally designed for aesthetics or recreation are now attempting to integrate habitat and environmental considerations to make the rivers more sustainable. Through in-depth study of a variety of constructed river landscapes - including dense historical river bend designs, artificial whitewater, and urban stream restoration this dissertation analyzes how aesthetic, ecological, and recreational functions intersect and potentially conflict. To explore how aesthetic and biophysical processes work together in riverscapes, I explored the relationship between one ideal of beauty, an s-curve illustrated by William Hogarth in the 18th century and two sets of river designs: 18th century river designs in England and late 20th century river restoration designs in North America.

ICF CANOE MARATHON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS BULLETIN No. 1. GYŐR, HUNGARY 11-13 SEPTEMBER, 2015 GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR Győr has always been home to the training of sport icons: lots of champions have started their sports career or arrived to the top of it here. In the „City of Rivers” kayak and canoe competitors of Győr representing the most successful sport branch of Hungary have several times achieved smashing victories and classified very well in prestigious competitions. Upbringing of youth teams has always been a priority to Győr, so development in sportslife is unbroken here. Probably it is not just a pure coincidence that Győr can be home to such an important event in the kayak and canoeing sport for the third time, and also host to the first paracanoe competitions. I hope that our Guests will have time to discover the beauties of our City and have some days full of sports events and wonderful experiences. Zsolt Borkai Mayor BEFORE BREAKTHROUGH In 2015 the marathon canoe racing returns to Győr, the town of waters, where after 1999 and 2007 we can host the world championships in this discipline exceptionally already for the third time. The Hungarian canoe sport at the peak of its success is getting ready for the big shot, as we wish to organise the best ever marathon race in September, which marvels the whole world. The county seat of West Hungary really has excellent water features, the races run almost through the downtown area. And Győr is moreover a real sport town, where great many fans know and follow the events of the canoe sport and where full support is given to such big-scale events.

The purpose ofthis study was to evaluate the level ofservice quality within South African sport tourism and in the tourism industry in general, by focusing on a specific case study, the Berg River Canoe Marathon. The study discussed the importance of service quality within sport tourism, while the methods and instruments applicable to assess the level of service quality within sport tourism, were also addressed. The survey was conducted across selected viewpoints, which included the starting and the finishing points of the marathon. A total of 100 survey questionnaires were distributed to spectators and participants at the event using purposive sampling, while stratified random sampling was used to determine the viewpoints. The SERVQUAL dimensions were incorporated in the questionnaires as the basis to determine the level of service delivery at the event.
