NEWSLETTER Summer Edition 1993 Happy New Year to all Fairfield Canoe Club members and their families. This summer has seen the majority of the building works completed. lt has also been the start to an auxiliary period of increased enthusiasm, greater competitiveness and a new vibrancv around the club. Canoe Marathon Race 4 lvanhoe 20 rh Ballarat Triathlon Ballarat CHAIRMAN'S REPORT ln May of 1992, Club members were asked individually if they were able to assist the Club financially by making an interest free loan to the Club. The purpose of these loan monies was to enable your Directors to develop a co- ordinated and intensive program to complete the Club to the specifications and standards required by the Northcote City Council and to gain a certificate of completion of works. Many Club members made pledges of financial support to the Club and have since loaned the Club amounts ranging from $200 to $1000. Two of our long standing members, Jim Smith and Zoli Szigeti, now have loaned the CIub $1450 and $1400 respectively - interest free - very generous loans for which all Club members are indebted. As our Building Program has continued, your Directors have been'particularly careful and frugal with our funds, balancing the importance of a quality result with money spent. Club members who have watched our building's progress since January are giving us feedback that this care is indeed producing a pleasing result. Now the Crunch. Now, ten months after we originally asked Club members for an interest-free loan, we are again approaching all those members who have not vet oiven a loan to the Club to please review your finances, and see if NOW you are able to support your hard-working and conscientious Directors achieve a Clubhouse which is fully operational. We need further funds to complete our works. We need interest-free loans from Club members or their families to ensure our Club is on a secure financial footing. lf you were previously unable to make a loan to the Club - can you now, please! lf you have joined the Club in the last yeat, could you please make an interest- free loan to the Club now! Most loans are $500, but any loan will be gratefully received. When works are completed, monies will be steadily repaid over time, possibly off-setting annual fees. The reward for all Club members will be a quality, fully-operational clubhouse in a significant and beautiful location, and with an unencumbered title. Help us avoid any borrowings from any financial institution. Please phone Margaret Buck on 489 0556 or send your cheque now to Margaret at 41 Park Crescent, Fairfield 3078. Please make your cheque out to Fairfield Canoe Club. At the first meeting of the present Board of Directors we confirmed our priorities for 1992-3. These priorities included completion of building works, increased participation in canoeing and representation at VCA committees, continuing fundraising and increased membership. At present, all these goals are being achieved in varying degrees. Please help us to achieve even better results by continuing your support in whichever way you can. We look forward to hearing from you soon. ln the meantime, good paddling. Margaret Buck - Chairman MARATHON UPDATE Well the Murray Marathon has been completed. Congratulations to all who endured the five days down the Murray from competitors to land crew and supporters. This year Fairfield Canoe Club had a strong contingent of paddlers who entered the longest canoe race. Those people were:- Mr Joe Alia - Relay TK2 Ms Margaret Buck - TK1/ W Vet 50's Ms Kerryn Bonnet - TK2 Mixed Open Mr Wayne Cook - TK2 Mixed Open Mr iames Evans - TKliMO Ms Danielle Filippi - Relay TK2 Mr Walter Podolakin & - TC2 Will Howard Special congratulations go out to two Fairfield Canoe Club members. Firstly to Margaret Buck for not only winning her class and setting new Murray Marathon records for TK1/W Vet 50, TK1/W Vet 40 and TK1/W open classes, but for finishing first in all the womens touring classes and being honored with second place overall on adjusted time. Secondly to James Evans for winning the mens TK1 open and also, setting a new Murray Marathon record. Although Fairfield Canoe Club had great support on the water, we cannot look past the enthusiastic support Fairfield Canoe Club received off the water. Those people were as follows. Past Chairman of the Red Cross Murray Marathon committee Jenny Mayne running the mobile shop for Red Cross at all Red Cross canoeing events and always assisting generously in fundraising. Jon Mayne was also helpful in aiding paddlers and in regular publicity through the media. While Ken Chandler and Margaret were not in attendance at this year's Murray Marathon their presence was felt with regular media reports through radio station 3RPH. Neil Grierson (land crewing), I was told was the driving force behind Margaret Buck's great achievement. One guess who told me that? Mandi Coillet and her father followed part of the marathon in anticipation of future marathons. Last, but not least the "Guru" himself Zoli, Dianne and Thomas Szigeti and partners, and past Fairfield Canoe Club member Vid Juriskay visite$ Echuca to cheer on the Fairfield contingent. 1992 canoeing results for Fairfield Canoe Club members. There are many paddlers out there who have never heard of the game, nor that Australia is considered one of the best, if not the best, in the world in this interesting and skilful sport.
