It is my honor and privilege to welcome you all to the 84th Annual Western Michigan Yachting Association Championship Regatta. The WMYA is without a doubt one of the best run, most fun, family oriented, yet competitive regattas in the Midwest. Our traditions run deep and our family ties help sustain and grow this organization and our member clubs. I am proud to say that my grandfather William R. Munroe was the Commodore back in 1966, and now it is my turn to give back to the WMYA. I want to thank all of the volunteers that support both the WMYA and the White Lake Yacht Club. It is truly a pleasure to be working with so many enthusiastic friends who give freely of their time to make this awesome event happen. Midge Verplank reminisces about Chuck Harrett I first met Chuck in 1947 when he took some Spring Lake sailors into his parent's home in Grand Rapids. We were there to participate in the Grand Rapids-Spring lake Yacht Clubs inter club regatta. He was promoting sailing and establishing friendships as a teenager, and he never stopped doing it during his whole life. We competed head to head for several years, tough competition on the water, but always a renewal of the friendship after the race. When I was Commodore of the Western Michigan Yachting Association in 1967 Chuck was selected by the Grand Rapids Yacht Club to represent them on the board of directors.

Upon my election last November, I outlined my intention for World Sailing to communicate better with its Member National Authorities, Regional Associations, Class Associations, Committee members, and the hard-working volunteers that make our sport work, from the grassroots to the peak of performance. I hope that the introduction of these quarterly newsletters will help to achieve that. Open communication within our sport has always been important, but given the current climate, it is more crucial now than it has ever been. It is important that World Sailing takes the lead by sharing best practice, forming new ideas and creating inspiring content that touches all aspects of our sport. It is also vital that this material is well distributed across our community. It is a pity that we have not been able to meet face to face for so long, but I have enjoyed meeting and engaging with you directly and via our Regional Meetings. It is important that our dialogue works two ways so we can work together to grow the beautiful sport we all love.
