55 New Years Eve Arrangements

Robert Emerson Director Open Space and Environmental Services

56 NEW YEARS EVE 2013/14 • Alcohol Free/Alcohol Prohibited areas again extended to all foreshore vantage points. • 52 people treated for minor injuries in North Sydney’s foreshore parks. 25 patients transported by ambulance to hospital mainly as a result of intoxication or drug related issues. • 3 people arrested on the night and each of the arrests was for drug related crime. • 442 Police and 65 Council security staff rostered to deal with crowd management issues • Council provided more than 225 additional temporary public toilets, 600 metres of security fencing and 140 crowd control barriers • 59 North Sydney streets are closed and reopened after midnight on New Years Eve. • 55 staff commenced the cleanup at 5.00am on New Years Day collecting 21 tonnes of rubbish strewn across North Sydney’s foreshore parks and reserves. • 250 litter bins were distributed in foreshore parks prior to the event • The operational cost to the Council last year was $242,000

57 NEW YEARS EVE 2013/14

What worked well last year? • No serious injury last year • Additional alcohol prohibited areas resulted in improved crowd behaviour • Street closure strategy worked well • Good level of police support • Cleanup went well

58 2014/15 PLANS FOR NEW YEARS EVE IN WOLLSTONECRAFT WARD • Managed access areas at Bradfield Park and Blues Point Reserve will remain • Balls Head Reserve, Carradah Park, will again be dedicated alcohol free this New Years Eve • The majority of the planning template from last year will be again implemented i.e. special event clearways, infrastructure etc etc

59 2014/15 PLANS FOR NEW YEARS EVE IN WOLLSTONECRAFT WARD Risks: • Crowd may shift out of alcohol prohibited areas • If Bradfield Park reaches capacity and is closed then the surrounding residential areas could be inundated with people. • That if Bradfield Park and Blues Reserve reach capacity early in the evening people arriving by train may depart at Waverton Station rather than Milson Point or North Sydney Station. • Crowd exit
