The donation had one requirement: we raise an equal amount from other members in 60-days so that we had adequate funds for the work, and that any disruptive construction could be performed during this summer when the building has less usage. I’m delighted to report we exceeded our goal with pledges as of March 12 at $256,000 resulting in combined total of $506,000! We’ve now activated 3 work-streams: The Kitchen Renovation Committee (chaired by Kathryn Frish, Alice Rosen and Cristie Schlosser) and the Building & Grounds (B&G) Committee (chaired by Phil Rosenfeld and Ken Portnoy) will now move into high-gear. They’ve been working for a few months in anticipation of the success of the capital campaign. We hope to attract additional pledges now that the projects are moving forward. Some members hold on making gifts until they know an initiative is proceeding. Our building is nearly 50 years old, and cost of all the work needed exceeds $500,000. A remodeled kitchen will present a variety of new opportunities – including cooking classes and social events…along with the need to implement “kitchen rules.” We’ve been in contact with Temples across the country to learn how they keep their kitchens in good shape. Best practices include controlled access, training for volunteers who use the kitchen, and more structured reservations and deposits. We are blessed with a wonderful membership that makes Temple Shalom a terrific community. Please let me know ([email protected]) if you’d like to be involved in any of the above projects, or if you’d like to discuss a contribution. This is an opportunity for all of us to “pay it forward” so that we sustain our beautiful facilities and grounds. We express sincere appreciation to the following families who heard the call, acted quickly, and pledged to the 2019 Capital Campaign (list current as of March 20, 2019): Larry and Randi Alter Josh and Jen Goldman Michael and Andrea Sarner Carolee Blumin Gary and Elaina Gross Rodney and Cristie Schlosser Brenda Brand Fred and Jerri Grunewald Larry and Celia Schoenbrun The Eichelbaum Family Leon and Chris Harris Myron and Jacquie Schwitzer Steve and Gail Enda Gary and Gail Hartstein Alan and Elaine Slomowitz Marshall and Michelle Funk Bob and Carolyn Landers Steve and Ann Weintraub Jason and Julie Gadsby Irv and Cindy Munn Temple Shalom Brotherhood Dorothy Garsson Mel and Zelda Naftalis Temple Shalom Sisterhood Marvin and Eunice Gerard Ken and Reesa Portnoy Allan and Gail Gilbert Paul and Raelaine Radnitz Add your name to this list! Pledges can be paid over 3 years. Call Executive Director Steve Lewis at 972-661-1810 x 202. April 2019 www.templeshalomdallas.org Page 5 Dallas City Council District 12 Candidates Forum Wednesday, April 17 Doors Open 7:00pm - Program Begins 7:30pm Temple Shalom Temple Shalom will host a Candidates Forum for the three candidates for City Council District 12. District 12 is one of fourteen single member districts in the Council (the Mayor is the 15th member of the Council), and covers far North Dallas. Many of the Temple’s members reside in District 12. The candidates are: Cara Mendelsohn, Carolyn (Cookie) Peadon and Daniel Powell The coming Dallas Municipal Election on Saturday May 4, 2019 (early voting begins April 22nd) will be one of the most important in modern history. The race for a new Mayor features nine candidates. Also, for the first time in memory, all 14 single member districts have contested races. Five of the Council races have no incumbent candidate, including District 12. With so much attention on the high profile Mayoral Election, Temple leadership felt it would serve the membership best to focus on District 12 – and its candidates. This is not a debate. Instead, candidates will have an opportunity to present their platforms, then answer questions from the moderator and from the audience. The forum will be an opportunity to hear the candidates’ views on issues of importance to residents in District 12, including: Within District 12 Scheduling and impacts of the planned DART Cotton Belt Line Plans for revitalization of the Arapaho Village Shopping Center Zoning, density and other issues of concern to homeowners and tenants The future of recycling in Dallas City-wide Goals for the Trinity River initiative Plans for additional “deck parks” (à la Klyde Warren Park) such as near the Zoo Fair Park revitalization Economic Development incentives Please make plans to attend this informative civic event. Make seating reservations at https://tinyurl.com/district12forum This forum is free and open to the public. Invite your friends. His language is strong, high, and poetic. And it is interspersed with several passages which indicate substantial familiarity with metallurgy. An interpretation has been provided by the much-maligned former American Pres- ident, Herbert C. Hoover, who was a talented, unusually well-educated mining en- 3ab gineer, and by his wife, Lou H. Hoover.2' The Hoovers discern in the Jeremiah passages the ancient process of cupellation: an impure mixture of silver or gold with undesired admixtures is melted in a cupel, a shallow dish shaped from bone ash. Lead is added. A blast of air oxidizes the non-precious metals. The base metal oxides dis- solve in the lead oxide, which is skimmed off, leaving behind the pure silver or gold. Jeremiahinvokes the process metaphorically;the wickedness of his people is so great, they will not be purified. The Hoovers remark: Fromthe numberof his metaphorsin metallurgicalterms we maywell concludethat Jeremiah was of considerablemetallurgical experience, which may account for his criticaltenor of mind.4 Jeremiah'sstern criticism caught our eye in its conjoining of a scientific or tech- nological argument and an appeal to purity, a condemnation of mixture.

Nickeloden Comes to Township Special Issue #2 A special Mr. WT edition of The Patriot April 28, 2011 Favorite pick up line? “We should hang out sometime”, thanks to Josh Sundquist. If you could pick anyone besides you to win, who would it be and why? Joe Bollendorf because when I first moved here, back in tenth grade, he helped me out so much. I am very thankful for that and to this day I still consider him a great friend. What is your hidden talent? Tie a cherry stem into a knot and unwrap a starburst with my tongue. If you could bring three things with you to a deserted island, what wouldthey be? Gel for my hair, Snuggie for when it gets cold, and some volleyball I have with a bloody handprint on it. Childhood aspiration vs. current aspiration? Then: become a superhero and fight crime. Now: lift and have body like Steve Ryan Francisco Chapman so all the girls can stare at me. “Mr. January” What WTHS teacher has had the most impact on your high school career? Mr. Byatt, he is the modern day Forrest Gump. He taught me small things about Otto from Rocket Power life that I still use today. He’s a very kind and awesome person. If you could change the mascot, what would it be? A double tusking narwhal with the ability to shoot lightning from its fins. Childhood aspiration vs. current aspiration? When I was little I wanted to be a singing chef, that quickly changed to astronaut, and now, now I plan on being a physics major and inventing my ideas.

  • The Atlanta Jewish Community: Collaboration in the Face of Difference
The AlexAndriAn VII, no. 1 (2018) The Atlanta Jewish Community: Collaboration in the Face of Difference Leilani K. Harris In the years before World War II began, antisemitic ideology hung in the air of Europe like a virus. Feeding off the viral tendrils, the Nazi regime went to great lengths to spread the plague of persecution. Across the Atlantic, the Jewish community became aware of the increasingly hostile atmosphere that pervaded the European mindset. Well before the world faced another global war, American Jews began to work in earnest to coordinate relief efforts for those living under the oppression of the Third Reich. The leadership of the American Jewish community did what they could through the restraints of the Great Depression, devoting their lives to saving those abroad from the devastation that would later occur. Through countless hours of combing through the archived newspapers of the Southern Israelite and digging through the archives of the William Breman Jewish Heritage and Holocaust Museum, the actions of Harold Hirsch, David Marx, Harry H. Epstein, and Tobias Geffen showed how men of differing ideologies could make a stand to save unknown souls in the name of religious tolerance and human decency. Their actions serve as a lesson to current and future generations that hope, dedication, and perseverance can and will prevail. Though the Holocaust continued and the actions of Hirsch, Marx, Epstein, and Geffen may have seemed small and inconsequential in the face of millions of lives lost, their dedication still mattered. To those who lived due to the deeds of the Atlanta few, their actions would mean everything.
