This page intentionally left blank PREFACE In 1879 George Bühler published his English translation of the Dharmasu¯tras of A¯ pastamba and Gautama under the title The Sacred Laws of the A¯ryas as the second volume of the Sacred Books of the East edited by Max Müller. Three years later he brought out the translations of Vasis.t.ha and Baudha¯yana, and in 1886 he published the translation of the law book of Manu (Manu Smrti) in the same series. With the benefit of a hundred ˚ years of scholarship and numerous printed editions of the Dharmasu¯tras to work from, it is easy to find fault with his pioneering translations. But Bühler had to work directly from manuscripts and without the benefit of much that scholars today take for granted. I have benefited enormously from his translation and from his thorough and detailed comments in the introductions and notes. I want to acknowledge my deep debt of gratitude to Bühler’s pioneering work. There are many individuals and institutions that helped me during the years when I was preparing this translation. A Guggenheim Fellowship and a faculty research assignment from the University of Texas in 1996–7 allowed me a year’s freedom to concentrate on several research projects, including this trans- lation. Ludo Rocher came to the rescue and made sense of several difficult and corrupt passages, as did Richard Lariviere. Gregory Schopen read the introduction and much of the trans- lation and as usual made wise and judicious suggestions. Their input has made this work better and the translations more accurate and accessible. My wife, Suman, read the entire work several times and caught numerous errors and lapses. Sanskrit diacritics are simple and, with a min- imum of effort, should enable the reader to pronounce these words properly. A general rule is that an ‘h’ after a consonant is not a separate letter but merely represents the aspirated version of a consonant. Thus ‘bh’ is pronounced somewhat as in ‘abhor’, and ‘ph’ not as in ‘physics’ but as in ‘shepherd’. The dental group of consonants (t, th, d, dh, n) are distinguished from the retroflex group indicated by a dot placed beneath (t., t.h, d, dh, n. ). The distinction in their pronunciation is somewhat di˙ ffi˙cult for the Western ear. The dentals are pronounced with the tip of the tongue placed behind the upper front teeth, and the sound is similar to the way these letters are pronounced in Romance languages such as French (e.g. toi, de). The English pronunciation of these letters is closer to the Sanskrit retroflex, but the latter is pronounced with the tip of the tongue striking the roof of the mouth further back. Thus ‘t.’ is somewhat like t in ‘try’, and ‘d’ is like d in dental. The difference between the dental ˙ ‘n’ and retroflex ‘n. ’ is very difficult for untrained ears to dis- tinguish and is better ignored. The same applies to the palatal sibilant ‘s´’ and the retroflex ‘s.’; both may be pronounced as sh in ‘shame’. ‘m. ’ nasalizes the preceding vowel sound, as in French bon. ‘h.’, with a dot underneath and most frequently at the end of a word, is a pure aspiration and is to be distinguished from the consonant ‘h’. In practice, the vowel sound preceding it is pronounced faintly; thus ‘h.’ of bhuvoh. is pronounced like the ho in Soho when it is pronounced with the accent on the first syl- lable and the second shortened. People who prefer intolerance, policies of ‘zero tolerance,’ or claim not to tolerate the intolerant or the intolerable are only partly responsible. Th ey share culpability with those who call for moving Beyond Tolerance (as Gustav Niebuhr and others have titled several recent books) to deeper and fuller attitudes of acceptance, affi rmation, respect, and celebration of all myriad, manner, and variety of diversity. Yet some religious and nonreligious people balk at what they see as indiscrimi- nate approbation of ideas, activities, or worship they deem false or improper. It may be diffi cult, if not impossible, to celebrate features of faiths or ideologies that perceptibly contradict or oppose one’s own. When communities have experi- enced decades, centuries, or millennia of discord, ambivalent or tolerant coexist- ence could be “as good as it gets,” at least for a time. Where affi rmation is impracticable, toleration and coexistence for adherents of diff ering or confl icting religions and ideologies should be considered indispensable in a spiritually diverse world. Jacob Neusner, Bruce Chilton, and other contributors address such dissonances in Religious Tolerance in World Religions by inspecting political, scriptural, historical, theological, and ritual resources for tolerance (and to a lesser degree, intolerance) in ancient Greece, Rome, and Israel; classical and contemporary Judaism, Christi- an ity, Mormonism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism.

D Scholar, Department of Sanskrit, Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University, Purulia, West Bengal Received: May 22, 2018 Accepted: July 11, 2018 ABSTRACT We can generally say, any composition which has a musical sound, is called chanda. Chanda has been one of the Vedāṅgas since Vedic period. Vedic verses are composed in several chandas. The number of Vedic chandas is 21, out of which 7 are mainly used. Earliest poetic composition in public language (laukika Sanskrit) started from Valmiki, later it became a fashion and then a discipline for composition (kāvya). But here has been a difference in Vedic and laukika chandas. Where Vedic chnadas are identified by the number of syllables (varṇa or akṣara) in a line of verse or whole verse and the number of lines in the verse, laukika chanda is identified by the order of the laghu-guru syllables. The number of the laukika chandas is not yet finally defined but many texts have been composed describing the different number of chandas. Each chanda of laukika Sanskrit (post Vedic Sanskrit) consists of four pādas or caraṇas, that is, the fourth part of the chanda. Keywords: Chanda, Vedāṅgas, Chandaśāstra, pāda, Chandomañjarī. Flame Teeth and the Teeth of the Sun IT' \'ERYWHERE and always fire has been conceived as some- -—-^ thing that consumes, devours or eats hke a hungry animal or human being; and the more or less individualized flames of fire are sometimes viewed as teeth, but more commonly as tongues. In the very ancient Hindu Rig-Veda the god Agni primarily rep- resents ordinary fire, but secondarily the fiery sun; and there it is said that "He crops the dry ground strewn (with grass and wood), like an animal grazing, he with a golden beard, with shining teeth" (Mandala V, Sukta VH, 7; translation of H. H. Wilson, Vol. HI, p. 247), while his light "quickly spreads over the earth, when with his teeth (of flame) he devours his food" {Ih. VH, iii, 4; Wilson's, Vol. IV, p. 36).^ The Mexican goddess of devouring fire is called Chantico ("In- the-house," with reference to her character as divinity of the do- mestic hearth) and also Ouaxolotl ("Split-at-the-top," for the flame divided into two tips) and Tlappalo ("She-of-the-red-butterfly," perhaps from the flame-like flickering of the insect).
