Deerfield Academy New Faculty Bios 2017 TOM BERGERON Orchestra & Chamber Music Director Born and raised in the Pioneer Valley, Thomas comes to Deerfield after building a distinguished international career as a musician and educator. He holds two advanced music degrees from Yale and a business degree from The Isenberg School at UMass Amherst. Thomas has held teaching positions at Tufts University, Williams College, Bennington College, Yale, Amherst College, and The Brimmer and May School. Prior to his appointment at Deerfield, Thomas was a resident fellow with Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect, taught the inmates at Sing Sing Correctional Facility through Musicambia, served as an educational consultant for The Harmony Program in New York City, and was an inclusive learning teaching artist with VSA Massachusetts. As a performing artist, he is currently Principal Trumpet with the Springfield Symphony, a member of the Atlantic Brass Quintet, and has released two critically-acclaimed albums of his own hybrid jazz chamber music. He has performed on many Broadway shows and has worked with T-Pain, Vampire Weekend, Gabriel Kahane, The Danish National Symphony Orchestra, The American Symphony, The Temptations, Idina Menzel, Judy Collins, and Arlo Guthrie, among others. Network television appearances include Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and CBS This Morning. PRESS RELEASE June 27, 2016 Keio University Keio to Send High School Students to two of America’s Prestigious Boarding Schools, Phillips Exeter Academy and Philips Academy Andover, under a Double Diploma Program With the goal of fostering global leaders from the secondary school level, Keio offers a study abroad program, in which students with high academic motivation are selected from its five affiliated high schools1 to study at prestigious boarding schools in the US and the UK. Starting 2017, Keio high school students will participate in the program at Phillips Academy Andover, as well as at the newest addition to the list of host schools, Phillips Exeter Academy. Third-year high school students who are sent to these boarding schools will attain diplomas from both Keio and their host institution. 1. Objectives In 2014, Keio launched a study abroad program at its affiliated schools in which excellent students are selected to study abroad for one year at a prestigious boarding school among the so-called Ten Schools2 in the US and the Great Nine3 public schools in the UK. By 2015, the list of host schools expanded to three in the US and two in the UK and Keio sent a total of ten students abroad. By offering students the opportunity to live and study with some of the brightest students from around the world and to pursue a variety of academic and extracurricular activities, Keio seeks to develop global leaders that will lead future society. Mathematics 201: Geometry Deerfield Academy 2017-2018 Problem Book Mathematics 201 To MAT201 Students Members of the Deerfield Academy, Emma Willard School and Phillips Exeter Academy Mathematics Department have created the material in this book. As you work through it, you will discover that algebra, geometry, and trigonometry have been integrated into a mathematical whole. There is no Chapter 5, nor is there a distinct section on right triangles. The curriculum is problem-based, rather than chapter-oriented. A major goal of this course is have you practice thinking mathematically and to learn to become a more independent and creative problem solver. Problem solving techniques, new concepts and theorems will become apparent as you work through the problems, and it is your classroom community’s responsibility to make these conclusions together. Your responsibility is to keep appropriate notes for your records — there are no boxes containing important theorems. There is no index as such, but the reference section at the end of the problems should help you recall the meanings of key words that are defined in the problems (where they usually appear italicized). I. The Mathematical Thinking Process 1. Stay/Think/Say/Draw a. Reading each question carefully and repeatedly is essential, especially since definitions, highlighted in italics, are routinely inserted into the problem texts.
