  • The Church and the Catholicate
The Church and the Catholicate Among the ancient Churches in Christendom, the Church of the East (Persian Church), the Armenian Church and the Georgian Church used the title Catholicos to designate the Supreme Heads of their Churches. The title indicates that the holder is the Head and Common Father of that particular Church. He is the Father of the Fathers. It was used by the Supreme Heads of the above mentioned three Churches, situated outside the boundary of the ancient Roman Empire. Thus the title became part of the common heritage of the Church of Christ. In the Roman Empire, in its place, the Chief Bishop was called Patriarch. Thus the bishops of Rome, Alexandria and Antioch were known as Patriarchs. The Bishops of Constantinople (today’s Istanbul in Turkey) and Jerusalem were raised to the status of Patriarch by the Ecumenical Council of Constantinople in 381 and Chalcedon in 451 respectively. Regarding the juridical and canonical powers, both Catholicos and Patriarch have the same rights and duties. Both are Father and Head of a sui juris Church (particular Church). Eventually the above mentioned three Catholicoi added the title Patriarch to their names. In Kerala/India it was in 1912 that the title Catholicos was introduced in the Syrian Jacobite (Orthodox) Church. Until that time the head of the Jacobite Church in India was known as the Malankara Metropolitan. The title Catholicos was established in India through the efforts of Fr. P. T. Geevarghese, a Jacobite priest (Archbishop Mar Ivanios in the Catholic Church since 1930), by the Senior Patriarch of Antioch, Mar Abd-al-Msiha, residing at that time in Tur-Abdin/Turkey.

IN THE SUPREME COURT OF INDIA CIVIL APPELLATE JURISDICTION CIVIL APPEAL NO(S). 7115-7116 OF 2019 (ARISING FROM SLP(C) Nos.20661-20662 OF 2019) FR. ISSAC MATTAMMEL COR-EPISCOPA ..APPELLANT(S) VERSUS ST. MARY’S ORTHODOX SYRIAN CHURCH & ORS. ..RESPONDENT(S) O R D E R 1. Leave granted. 2. It passes comprehension that how the judge has passed the impugned interim order which runs expressly contrary to the decision of this Court in K.S. Verghese v. St. Peters & St. Pauls Syrian Orthodox Church & Ors., (2017) 15 SCC 333. This Court has passed several judgments and orders to the effect that no such interference can be made by any court after the decision has been rendered by this Court in a representative suit which is binding on all concerned and it is the constitutional duty of all concerned to obey the judgment and order of this Court. As per Article 141 of the Constitution of India, the law declared by this Court is binding on all courts and under Article 144, civil and judicial authorities within the territory of India shall act in aid of Supreme Court. Kerala being Indian Territory all concerned are bound to act accordingly. We have intended peace to come in Church but due to such orders passed in contravention of law laid down by this Court law can never be obeyed. This amount to a violation of judgment and order. The High Court has passed an interim order in violation of the judgments and orders passed by this Court. We 1 are not able to understand what kind of judicial discipline is reflected while passing the impugned order, which should not have been passed at all.

  • 1 Rassophore Monk Angelos Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary Perpetual Embers
1 Rassophore Monk Angelos Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary Perpetual Embers: A Chronicle of ROCOR’s Missionary Efforts in India Introduction The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia,1 although founded as the church of the post-revolutionary Russian diaspora, also served as the custodian and guardian of the scattered pre-revolutionary Russian Orthodox missions in various parts of the world. From these, some quarters of ROCOR inherited and maintained a missionary spirit that has resulted in Orthodoxy flourishing in places where there had previously been no preaching of Christ’s saving message. Some of these missions have continued to blaze like a fire amidst the growing darkness of our secular age while others have remained ‘perpetual embers,’ steadily glowing through the toils of dedicated missionaries yet never reaching their full potential; God’s will for their full fruition seemingly delayed until He deems it meet. One such mission field is India: the great subcontinent, birthplace of two of the world’s most significant religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, home to one of its largest Muslim populations, and native land to one of the most ancient eastern Christian communities – the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala.2 ROCOR has been present in India, to some extent, throughout most of ROCOR’s history, particularly in the years immediately before and after the Second World War. A number of ROCOR luminaries – including some who later became bishops and first hierarchs– were involved in the small Indian mission at one time or another, but few, with certain very notable exceptions, made India their home for any considerable period of time.

  • Patron Saint's
Baselios Geevarghese II: In Memoriam Baselius College rings in the New Year with the celebration of its Patron Saint’s Day in the first week of January to offer glowing tributes to His Holiness Baselios Geevarghese II, the late lamented Catholicos of the East, in whose hallowed name this institution was established in 1964 and which has today grown into a great BASELIUS COLLEGE temple of higher learning in Central Kerala. NAAC accredited @ A Grade His Holiness was an illustrious prelate, who like a lodestar, steered the destinies of the KOTTAYAM 686 001 Orthodox Christian Community of India, especially during a very critical period in the history of the Church. As the reigning Catholicos of the Orthodox Church for almost three and a half decades (1929–64), His Holiness left his indelible mark in the socio – cultural domains of Kerala. Sensing the need of the hour, His Holiness pioneered the dissemination of knowledge by founding several educational institutions in the then underdeveloped areas of Kerala. It is in this light that the cultural historians th of Kerala have often equipoised His Holiness with other champions of social causes 54 like Sri Narayana Guru and Chattambi Swamikal. The Holy Father also infused a high sense of spirituality in the minds of many a faithful who often thronged before him, Patron seeking his advice, blessings and solace. His Holiness was born on 16th June 1874 into the illustrious Kallacheril family of Kurichy. The young Punnoose, as he was called then, began his ecclesiastical training Saint’s at the early age of nine under the tutelage of the saintly Parumala Thirumeni.
