Birational Geometry of Algebraic Varieties

Cong. of Math. – 2018 Rio de Janeiro, Vol. 1 (563–588) BIRATIONAL GEOMETRY OF ALGEBRAIC VARIETIES Caucher Birkar 1 Introduction This is a report on some of the main developments in birational geometry in recent years focusing on the minimal model program, Fano varieties, singularities and related topics, in characteristic zero. This is not a comprehensive survey of all advances in birational geometry, e.g. we will not touch upon the positive characteristic case which is a very active area of research. We will work over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero. Varieties are all quasi-projective. Birational geometry, with the so-called minimal model program at its core, aims to classify algebraic varieties up to birational isomorphism by identifying “nice” elements in each birational class and then classifying such elements, e.g study their moduli spaces. Two varieties are birational if they contain isomorphic open subsets. In dimension one, a nice element in a birational class is simply a smooth and projective element. In higher dimension though there are infinitely many such elements in each class, so picking a rep- resentative is a very challenging problem. Before going any further lets introduce the canonical divisor. 1.1 Canonical divisor. To understand a variety X one studies subvarieties and sheaves on it. Subvarieties of codimension one and their linear combinations, that is, divisors play a crucial role. Of particular importance is the canonical divisor KX . When X is smooth this is the divisor (class) whose associated sheaf OX (KX ) is the canonical sheaf !X := det ΩX where ΩX is the sheaf of regular differential forms. -

Otto Abstract Virtually everyone working in cancer research is familiar with the “Warburg effect”, i.e., anaerobic glycolysis in the presence of oxygen in tumor cells. However, few people nowadays are aware of what lead Otto Warburg to the discovery of this observation and how his other scientific contributions are seminal to our present knowledge of metabolic and energetic processes in cells. Since science is a human endeavor, and a scientist is imbedded in a network of social and academic contacts, it is worth taking a glimpse into the biography of Otto Warburg to illustrate some of these influences and the historical landmarks in his life. His creative and innovative thinking and his experimental virtuosity set the framework for his scientific achievements, which were pioneering not only for cancer research. Here, I shall allude to the prestigious family background in imperial Germany; his relationships to Einstein, Meyerhof, Krebs, and other Nobel and notable scientists; his innovative technical developments and their applications in the advancement of biomedical sciences, including the manometer, tissue slicing, and cell cultivation. The latter were experimental prerequisites for the first metabolic measurements with tumor cells in the 1920s. In the 1930s–1940s, he improved spectrophotometry for chemical analysis and developed the optical tests for measuring activities of glycolytic enzymes. Warburg’s reputation brought him invitations to the USA and contacts with the Rockefeller Foundation; he received the Nobel Prize in 1931. -

Press release 13 August 2014 Two Fields Medals 2014 awarded to ERC laureates The 2014 Fields Medals were awarded today to four outstanding mathematicians, of whom two are grantees of the European Research Council (ERC): Prof. Artur Avila (Brazil-France), an ERC Starting grant holder since 2010, and Prof. Martin Hairer (Austria) has been selected for funding under an ERC Consolidator grant in 2013. They received the prize respectively for their work on dynamical systems and probability, and on stochastic analysis. The other two laureates are Prof. Manjul Barghava (Canada-US) and Prof. Maryam Mirzakhani (Iran). The Medals were announced at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) taking place from 13 – 21 August in Seoul, South Korea. On the occasion of the announcement, ERC President Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, a mathematician himself, said: “On behalf of the ERC Scientific Council, I would like to congratulate warmly all four Fields Medallists for their outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics. My special congratulations go to Artur Avila and Martin Hairer, who are both brilliant scientists supported by the ERC. We are happy to see that their remarkable talent in the endless frontiers of science has been recognised. The Fields Medals awarded today are also a sign that the ERC continues to identity and fund the most promising researchers across Europe; this is true not only in mathematics but in all scientific disciplines.” EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, said: “I would like to congratulate the four laureates of the Fields Medal announced today. An important ingredient is a proof that the primes enjoy the so-called Hardy-Littlewood majorant property. We de- rive this by giving a new proof of a rather more general result of Bourgain which, because of a close analogy with a classical argument of Tomas and Stein from Euclidean harmonic analysis, might be called a restriction theorem for the primes. 1. Introduction Arguably the second most famous result of Klaus Roth is his 1953 upper bound [21] on r3(N), defined 17 years previously by Erd˝os and Tur´an to be the cardinality of the largest set A [N] containing no nontrivial 3-term arithmetic ⊆ progression (3AP). Roth was the first person to show that r3(N) = o(N). In fact, he proved the following quantitative version of this statement. He managed the transition to ‘glossy’ with flair and panache. As historian of the College and sometime holder of many of its working offices, he also brought a knowledge of its past and an understanding of its mysteries that I am unable to match.
