Beiteddine-Deir El Qamar-Mussa Castle Al Chouf Cedar Beiteddine: Beit ed-Dine is a small Lebanese town in the Chouf District, approx. 50 km southeast of Beirut and near the town of Deir el-Qamar from which it is separated by a steep valley. The town is famous for its magnificent Beiteddine Palace which hosts the Beiteddine Festival every summer. Moussa Castle: It was built single-handedly by Moussa Abdel Karim Al-Maamari (born in July 27, 1931), a Lebanese visionary. It is the work of his life. He needed 60 years (21900 days and 394200 hours) of work. It is 54 km from Beirut, and 9 km away from Beit-Eddine, center of the Shouf district. The Grotto that extends for 426 meters (till now) lies on Ain Wazein-Batloun road, near the northern end of Ain Wazein. The grotto was discovered in 2003. The preparation process lasted three years thanks to personal efforts. 1 Nazek Abu-Ilwan ABED KAMAL JUMBLAT: “THE TEACHER,” THE LEADER Submitted to Fairfax University, USA as part of the Learning Plan aspect of the program requirements leading to the degree of DOCTORATE OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D) Philosophy December 2002 2 ABSTRACT As a seeker of knowledge, and a reader who has the mania of exploring; who is attracted to high principles, and who is searching to find a meaning to life, I have found Kamal Jumblat- the Lebanese philosopher- both; the reference and the master. Jumblat has left a rich heritage that answers the major concerns of the uplifted spirits. In admiration of his transparent soul and illuminating philosophy, I have chosen him the subject of my research work, so I can be one of the witnesses on his idealism and integrity that were revealed in both: his words and actions. Jumblat led an abundant life for which the French author, Remon Bernard, considered him “A school of pure high wisdom.” I have chosen the English language to write this research so I may contribute in introducing Kamal Jumblat’s great legacy to a large audience in the English speaking countries. For what has been written about him in English is very limited in contrast to what he was, and to what has been written in French and Arabic. Kamal Jumblat has attained local, Arabic, and international recognition. A Lebanese author says about him: “We continue publishing what is written about him; Kamal Jumblat is a torch we are committed to keep enlightened in our souls, minds and hearts.” Kamal Jumblat is an enrichment to knowledge since he sought the sources of illumination from ancient, modern, eastern, and western cultures; where the unity is embodied in the diversity, and the Reality of Existence is the one to which he devoted his life.

Al-Mawred Al-Thaqafi (Culture Resource) Organization launched in 2009 a regional initiative aims to identify the main features of cultural policy in Arab countries. The ultimate goal is to build a Knowledge Base that supports cultural planning and collaboration in the region, as well as propose mechanisms to develop cultural work in Arab countries. First stage of the project targeted preliminary surveys of policies, legislations, and practices that guide cultural work in eight Arab countries: Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. The process of Monitoring was conducted in the period between May 2009 and January 2010 by Arab researchers from all eight countries, and thus “Ettijahat. Independent culture” as the regional coordinator of the project developed the surveys and updated its information and data through specialized researchers who reviewed the information and amended it based on the most recent developments in the cultural scene. The study has been completed according to the Compendium model which is adopted in study about cultural policies around the world. Research is divided into the following: 1- Cultural context from a social and historical perspective. 2- Administrative Subsidiarity and decision-making. 3- General objectives and principles of cultural policies. 4- Current topics debated in cultural policy development. 5- Main legal texts in the cultural field. 6- Financing of culture events and institutions. 7- Cultural institutions and new partnerships. 8- Supporting creativity and collaborations. This survey has been conducted in 2009 and 2010 by the researchers Rita Azar and Watfaa Hamadi. The original material of the current survey is found below in black.
