9.1.4. UEFA REFEREES' CENTRE

Referees and assistant referees make a major con- tribution to the smooth running of matches during the finals. Our objective is therefore to offer these people the best possible conditions for the preparation and fulfilment of their tasks throughout the duration of the tournament. This means firstly a referees' centre that meets the highest 9 standards in terms of infrastructure, and secondly a

transport plan that makes access to the eight play- ing venues as straightforward as possible. We are proposing to UEFA - and specifically to the Referees Committee - to accommodate the referees and their assistants in the Grand Hotel Vil- la Castagnola au Lac, situated in Lugano, Switzer- land (Lugano is one of the major towns in the Canton of Ticino, one of the Italian-speaking re- gions of Switzerland).This region is known as the sunshine capital of Switzerland and boasts a Mediterranean climate. Long sunlight hours and pleasant temperatures are particularly beneficial for staging the UEFA referees course in advance of the finals at the same location, in February/March 2008.
