Paris Le Meurice PARIS LE MEURICE Two day itinerary: Active Paris may be the most populous city in France, but among a sea of historical sites and museums you’ll find plenty of green spaces and waterways breaking up the urban landscape. From golf courses and imperial parks to vast forests where hiking and cycling opportunities abound, there’s an array of active attractions to discover without leaving the confines of the city. Experience the best sports and leisure opportunities in Paris with this two-day itinerary. Day one Start the day by crossing over Rue de Rivoli to the Jardin des Tuileries, directly opposite the hotel. JARDIN DES TUILERIES 113 Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris Jardin des Tuileries is a beautiful green space bordering the River Seine. The garden carries the imperial ethos of the Palais des Tuileries, which once stood there, and attracts visitors for picturesque walks and pony rides along its luscious avenues. At one end of the park lies the Louvre and at the other the Place de la Concorde, so it’s also at the cultural heart of the city. Hail a taxi for a 20-minute drive to Patinoire Pailleron. PATINOIRE PAILLERON T: 01 40 40 27 70 | 30 Rue Edouard Pailleron, 75019 Paris Cool off with a trip to Patinoire Pailleron, Paris’ premier ice rink. The 800sqm rink is open for lunchtime, afternoon and evening sessions almost every day and is popular with ice skaters and ice hockey players. Visitors can rent skates and equipment, with open sessions and supervised practices available for all age groups and levels. Then, take another 20-minute drive to Parc Floral de Paris. PARC FLORAL DE PARIS T: 01 49 57 25 50 | Bois de Vincennes, Route de la Pyramide, 75012 Paris An ideal place to enjoy a leisurely lunch or a relaxing afternoon, Parc Floral de Paris is a park and botanical garden that’s full of wildlife and plants. It’s located within the Bois de Vincennes, the second largest public park in Paris. Visitors can enjoy walks and mini golf in Parc Floral de Paris, before exploring the wider park for extra activities such as boating, cycling and horse riding. To reach Fontainebleau Forest, it’s a 45-minute drive from Parc Floral de Paris. The Dorchester, London | 45 Park Lane, London | Coworth Park, Ascot | Le Meurice, Paris | Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Paris Hotel Principe di Savoia, Milan | Hotel Eden, Rome | The Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills | Hotel Bel-Air, Los Angeles | Dubai (opening 2020) FONTAINEBLEAU FOREST T: 01 60 74 99 95 | Fontainebleau Tourist Office, 4 Rue Royale, 77300 To the southeast of Paris lies the beautiful Fontainebleau Forest, a highlight for keen hikers with 25,000 hectares of space to enjoy and numerous trails to choose from, including 300km of simple signposted routes. Explore your chosen trail on foot, by bike or on horseback, or test your climbing skills in the forest with rock climbing and bouldering. Finish the day at Golf de Fontainebleau, located within the Fontainebleau Forest. GOLF DE FONTAINEBLEAU T: 01 64 22 22 95 | Fontainebleau Forest, Route d’Orléans, 77300 Fontainebleau Golf de Fontainebleau is one of the oldest and highest-ranked golf courses in France, consistently taking a spot in the top 10 in Europe. The course is challenging as while it’s only just over 6,000m in length, its greens are small and guarded so players must think on their feet. Watch out for wild deer, which occasionally venture out of the dense pine forest bordering the course. To get back to the hotel, it’s a one-hour drive from Golf de Fontainebleau. Day two Begin the day at Piscine Pontoise, located a 15-minute drive south of the river, or a 35-minute riverside walk away. L’ESPACE AQUATIQUE AT LE QUARTIER SPORT T: 01 55 42 77 88 | 19 Rue de Pontoise, 75005 Paris The swimming pool at Le Quartier Sport, located in a 1930s-era listed building, is an excellent spot for an early morning dip. The striking 33m pool is flooded with natural sunlight that shines in from its art deco glass ceiling. Hire one of the old-fashioned serviced cabins for easy and private changing and enjoy a free swim, or book a swimming lesson or aqua fitness class for a more structured experience. Next, take a 10-minute drive or a 15-minute walk to Jardin de Luxembourg. JARDIN DE LUXEMBOURG T: 01 42 34 20 00 | Rue de Médicis - Rue de Vaugirard, 75006 Paris Created on the request of Queen Marie de Medici in 1612, Jardin de Luxembourg is a beautiful 25-hectare park split into stunning English and French-style landscaped gardens. Spend a morning exploring the forests, orchards and greenhouses filled with orchids, and discover a wealth of statues and monuments such as the famous Medici fountain. There are also tennis courts for those who fancy a game. To reach the next location, the Bois de Boulogne, take a 20-minute drive. The Dorchester, London | 45 Park Lane, London | Coworth Park, Ascot | Le Meurice, Paris | Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Paris Hotel Principe di Savoia, Milan | Hotel Eden, Rome | The Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills | Hotel Bel-Air, Los Angeles | Dubai (opening 2020) BOIS DE BOULOGNE T: 033 1 53 92 82 82 | 75016 Paris A former royal hunting ground, Bois de Boulogne is now a huge public park that’s a playground for those seeking leisure and sporting opportunities. One of the most popular activities in the 850-hectare park is rowing on Lac Inférieur. There are also myriad walking routes, cycle trails and bridleways for horse riding, as well as a hippodrome and the famous Longchamp Racecourse. Hail a taxi for a 20-minute drive to the final stop on the itinerary, Aerokart. AEROKART T: 01 30 25 71 90 | 199-203 Route de Pontoise, 95100 Argenteuil If skydiving from an airplane seems too scary a feat to attempt, enjoy a trial run at Aerokart. The sports facility offers tunnel skydiving, which gives participants the freedom and adrenaline of free fall but in the safety of a wind tunnel, where instructors are on hand to guide divers into the correct ‘flying’ position. There’s also an indoor go-kart circuit that’s popular with racing enthusiasts. Then, take a 40-minute drive to get from Aerokart to the exit of the Dupleix Métro station (line 6), where the bike tour begins. FAT TIRE TOURS T: +33 1 82 88 80 96 | 24 Rue Edgar Faure, 75015 Paris The Paris Night Bike Tour lasts over four hours and takes in everything from the nightlife of the Latin Quarter and the bustle of the Pont des Arts to the sights of the Île de la Cité (including a stop for a de rigueur scoop of Berthillon’s famous ice cream). The tour also includes a boat cruise along the Seine, where you can watch as the city lights twinkle as you sip a glass of wine. To get back to the hotel, take a 15-minute taxi ride. All journey times are approximate and subject to variation. The Dorchester, London | 45 Park Lane, London | Coworth Park, Ascot | Le Meurice, Paris | Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Paris Hotel Principe di Savoia, Milan | Hotel Eden, Rome | The Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills | Hotel Bel-Air, Los Angeles | Dubai (opening 2020).

  • PARIS LE MEURICE One Day Itinerary: Romance Paris and Romance Have Been Synonymous for Centuries
PARIS LE MEURICE One day itinerary: Romance Paris and romance have been synonymous for centuries. While the idea of an amorous retreat to the City of Light may not be terribly revolutionary, it’s a cliché for a reason. Whether wandering in centuries-old public parks or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through the city, couples eager for both intimacy and adventure have much to discover with this one-day itinerary. Start the day with a romantic carriage ride through the city with Paris Calèches, just 15 minutes from the hotel by taxi. PARIS CALÈCHES T: 06 62 20 24 88 | East Pillar of the Eiffel Tower, 5 Avenue Anatole France, 75007 Paris A calèche – or a private, horse-drawn carriage – is one of the lovelier ways to take in the Paris sights. For couples looking for a relaxed journey past some of the city’s most famous landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower and Champ de Mars, Paris Calèches provides an intimate way to explore (accompanied, if you so choose, by a bottle of Champagne and sweet treats). After your carriage ride, take a taxi for the 20-minute journey to the Jardin du Luxembourg. JARDIN DU LUXEMBOURG Rue de Médicis-Rue de Vaugirard, 75006 Paris Unfolding across almost 25 hectares, the magnificent Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the city’s most beloved public spaces, and has been since Marie de Medici created it in the early 17th century. Comprising English and French-style gardens, orchid-filled greenhouses, apiaries, orchards, ponds, and sculptures, the park offers plenty of space to get lost in during a romantic stroll.

  • Place Saint-Michel the Place Saint-Michel Is
Place Saint-Michel The Place Saint-Michel is simple – a triangle between two streets, uniform buildings along both, designed by the same architect, a walk of smooth cobblestone. The centerpiece is St. Michael defeating a devil; far above them are four statues symbolizing the four cardinal virtues of prudence, fortitude, temperance, and justice. This monument came to be because of the 1848 Revolution and a cholera epidemic in Paris that followed it which killed thousands. This idea of abstract concepts given human form had been popular during the Revolution, the big one, representing the kind of big virtues – like the Four Cardinal Virtues – that everyone could strive for, instead of a single human being whose actions and legacy would turn people against each other. Simultaneous with the creation of Place Saint-Michel, Napoleon III’s renovation brought the Boulevard Saint-Michel into being, and that is the next part of our walk. Facing the fountain with the river at your back, walk on Boulevard Saint-Michel, it’s the street to your left. Walk away from the river along that street. Ultimately, you’ll be turning left on Rue des Écoles, but it’ll be about five minutes to get there, and you can listen to the next track on the way. Boulevard Saint-Michel The character of the street you’re on – wide-open space lined with trees and long, harmonious buildings, plus, often, a view of some landmark in the distance – was a central part of the renovation plan, or the Haussmann plan, as it’s also known.

Angkor Redux: Colonial Exhibitions in France Dawn Rooney offers tantalising glimpses of late 19th-early 20th century exhibitions that brought the glory of Angkor to Europe. “I saw it first at the Paris Exhibition of 1931, a pavilion built of concrete treated to look like weathered stone. It was the outstanding feature of the exhibition, and at evening was flood-lit F or many, such as Claudia Parsons, awareness of the with yellow lighting which turned concrete to Angkorian kingdom and its monumental temples came gold (Fig. 1). • THE DECORATION and FURNISHING of the CITY No
THE DECORATION AND FURNISHING OF THE CITY No. 5.--Fountains 'Vater is an essential attribute to every landscape or architectural composrtion, No park or garden is strictly complete which does not possess its cascade, fountain, basin, and canal, and no city which pretends to be artistically embellished is fully adorned without waterways, rond points, drinking fountains, and jets d'eau. The city which may fitly display fountains must abound in pleasure places and be something more than a commercial town. It must have prospered and developed beyond this elementary stage. The purpose of the Iountain is non-utilitarian; it transcends all mundane ideas.· It is a work of art set up for art's. sake alone. 'Vater is animate, and a fountain is a living thing; little wonder that poets and artists ever people them with gods, demi-goels, animals, and nymphs. Schemes for the beautiful treatment of water have ever been created during the great artistic epochs of the world. Ancient Rome was a city running with water, but the fountains of Rome have long ago been obliterated and lost, though numerous remaine of sculptured baths and basins, spouts and vases have been preserved. Probably the earliest of the fountains which are still running with water and which are of greatest importance to us as such to-day, are the Italian fountains of the 15th and 16th centuries, most of which are to be seen in the gardens of the villas around Florence and Rome. From the highest terrace of these gardeIls water pours forth from a chateau d'eau, a grotto, art archway, or from the cleft in a rock; it becomes a cascade and is artfully.., broken into a series of falls ; it pirouettes, tumbles, and empties itself into a deep pool, then, disappearing it reappears on the lowest terrace as a jet, or as a thousand jets throwing UF) glistening spray, and finally settles in a "bain des Dieux." SUCll is the treatment of water in the world's oldest gardens and parks; particularly fine examples are to be seen in the gardens of the Villa Torlonia and in the Villa d'Este.
