Concert Program Notes Directions: Write program notes for each piece that was scheduled to be performed on our next concert. What are program notes? Program notes give the audience concise information about the piece of music they are about to hear so that they have a greater understanding of the musical ideas that are being conveyed. Please include the following information in your program notes: ○ Composer and Lyricist- Dates of birth/death, education, other famous works, and awards. ○ Text- Translation of the text, significance, and origin. ○ Cultural significance- What culture does this piece come from, specific musical ideas of that culture, religious importance (if any) ○ Specific information about the piece- Who/what was it written for, other interesting information. Below you will find an example of program notes for the piece In the Bleak Midwinter: In the Bleak Midwinter is a traditional Christmas carol based on the poem by Christina Rosetti (1830-1894). After Rosetti’s death the poem was set to one of Gustav Holst’s (1874-1934) choral settings entitled “Cranham”, and published in the English Hymnal. Holst was an English 20th century composer who was well known for his works in both orchestral and choral music. His most famous orchestral work The Planets epitomizes his strengths as a composer. Holst’s original arrangement of In the Bleak Midwinter has inspired other well known choral composers like Benjamin Britten and Bob Chilcott to arrange versions of Rosetti’s hauntingly beautiful poem. It started with the Carnival Service held at St Catherine’s and escalated from there, with all sorts of different things happening all over town in different venues, including churches, church halls and church carparks! Concerts, plays, puppet shows, monologues, busking….it was all going on! The Fringe Book Bus was parked in St Catherine’s carpark, there was a performance of the “Isle of Wight Suite” and the Ventnor Guitar Club and Local History Society combined for “Playing with History”.

The Carol and Its Context in Twentieth-century England Sean Vogt loria in excelsis deo, et in terra G pax hominibus (“Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to all people”), Luke 2:14, was likely the fi rst carol ever heard, sung by the angels over the fi elds of Bethlehem. It would be more than a millennium before the next documented account of carol singing. In this case, it happened in Greccio, Italy, where St. Francis made the fi rst Christ- mas crèche (crib) in 1223, in response to the Manichaeism1 of the eleventh and twelfth centuries—recreating the stable, even obtaining an ox and ass. People from around the village began to gather around St. Francis’s biblical re-creation. As a result, the people “poured out their hearts in praises to God; and the friars sang new canticles…”2 The dawn of the Protestant Reforma- tion brought carol singing—amongst a myriad of other activities—to an abrupt halt. The Reformation during the six- teenth and seventeenth centuries re- sulted in a fragmented church. The Lu- therans viewed the feast of Christmas as a popish abuse. The pieces on this program were selected to offer up musical moments of preparation and reflection in the anticipation and joy of knowing that Christ will come again. The Christmas Suite, by Charles Callahan, features several movements based on Christmas Carols, notably Greensleeves (What Child is This), Silent Night, and the Christmas Rondel which features snipits of The First Nowell, Puer natus in Bethlehem, and Adeste Fideles. The first movement, “Fanfare,” heralds tunes such as Joy to the World, Angels we Have Heard on High, and From Heaven Above. The beautiful Letourneau organ provides a hefty reed chorus that does justice to this work. Savior of the Nations Come, or by the German name “Nun komm der Leiden heiland,” was written and originally attributed to Saint Ambrose (349-397).

The service you will experience tonight draws on a century-long tradition of King’s College, Cambridge in England. Featuring voices of all ages, this service tells the story of God’s faithfulness to His people through the course of history. The first imaginings of a Christmas Lessons and Carols service took place in Truro, England in 1880 in a wooden shed that was serving as cathedral while a new church was being constructed. The Bishop of Truro, E.W. Benson, wanted to create a service that told the story of the Messiah clearly in a way that uneducated townspeople would understand. He wanted to make the story of Christ’s birth, the prophecies that foretold it, and the stories of the first witnesses, simple and approachable. To this day, the narrative nature of Christmas Lessons and Carols is one of its most enduring virtues. By 1918 when King’s College, Cambridge designed their Lessons and Carols service, and again the following year, the readings and structure underwent some changes. Since 1928, King’s College has broadcast this service, and it can now be heard around the world every Christmas Eve. The service you will hear tonight is closely linked, in form, to the King’s College service. One of the distinctive features of the English cathedral music tradition is that the highest lines of music are sung by children.

She received her formal education from Louisiana State University and Boston University. She studied composition with John Williams, Bill Conti and Jerry Goldsmith, to name a few. Julie is an accomplished performer on piano and horn, but her first love is composition. She began playing the piano at the age of three and had published her first piece at the age of nine. In 1985, she began composing, orchestrating, and conducting music for television and films.

“IN A BLEAK MIDWINTER” (1872) BY CHRISTINA ROSSETTI (1830- 1894) Version: 12, 13, 14, 15 December 2020 Christina Rossetti, in 1872, wrote these words in response to a request from the magazine Scribner’s Monthly for a Christmas poem. The music is “Cranham” by Gustav T. Holst (1906). Musical performances: The Queen’s Six with Richard Pinel, Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming (2017); Sarah McLachlan, Wintersong (2006); Poella, In the Bleak Midwinter (Piano & Poetry), (2019); James Taylor, James Taylor at Christmas (2006); Voces8, Winter (2016). “Christina Rossetti wrote huge volumes of religious and secular poetry. It is helpful to remember that she wrote poems on Classical subjects as well as Christian; her vision was shaped by Italian masters like Dante, as much as by emergent Anglican pieties, and she wrote in Italian as well as in English. She lived through the emergent heights of the Victorian Empire (dying in 1894) as part of one of the most prominent artistic families in the land; if by 1872, when ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ was published, her poetic attentions were increasingly and firmly fixed on devotional verse and subjects, she also had a rich cultural and personal grasp of life’s realities.
