My sincere thanks to Justin Gilbert for stepping into the role of Honorary Secretary this season and together with Matt Rose ensuring our finances are in a sound position the Association is in a healthy position for the future.

The past season was very demanding but also successful once again for all involved. It was a season that welcomed new innovations with the inaugural Sommers Cup Twenty20 competition being played and enjoyed by all participants.

Coffs Harbour hosted the NSW Country Colts Carnival in February with several local lads helping North Coastal Zone to victory. With eight teams and support staff being accommodated at Park Beach and Sawtell Holiday Parks we called upon all clubs to assist with catering and daily ground preparation. My sincere thanks to all volunteers who assisted over the three days whether you cooked breakfast, put out boundary markers, assisted with pitch covers during the inclement weather, or canteen duties as your support was valuable to a successful event. As a result we have been asked to host the Carnival again in November 2014.

Following on from the carnival the and ground preparations at Richardson Park have been recognised by NSW Country Cricket with Arthur Smart being awarded the NSW Country Curator of the Year. Congratulations to Arthur from all in Coffs Harbour for his efforts over a number of years which have assisted Coffs Harbour Cricket to be the chosen venue for most North Coast trials and representative fixtures.

Coffs Harbour Cricket also appreciates immensely the work done by Ricky Welsh at both Fitzroy Oval and Brelsford Park together with the assistance he provides to the Coffs Harbour City Council staff at Coffs Coast Leisure Park. Russell Fensom and his crew always provide us with the grounds and in their best possible state each weekend despite the number of other events which take place on these fields. Often maligned by some who are not aware of the political climate within Council, the CHCC Sports Unit provide us with a valuable support service that is continually negotiated, often week by week.

The recent opening of the Regional Skate Park has provided us with yet another hurdle at Brelsford Park. It remains to be seen how compatible cricket and skateboarding will be in the future but I have lodged a request for sightscreens, signage to attempt to keep participants and bystanders off the playing field, as well as regular litter patrols to ensure that rubbish is contained.

I would like to pass on a vote of thanks to the Coffs Harbour Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association for their contribution to our game week in and week out. It can often be a thankless task but also very rewarding when a match is completed without incident. In particular I congratulate Brian Kennedy for his involvement in Coffs Harbour Cricket and North Coast Cricket. Brian has advised the Umpires that he will not be standing for re-election to the Presidency after decades of service to the game. I believe that he will still officiate on the field but it is time for “The Fox” and his wife Maureen to take a break from administration duties.

There are a multitude of people to thank for their time and efforts to assist the Association run smoothly each week. These people perform duties behind the scenes to ensure the statistics are up to date, our Year Book is produced as a quality online document, and scores are recorded correctly on the MyCricket website. Without naming them I am sure that we all appreciate their individual and combined efforts throughout the season.

Congratulations to all our award winners, both individual and team, details of which are in the Year Book which will be available in the near future so I will not elaborate in this report. Special mention must go to Luke Corlis who had a stellar season both locally and at representative level. Luke was named in the ACT under 17 team after strong performances in City – NSW Country fixtures throughout the year. The ACT team effectively is a NSW 2nd XI.

I anticipate another busy season in 2014/2015 with an agenda full of events both on and off the field. The Association will need the support of every single member to maintain our success in the year ahead.

Finally I would like to mention the Kookaburra Ball allocation will continue for the next two season and it is hoped that all clubs will come on board to purchase cricket balls through the Association.

COFFS HARBOUR DISTRICT CRICKET UMPIRES & SCORERS ASSOC. INCORPORATED

PRESIDENTS REPORT 2013-14

This is my final year compiling this report as I am stepping down as President of the Umpire’s Association. On the whole I have enjoyed the past 30+ years I have been at the helm, overseeing many changes to the rules and regulations of cricket umpiring, throughout this time. I am now looking forward to enjoying my umpiring.

Organising the new season requires long hours of meetings, training days and nights and pre-match preparations, for both the Cricket Association and the Umpire’s and Scorer’s Association, the committees involved in all of this are numerous, many thanks for the generosity shown by the volunteering of time and effort - it is much appreciated.

A special thank you to our Junior Association, you are fortunate to have a very enthusiastic committee and coaches, with interested and involved parents guiding our next generation of senior players.

To those who go the next step, in inter-district and representative sides, both senior and junior levels, it is always a big ask, but it is because of this effort that our sport continues to grow.

To the many winners of trophies and awards, congratulations. To the runners up, there is always another season. The Bill Rae Memorial Medal went to Justin Gilbert, a worthy winner.

The Umpires also put in many hours of training, travel and commitment, monthly meetings where rules and their interpretations are discussed and debated are very educational, this is where the benchmark is set for new and junior umpires.

To our Secretary Matt Campbell, and Treasurer Paul Harris, congratulations on a job well done, we do appreciate you.

I wish the incoming committee all the best for the upcoming season.

Yours in Sport.

Brian Kennedy. Brian Kennedy Hon. President.

The President calls stumps by Phil Crofts (Historical Committee & CHDCA Life Member)

After more than 30 years, Brian Kennedy has called ‘stumps’ in his role as President of the Coffs Harbour Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association. An absolute testament to Brian’s devotion to cricket, his service to this vital part of the game is nothing short of amazing, and it will be strange to see a new face holding the gavel at the ‘umpies’ meetings.

Brian came to the job in 1982, at a somewhat awkward time for the then‐association, and his clear and steady manner soon had the CH Cricket Umpires Association (as it was then) on a steady foundation. He was able to find some new members; he coached and mentored them; some got through to earn their NSW State Badge. Brian was there to forge the affiliation with the NSW state body, all in a quiet statesmanlike manner.

There is no doubt that he has had some solid allies in promoting the cause of umpiring. The Bill Rae Medal celebrates the input from an enthusiastic secretary (sadly now deceased), and Ken Robinson’s work, most prominently as the umpires’ Training Officer, has kept the umpires at the forefront of the new developments of umpiring. And of course when it came to links with umpiring in Sydney, Brian was aided by the regular visits from Arthur Watson, a long‐time active member of the Sydney umpiring fraternity.

But it was Brian who was always the face of local cricket umpiring. He travelled the length and breadth of the North Coast to umpire inter‐district; it seemed he was nearly always available to do those various mid‐week games (including some interstate fixtures); and he was a regular part of the Tooheys Cup and Lite Ice games.

Keep in mind that in his earlier umpiring days, Brian was also a player: an opening batsman who absolutely treasured his wicket. West Coffs CC made a milestone of his retirement at the end of the 2001‐02 season. Also note that Brian became CHDCA Inter‐district Weatherman in 1981 There’s 33 years of service – just think of those early Sunday morning phone calls!

And of course, despite his low‐profile manner, Brian has had some recognition. He became a CHDCA Life Member in August 1987 (heck, he was just getting started!); he’s a life member at West Coffs CC, a life member of the CH Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association. I suspect however that the recognition that gives him the most joy is the award from Cricket Australia, for 50 years service as a volunteer.

As for individuals, I also suspect Brian has had great pleasure in noting the rise of Darren Goodger, from a lowly junior umpire in Grafton, to one of the senior umpires in the NSW body. Darren now has several years of experience at first class cricket, as well as the hurly‐burly of Sydney first grade cricket, and Brian’s mentoring in those earlier years with Darren would appear to have stood him in good stead.

Brian has indicated he will continue as an umpire for this season, but those Umpires’ meetings just won’t be the same. CHDCA *** HONOUR BOARD

AND COUNTY CRICKET By Phillip Crofts (CHDCA Historical Committee & Life Member) In southern England is a small village named Hambledon: the nearest villages are Clanfield, Chidden and Denmead, and it is some 25 kilometres or so south to Portsmouth. From all reports, Hambledon is not dissimilar to thousands of other English villages, but it has a special claim that makes it unique in cricket’s annals. It is the Hambledon Cricket Club that was responsible for giving cricket an organisational framework in the 18th century, and that framework paved the way for the English cricket development. Hambledon CC is the oldest surviving cricket club in England, although it is not the oldest club – Dartford was certainly in existence some 30 years earlier, Slindon in the 1740s was basically the Sussex county team. The earliest inter-county match was played in 1709, and Kent in the 1740s or Hampshire in the 1750s and 1760s were very strong. Indeed strong enough to be regularly matched against All-England (the Seven Years War from 1756-63 interfered with the County games, as did the Napoleonic Wars from 1803 to 1815. In fact there were no County games from 1797 to 1824, and the official Country Championship was not instituted until 1890.) In 1739, Kent defeated the All-England team by a ‘few notches’, while from 1847 to 1856, there was also an annual clash between an All-England XI and a United All- England XI. But it is Hambledon CC that cricket buffs look back to when discussing the rise of cricket as a sport in the 18th century. It actually started life prior to 1850 as a local parish cricket team: in 1756 it played against Dartford in a series of 3 games. The team was also referred to sometimes as ‘Squire Land’s Club’, after Squire Land who had apparently been the chief organiser of cricket matches prior to the formation of Hambledon CC. By the end of the 1770s, Hambledon CC was the foremost cricket club in England. It was strongly supported by noblemen and country gentry, some of whom played, but whose main support came in the form of employing professional players to boost the club. Those supporters were also very keen as gamblers. However, history views Hambledon CC more as a social club, and then more as an organiser of matches. Its status is also clouded by the fact that it is often referred to as representing 2 counties, such as the time Kent played Hampshire and Sussex in 1772. It is noted that the terms ‘Hampshire and Sussex’ and ‘Hambledon’ were considered interchangeable. These days, Hambledon is part of Surrey. The Hambledon matches were originally played on Broadhalfpenny Down. In 1782, after the military had taken over that site and other local areas, the club moved to Windmill Down. That ground unfortunately was rather exposed, as well as having a significant slope, and after a few seasons, the club moved to Ridge Meadow (about half a mile - 800 metres - from the village) which is still Hambledon’s home ground. In 2007, the clubhouse was burnt to the ground, but donations and support from all -2- over the world have seen the clubhouse rebuilt. (These days, Broadhalfpenny Down is still a cricket field, home ground to the Broadhalfpenny Brigands CC.) The other building that has been such an integral part of the club is Clanfield’s Bat and Ball Hotel, opposite the old Broadhalfpenny Down ground, and about 800m from Ridge Meadow. Richard Nyren was licensee at the Bat and Ball, and also Hambledon CC club captain in its halcyon days. He was also one of their better-performed players, along with the likes of , Thomas Brett, David Harris, Tom Taylor, Billy Beldham and Tom Walker. Like most hotels, the Bat and Ball Hotel is part of a hotel chain, and in the 1990s, management saw fit to strip the cricket mementoes from the hotel. It took over 10 years, but finally common sense prevailed, and in 2006, the mementoes were restored, and the Bat and Ball resumed its unique place in cricket history. It was John Nyren, son of publican Richard, who wrote the first significant cricket book ‘The Cricketers of My Time’. First serialised in ‘The Town’ newspaper in 1832, it was produced as a book in 1833, while the first Wisden came out in 1864, and the first coaching manual ‘The Book, by Thomas Boxall dates to the early 1880s. However, in the 1780s Hambledon’s days of prominence were coming to a close, as the focus of power moved from the rural areas to London. It was the establishment of Lords as the home of the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1787 that led to the MCC becoming the governing power for English cricket. After that, Hambledon reverted to a traditional village club, and in 1796, it actually went into voluntary retirement. But it came back with renewed spirit, and these days is a mecca for those sad people called ‘cricket tragics’. Looking back over history, there is no doubt that Hambledon CC’s nickname as the ‘cradle of cricket’ is well earnt. In its memorable years, it laid the basis for modern cricket: the introduction and refining of the Laws, including such factors as having 3 stumps (not the old 2 stumps!), length bowling, round-arm bowling and the regulation of bat width. It can also boast a proud record of having played an All-England side on 51 occasions, and winning 29 of them. These days, it is an active club in the village cricket league, and is rightly proud of its place in cricket history. But to finish up, I would be remiss in not drawing attention to Hambledon CC’s official formal toast: 6. To the Queen’s/ King’s) mother; 5. His/ Her Majesty; 4. The Hambledon Club; 3. Cricket; 2. The Immortal Memory of Madge; and 1. The President. (Let it be known that ‘Madge’ is not a who but a what; it transpires that ‘Madge’ was a crude reference to a certain part of a lady’s anatomy.) There stands a club and a village with cricket heritage!

Coffs fight back against Tweed to reach round of 16 in SCG Country Cup 25 November 2013

CHARGING TO THE NEXT ROUND: Coffs Harbour beat Tweed Valley on Sunday to advance to the round of 16 in this summer's statewide SCG Country Cup.

COFFS Harbour overcame a shaky start to progress through to the round of 16 in the knockout SCG Country Cup. Facing a determined Tweed Valley outfit, Coffs Harbour's representative cricketers slumped to be 5-47 early on before a rescue mission from the tail order set the home team on the path to victory. The final three batsmen on the list top scored for Coffs Harbour with Trent Statham, Julian Hulbert and Luke Corlis making 27, 30 and 29 respectively. An impressive 66-run final wicket stand helped steer Coffs Harbour to a total of 184. After the heavy rain the night before, runs for both teams hard to come by due to a damp pitch with little bounce but Tweed Valley made an excellent start to its run chase with a 57-run opening stand. The bowling of Hulbert and Raj Sandhu turned the match Coffs Harbour's way as shortly after the first wicket fell, Tweed found themselves struggling at 5-68. Trent Dierick cleaned up the tail to grab a personal haul of five wickets and dismiss Tweed for 129 in the 40th over. Coffs batsman Matt Rose said his team has all the right ingredients to make a solid charge this year. "I think the combination of a few old heads mixed with some new young guys coming through will make our team pretty strong this year," Rose said. "Against Tweed, we've hit form at just the right time. It's probably the strongest batting line-up we've had in years." Coffs Harbour will now play Tamworth in the round of 16 on December 15.

ROUND 4

Batting is Kris Halloran with Trent Statham bowling at the Coffs Vs Tamworth. SCG Country Cup Cricket played at Coff Leisure Park.

COFFS Harbour's SCG Country Cup campaign ended yesterday as two-time winners Tamworth took advantage of bowling first on a damp wicket in a low scoring affair. Batting first at the Coffs Coast Sport and Leisure Park, Coffs Harbour was behind the eight-ball early when it slumped to 4-12. There wasn't much more resistance after that with the home side dismissed for only 76 in the 33rd over. From there on in, it was Tamworth's game for the taking, with only PBBC Colts player Trent Statham concerning Tamworth claiming 3-31 off his 7.2 overs. Coffs Harbour Captain, Russell Gardner, said he was proud of his team's effort this year and was looking forward to working with some of the young talent for next year's tournament. "All I can say is that we've got some very bright prospects in Coffs that can move forward for us next year," Gardner said. "We've had a couple of really good wins over the year and that will hopefully get the players interested and wanting to play for Coffs next year."

Ian Slapp was the only bright light on a miserable afternoon for the hosts, bringing 40 runs to the scoreboard. "Unfortunately we lost the match, but we lost due to a few combinations - Tamworth won the toss and decided to bowl as well as some heavy showers the previous night which didn't do too well for our top order," the captain said.

"As the day went on, the pitch became a little harder, but the total we got wasn't going to be anywhere near enough to defend."

Lower Clarence into final after fighting success over Coffs 29th Jan 2014

LOWER Clarence has guaranteed a berth in the 2013- 14 North Coast Cricket Council final with a game to spare.

The representative side held on for a 19-run win against Coffs Harbour at Harwood Oval on Monday to continue its formidable run this season. After reaching the VB Country Plate semi-finals for the second consecutive year, Lower Clarence is now two from two in the NCCC inter-district competition and plays Clarence River for the minor premiership at Ellem Oval this Sunday.

However, it took a lower-order revival led by Matt Farrell and a Ben McMahon five-wicket haul to ensure Lower Clarence's breathing space.

When Coffs Harbour's left-arm seamer Julian Hulbert clean bowled Geoff Simmons (0) third ball of the match it set the tone for the hosts as they slumped to 5 for 20. "We just didn't see off the left-arm opener," Lower Clarence captain Luke Many said. "He swung it around and bowled good balls.

"In most of our minds the game was over after half an hour. But when Matty Farrell went in he got behind the good balls and picked the right one to put away."

Hulbert took 5 for 18 and could have inflicted more damage had he not broken down during his sixth over. Many (8) was dismissed with the score 6 for 38 which brought Farrell, who has scored plenty of runs opening the batting for Iluka this season, to the crease.

He soon lost Brandon Honeybrook (14) but then combined with Zac Honeybrook (13) and Harry Nicholson (20) to top score with 65.

Nicholson kept going and with Tim McMahon (9no) put on what would turn out to be a match winning 30-run 10th wicket partnership to finish a respectable 173 off 47 overs. "The young blokes have learnt the game's never finished til it's finished," the veteran Tim McMahon said. "The longer a partnership goes the more the other team drops off and the closer you are to a score you can defend.

"Harry and I noticed a definite mood change out there at around the 40-over mark." In reply, Coffs Harbour got off to a flier getting stuck into the opening bowlers and aided by a surplus of wides. But first-change bowler Ben McMahon quickly put a dent in the run chase, finishing with figures of 5 for 47 off 10 overs including two maidens.

The visitors were not going to die wondering, surging at almost a run a ball and within sight of victory when they lost their last wicket on 154 after 28 overs.

"They teed off against us," Many said.

"But Ben tightened it up. At 5 for 100 at drinks it felt all square. "They hit 21 off Ben's next over and we were right under the pump again."

A Corey Kempshall direct hit run out removed the danger man just in time. Kempshall took a wicket the following over before Ben McMahon completed his bag with the last ball of his spell to end the match.

Over 40's cricket match at Ellem Oval on Sunday. Photo Debrah Novak / The Daily Examiner Debrah Novak ENSBEY, Pardoe and Chevalley are household names in CRCA Premier League. But it was the generation of yesteryear on show at Ellem Oval yesterday as Clarence River claimed the NCCC Over- 40s title.

Chasing 159, the middle order set out to make light work of the total, until a Bruce Mackay hat-trick almost inspired Coffs to victory. But CRCA held firm to scrape home by a single wicket. Described by Craig Woods as "old blokes held together by sticky tape having fun", the match had a jovial atmosphere full of banter.

"Over-40s, 40 overs, retire at 40. Everything about it is 40," Woods said. But it's after the game the real festivities take place. "We're a group of old blokes who still love the game and want to have a hit," CRCA captain Paul Ensbey said. "The boys tend to get pretty rowdy after the game, particularly against Coffs, they enjoy a beer."

The concept started in the late 80s between CRCA and Lower Clarence before Coffs and Nambucca joined later. Most players still play club cricket, including a handful in Premier League, such as Coutts Crossing's leading run scorer this season, Noel O'Connell. He made 36 batting at number six for Clarence River yesterday. "I enjoy it. It's more relaxed," O'Connell said. "It's about second grade standard. Still some good bowlers there." All money raised throughout the competition goes towards the Cancer Council.

The inaugural meeting of the North Coast Cricket Council was held at the Coffs Harbour School of Arts on 14 September 1946 with a resolution moved by the late John F. Towells.

The resolution read “that in order to foster country cricket on the central North Coast, the Orara River Cricket Association favours the formation of a Council of Associations.

At the meeting there were representatives from the Upper Clarence, Lower Clarence, Orara River, Coffs Harbour, Bellingen River and Nambucca.

Apologies were received from Dorrigo, Kempsey and Hastings Associations who also indicated their support.

At the meeting it was resolved that a competition be conducted in two zones, North & South. The Original associations in each zone were: NORTHERN. Orara River, Upper Clarence , Back Row LtoR: Henry Ellem (Coffs Harbour), Col Wisely (Bellingen River), Noel Brennan (Clarence River), Lower Clarence and Coffs Harbour Jack Towels (Mng. Coffs Harbour), Wally Endicott (Clarence River), Tom Ennis (Nambucca), Roy Ennis (Nambucca) Middle: Lance Titcome (Coffs Harbour), Vic Crombie (Coffs Harbour), Russell Ellem (Coffs Harbour), Lionel Fowler SOUTHERN: Dorrigo, Bellingen River, (Coffs Harbour), Noel Grayson (Lower Clarence River), Eric Sutter (Clarence River) Richie Barnes (Clarence River) Nambucca River, Upper Macleay, Front: Ron Elder (Coffs Harbour) Cecil Towells (Coffs Harbour) Kempsey.

Mr Jack F Towells was the instigator of the Council and President for the first two years. Upon his death in 1948 the “John Towells Memorial Shield” was introduced to be played for by Associations First X1 teams. This shield has been restored and is now kept in the CHDCA Trophy Cabinet in Coffs Harbour.

In 1957 NSWCA brought in boundary changes that saw the formation of the North Coast Cricket Council and Mid North Coast Cricket Council as we know them today. The North Coast Cricket Council participated in Country week in Sydney from its beginning which was a chance for cricketers to further their expertise and experience. A new Twenty20 competition involving six completely new teams and a pre-tournament draft is set to swing into action in Coffs Harbour.

EXCITEMENT is in the air for local cricketers as a new Twenty20 concept will be in action over the next two weeks. The Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association (CHDCA) announced recently the new tournament is well into its advanced stages of planning and that it was committed to the tournament.

Taking place on January 18 and 25 at Leisure Park, a draft of players into six completely new teams will take place at Club Coffs on next Friday. This will be the first time where players from opposing teams will integrate into other teams. CHDCA committee delegate, Grant Lawler said he was looking forward to seeing what younger players could bring to the fold. "The idea was to bring something new to the already existing tournament," Lawler said. "It's a form of the game that is gaining a large following and becoming really popular around Australia.

"It was brought about because some of the kids in the lower grades are actually really good and it is an initiative to get them playing with some of the top players in the first grade teams."

Lawler said the new T20 competition won't interfere with the regular season with a gap built into the fixture to accommodate it. He added he'd already received lots of positive feedback from all the teams. "Already we have 54 players to be spread over six teams, and there will be a process so that each team is well selected during the draft pick," he said.

Draft night for new Twenty20 competition fast approaching - 15th Jan 2014

THE Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association (CHDCA) is starting a Twenty20 competition this weekend in an attempt to boost the game's appeal in the area.

With the drafting process to take place at Club Coffs on Friday night, it's hopedthe short game will become a permanent fixture in the district's cricket calendar for years to come.

The draft will mean players take to the field for completely new teams over the next fortnight instead of their usual club side.

CHDCA committee delegate Grant Lawler said he was looking forward to seeing what younger players could bring to the fold.

GOOD FOR THE GAME: A Twenty20 tournament is set to take off this weekend to boost the popularity of the game in the area.

WITH a flick of the wrist, Coffs Harbour saw its new Twenty20 competition kick-off in spectacular fashion over the weekend. It also saw the unveiling of Sawtell batsman, Tyh Murphy as the number one draft pick in the competition. He slotted into the Brumbies team quite easily and put in a resounding 80 runs for them. Brumbies batsman, and CHDCA committee member, Grant Lawler said Murphy got off to a brilliant start. "With a score like that on debut he's going to be one to watch in the future," Lawler said. Lawler said with the tournament in full-swing there are plenty of positives to take away from it. "There has been a massive positive response from some of the players with it all being good," he said. "Everyone was excited to get in there and have a crack at the new form.

"Of course there was going to be some talk about Twenty20 ruining technique, but all in all, there were some normal cricket shots but played in a very aggressive way." Stingrays batsman Brad Lewis smashed 103 off only 39 balls to help his team record two wins on the opening day while Rhys Tolhurst claimed 4-12 for the Devils in one of their games. The second round of T20 action gets underway this weekend.

CHDCA T20 TABLE AFTER DAY 1 Ghosts – 12, Stingrays – 12, Brumbies – 7, Devils – 7, Sharks – 2, Dragons – 2

Early clash between Ghosts and Stingrays to decide T20 title - 25th Jan 2014

IT ALL COMES TO THIS: The final of the T20 round-robin tournament will play its course tonight with either the Ghosts or Stingrays in the driving seat.

AFTER last week's cracking start to the T20 competition at Leisure Park, the second round looks set to be just as entertaining. As it stands, the Ghosts and Stingrays are on top of the ladder with 12 points apiece, but will face each other in the opening game of the day to decide who has the upper hand. Further down the pecking order are the Brumbies and Devils equal on seven points. Both will have to win both their games to have any chance of winning the tournament.

CHDCA committee member Grant Lawler said as there won't be a grand final, the winner will be decided by points at the close of play. "At this stage, there won't be a grand final due to not being able to carry into a third week, so the winner will be decided by scores and wickets taken over the course of the two weeks," Grant said.

Stingrays opening batsman Brad Lewis will be crucial for the Stingrays if they are to advance and win both games.

WHAT would an Australia Day weekend be without a good old' fashioned game of cricket?

Saturday saw the final rounds of Coffs Harbour's inaugural Sommers Twenty20 round robin tournament and it sure didn't disappoint.

The Devils scraped home after a monumental fight back to claim the first title of what proved to be a successful venture into the shortest form of the game.

After the first round of matches last week the Devils were languishing three places behind the leaders.

But a valiant win in their first game on Saturday against the Brumbies and then finally against the Ghosts ensured they claimed tournament honours.

The Ghosts really had no answer for the swashbuckling batting display that the Devils posted in their opening innings which was 4-147.

Sawtell linchpin, Ben Andrews, continued his good form this season by belting 69 runs for the Devils, but got caught out off a brilliant Ben Heaton ball who earlier in the day claimed a hat-trick in their first game against the Stingrays.

With the weather deteriorating throughout the day, play was reduced to 17 overs.

The success of this year's T20 tournament should give the CHDCA plenty to think about for next year's competition set-up and with much of the feedback being positive, it seems certain to make an appearance next year. Bowlers are kings on opening weekend of Coffs cricket summer - 13th Oct 2013

Sawtell's Ben Andrews gets huge lift with the ball as he almost turns Ian Slapp inside out in the match at Richardson Park. Leigh Jensen

HANDY top order partnerships and a wagging tail was the good news for Park Beach Bowling Club Colts when they opened the 2013-14 cricketing summer against Sawtell at Richardson Park. With Matt Rose (24), Ian Slapp (44) and Trent Statham leading the way to double figures, Colts were able to grind a passage to 172 through 48 overs. However four of the last five men at the crease managed to contribute 58 of the final tally to make sure Sawtell won't have an easy passage when play resumes next weekend.

On a humid and smoky afternoon, Ben Andrews and Trent Dierick did the lion's share of the bowling for the home side. Dierick signalled he's arrived as a first line bowler and will cause much heartache for batsmen by putting his name against the first 'five for' of the season. From 15 overs he returned 5/60 with one maiden. Andrews bowled 17 overs with five maidens and 3/50. He also took three catches in the innings.

The Blue Caps spent 23 overs of their turn in the middle to score 6/92 with Trent Mitchell contributing 42 of those.

Meanwhile, new outfit Bellinger Valley survived the baptism of fire at Fitzroy Oval on the visit to premiers Plantation Diggers. The home side batted 59.1 overs for their 178 and the Valley were 2/32 in reply at stumps.

Across the grades it was a bowler's weekend. Woolgoolga fourth-grader Ravi Phoonie produced the best figures of 7/38 against Diggers. Bowling for Diggers in third grade, Brendan Cunningham took 5/42 against Sawtell. Top batsman of the round was Woolgoolga's Brendan Tough with an even half century in fourth grade against Diggers.

Colts take early premiership lead after CHDCA opening round - 20th Oct 2013

Sawtell paceman Ben Andrews put the death stare on his intended PBBC Colts victim in the weekend clash at Richardson Park. Leigh Jensen

PARK Beach Bowling Club Colts sit on top of the table after the completion of Coffs Harbour District Cricket's opening round. Colts took first innings points against Sawtell after the home side's 141 total fell 31 runs short of what was required. Starting at 6/92, not out batsman Casey Arendarcikas fell without adding to the score and Chris Neal managed to put on an extra 10 runs before being clean bowled by Trent Statham. Ben Andrews provided thrills with an unbeaten 31 but ran out of partners.

For Colts, evergreen Matt Francis could boast three maidens alongside his figures of 5/45 while Statham provided great support with 3/47. Back in the middle the Colts top order proved difficult to remove with Matt Rose (31), Zac Symons (30) and Ian Slapp (28) helping push the total to 6/133 by the end of the session.

Meanwhile, the match at Fitzroy Oval was called off after a ground inspection. Bellinger Valley spokesman Paul Balenzano said Friday's rain storms had left surface water around the field and an 11am meeting decided to abandon the fixture and declare a draw. Bellingen and Plantation Diggers will share points.

Next Saturday is the start of a two-weekend round. PBBC Colts host Plantation Diggers at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park while it will be Bellinger Valley's home match against Sawtell at Brelsford Park. The Valley side will share matches this summer between the Coffs Harbour venue and Rowe Oval in Dorrigo.

PBBC Colts play the frontrunning game in clash with Diggers - 27th Oct 2013

Sawtell batsman Chris Neal takes evasive action against a torrid Bellinger Valley bowling attack in the match at Brelsford Park. Leigh Jensen

ANOTHER strong batting performance has Park Beach Bowling Club Colts cruising in the tangle with Plantation Diggers at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park. A fine 83 from Ian Slapp that included nine boundaries and four sixes set the template. After Matt Rose departed on 3-89, Slapp poured on the pressure and helped push the score along to 163 before losing his wicket to the bowling of Joe Willman. Ben Sims then took control with 52 prime runs that now have the side in the box seat after finishing their innings on 249.

Diggers shared the wickets around with Rhys Tolhurst posting the best figures of 2/10 from 2.3 overs. After spending 14 overs in the middle, Diggers were 2/59 at stumps with Alex Byrne (30) and Russell Gardner (15) the not out batsmen.

Details are sketchy from the match between Bellinger Valley and Sawtell at Brelsford Park. What is known is Sawtell batted first and after 12 overs were 5/35. What transpired from there appears to be an unsolved mystery.

Looking across the day, it was the Diggers club stealing the honours. Fourth grade batsman Ryan Bennett posted the first century of the 2013-14 summer with an unbeaten 125 against his club's second side. In the same match, team mate Justin Sheldon reached every Aussie batsman's "devil's number" of 87 before being dismissed. Second grade trundler Ken Hoad produced exceptional figures of 6/33 against Sawtell.

Dave and Ben are the 'double trouble men' at Brelsford Park - 3rd Nov 2013

SUPERB bowling spells in both innings from two of Sawtell's best proved impossible for Bellinger Valley to handle at Brelsford Park. Ben Andrews and Dave Langford-Smith were double trouble for the home side in a match that had everything. For a large part of day one it seemed Bello could do no wrong and they had Sawtell on the ropes at 5/35. Eventually, the grand final runners-up grafted to a total of 154 but if the competition new chums had any dreams of landing a crushing blow, those were soon shattered as Andrews and Langford-Smith cut loose with the ball. Andrews removed Simon Donald and main dangerman Justin Gilbert while Langford-Smith took care of Garth Burley and Mick Gilroy to have the top order in tatters. Between them they cleaned up the tail - Trent Dierick was the only other bowler to get a look in - and with Bellinger Valley all out for 111, the match had turned upside down.

Back at the crease, Sawtell batted to declare at 3/178. Rick Welsh went gangbusters while Brad Lewis finished unbeaten on 63. To avoid an outright defeat, Bellinger Valley needed to bat out the day. The top order made starts but the occupation couldn't be maintained and the side went out in their 26th over with the total on 81. Andrews took another four scalps to make him arguably the dominant force in an extraordinary game.

At Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park, premiers Plantation Colts edged past Park Beach Bowling Club Colts' total of 249 in the 63rd over. Star of the show was Russell Gardner who finished unbeaten on 136 while Jimmy Bellamy recorded a fine 57 runs. Colts best bowler was John Lovett with 3/25 from eight overs including three maidens.

Sawtell bat through heatwave to leave competitor's uneasy - 10th Nov 2013

Sawtell opener Ricky Welsh puts another delivery safely out of reach of the field as he smashes his way to a stylish 93-run innings against Diggers. Rob Wright

WE'RE only three matches into the 2013-14 summer of cricket and already Sawtell's batting feats are sending shivers down the spines of rivals. They were at it again in the visit to Fitzroy Oval to take on grand final conquerors Plantation Diggers. Sawtell's batsmen feasted on runs. Opener Ricky Welsh went within seven runs of a century to lead the way. Trent Mitchell was first man out after compiling a handy 37 and while Trent Dierick and Tyh Murphy went without scoring, strong partnerships with middle order men Ben Andrews and Brendan Foote must have had the premiers groaning. Again, the tail-enders gave the best indication of things to come with the last four men at the crease going close to adding another hundred to the final total of 304. For Diggers, Joe Willman toiled through 19 overs in a lake of perspiration to take 4/99. Diggers had 2/62 by stumps after Ben Andrews struck early to take the prized wicket of Alex Byrne.

In the match at Rowe Oval, Bellinger Valley skipper Justin Gilbert went through Park Beach Bowling Club Colts like a dose of salts to have the visitors all out for 142 despite remaining in the middle for 51 overs. The contrast to the coastal match is startling with Sawtell batting just eight overs longer for more than double Colts' scoring rate. Gilbert was on fire with figures of 5/31 conjured up in just 11 overs while Julian Hulbert was a vital cog in the machinery, dragging in four catches. But here comes the tough bit. At last call, the home side was making heavy weather at 3/26 with only Mick Gilroy's 13 getting to double figures. Zac Symons took two wickets and Josh Innes the other. The Bello boys do have something in the locker with Captain Gilbert still to bat.

Across all grades, top batsman of the weekend was Coffs Tigers fourth-grader Andrew McDonald who blazed away for 105 against Diggers, one more than Dorrigo's Jamie Ballard against Colts in third grade. Woolgoolga's Nic Dosanjh took 6/34 in second grade against Nana Glen.

CHDCA first grade matches caught out by hail storm - 17th Nov 2013

With the covers on at Fitzroy Oval there was little for Diggers player Russell Gardner to do except steer clear of raindrops. Rob Wright

SPORT across the region also took a pounding from Saturday afternoon's thunderstorm.

First grade cricket was abandoned on day two of round three with draws declared.

This means Sawtell lead the competition on 14 points, two points ahead of Plantation Diggers.

While the weekend result is still to be ratified and points allocated, Park Beach Bowling Club Colts remain third and Bellinger Valley, fourth.

Next weekend, first grade reverts to the one-day format with matches starting at 12.30pm.

PBBC Colts play Sawtell at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park with Bellinger hosting Diggers at a venue to be announced.

Weather not to blame this time for Bellinger Valley - 3rd Dec 2013

Sawtell celebrates the dismissal of another Bellinger Valley batsman. Leigh Jensen

THE weather may have conspired against them at times this season but the fact is after five rounds Bellinger Valley is still winless. On Saturday the weather wasn't to blame though as a poor batting display that conspired a defeat against the competition leading Sawtell. Having won the toss against at Richardson Park on Saturday, Bellinger Valley batted first but dropped wickets at crucial intervals to be dismissed for 110 in only 36 overs. Sawtell spin wizard, Trent Dierick produced a man of the match performance after ripping through the Bellinger line-up, taking 4-14 for the hosts. Despite losing 4-18 late in its innings, Sawtell was never really in danger of not chasing down the modest target.

Bellinger captain, Justin Gilbert, who made the highest score of the day with 36, made no excuses for his team's performance but admitted that the game could've went both ways. "It was actually a close game, but unfortunately they beat us,"Gilbert said. "We were doing well until we consecutively lost three wickets quite fast, it was the turning point in the game and we couldn't get back on track after that." The Bellinger outfit has looked vulnerable this season by losing one and drawing four games so far. Gilbert admitted it had been a tricky start to the season but the weather has had plenty to do with the outcomes. "I thought that we've been ripped off by three games due to the rain the last few months," he said. "Everyone seems to be pulling together and playing well but we'll just need a few wins to get on a roll."

The weekend's other game between Plantation Diggers and PBBC Colts was abandoned due to rain.

Gett gets six on the last ball for fine Colts win over Bello - 8th Dec 2013

SIX runs off the last delivery received by Nathan Gett gave Park Beach Bowling Club Colts a stunning victory in the one day clash with Bellinger Valley at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park. Colts gave chase to a target of 155 and finished the day at 6/159 after Gett opened the shoulders one last time. However, the real talking point was the cameo from the competition's record breaking run-getter, Craig Haworth, who made a flying visit home from working in Inverell and didn't disappoint the fans. "We can always rely on 'Flea' to come up with something extra," Colts opener Matt Rose reported. "He made 33 not out and then came out to take three wickets, so not a bad afternoon. "Unfortunately, it's nothing permanent and his appearances will depend on where he's working and how close it is to Coffs. "Good thing is he's working in Tamworth next week so we should be able to get him back for next Sunday's rep game." Bellingen's woes continued. For the umpteenth time they got a great start and with Eric Moore blazing away, reached 1/70 after 15 overs. The next five wickets fell for 20 runs and while the tailenders tried to rally, it wasn't enough start on a wicket that had plenty for the batsmen.

At Richardson Park, Sawtell batted first against Plantation Diggers for a total of 213 with the bulk of the runs coming from the middle order, courtesy of Dave Angus-Crouch (41) and Dave Langford-Smith (46) in particular. Diggers lost Alex Byrne with the score at 24 but started putting it together, led by Dave McCormack who contributed 65 before removed by Langford-Smith to make it 4/113. From that moment, things petered out and it ended in the 41st over at 190. Langford-Smith picked up 4/40 from nine overs. It's one-day conditions again this Saturday with Bellinger Valley hosting Plantation Diggers at Rowe Oval in Dorrigo and Sawtell on home turf at Richardson Park for the visit from PBBC Colts.

Stormy Saturday brings cricket to an early halt - 15th Dec 2013

Sawtell captain Trent Mitchell finds the gap in the weather- interrupted clash with PBBC Colts at Richardson Park. Leigh Jensen

BOTH first grade one-day matches were declared draws after storms interfered with another Saturday of Coffs Harbour District cricket. Some play took place in the first innings but safety ruled when lightning entered the equation and matches were then called off.

Plantation Diggers won the toss and batted first in the visit to Dorrigo. Headed by 48 from James Bellamy and 29 runs compiled by Steve Meakins, Diggers were 7/133 in the 35th over when the umpires called a halt. For Bellinger Valley, Finley Wilson took 3/43 from his nine overs but was shaded by Mick Gilroy's 2/19 which included four maidens.

Back on the coast, Sawtell hosted Park Beach Bowling Club Colts at Richardson Park and were going nicely at 5/154 in the 33rd over when the lightning began to whip around the park.

In the last round this Saturday prior to the summer holiday break, Sawtell are back on home turf for the Bellinger Valley visit. Diggers and Colts will fight it out at Fitzroy Oval.

Eric is Sawtell's wrecker as Bellinger Valley open account - 22nd Dec 2013

Top order batsman James Bellamy blasted his way to triple figures in a magnificent innings against PBBC Colts. Bruce Thomas

WHEN Bellinger Valley picked Saturday to break through for that elusive maiden win of the 2013-14 summer, the victim was arguably the best in the one day cricket business. Sawtell have proved to be near-unbeatable at the limited over caper and again made a bold bid to chase down Bello's 7/257 but pulled up 12 runs short in the 44th over. Under sweltering skies the Bellingen batsmen had a field day after a horror start. Openers Simon Donald and Mick Gilroy went without scoring but the steadier arrived in the shape of skipper Justin Gilbert (66) and Julian Hulbert (30) who put the ship back on course. There was another attack of the tremors when Gilbert, Hulbert and next man in Garth Burley all returned to the pavilion with the scoreboard reading 97 runs but the best was to come. Last weekend against Colts, Eric Moore pulled off a super innings that suggested something even bigger was just around the corner. Like, the 116 runs he pulled off this week with placement to all parts of Richardson Park. The Blue Caps put their heads down and almost ruined Bello's party. Tyh Murphy contributed 60, Trent Dierick brought 37 to the table and Ben Andrews finished unbeaten on 88 but when Rhys Watson was run out late in the session, it was finally the turn of the Valley side to bask in the glory.

At Fitzroy Oval, Plantation Diggers batted first and were too classy for the Park Beach Bowling Club Colts' rookies filling in while the A-listers were on festive leave. Diggers scored 5/289, led by a blistering 106 from big-hitting Jimmy Bellamy. For Colts, opener Ben Sims top scored with 52 but the damage was done by Joe Willman who bowled 7.1 overs for awesome figures of 5/15 including two maidens. Players now take a break until January 4 when the competition resumes with a limited overs round. Plantation Diggers are at Fitzroy Oval hosting Sawtell while Bellinger Valley will come down from the mountain to take on PBBC Colts at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park.

Coin tossers call it right as cricketers melt in heatwave - 5th Jan 2014

Sawtell batsman Trent Mitchell flashes the blade and attempts to despatch a Joe Willman delivery to the boundary. Leigh Jensen

TEAMS winning the toss and batting first came up trumps when Coffs Harbour District cricketers wilted on a sweltering Saturday.

It was torture for Plantation Diggers to watch Sawtell arrive at Fitzroy Oval, call the right side of the coin and then put on 244 in the limited overs match. Brad Lewis and Tyh Murphy each contributed 47 runs and Ricky Welsh fell one short of a half century to give the Blue Caps a firm foundation.

When Diggers hit the centre, Russell Gardner attempted a one-man rescue mission by putting on 60 but his batting mates weren't able to match that effort. The other fly in Diggers' ointment was a sterling bowling performance from Patrick Myles who finished the afternoon with figures of 4/34.

Across town at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park, Bellinger Valley proved that last start victory was no fluke by collecting the scalp of Park Beach Bowling Club Colts. Bello's total of 177 wasn't a big one to chase, mainly due to the 4/24 produced by Trent Statham. Unfortunately for Colts, the oppressive heat got in the way. Tim Parkins top-scored with 33 and that just about the only thing that could be salvaged.

The regular season will now go into recess, resuming with a two-day round on February 1-2.

In the interim, a two weekend T20 venture will be played on January 18 and 25 with details released in coming days.

Sawtell skittle Colts after the home side bats fail to fire - 2nd Feb 2014

Sawtell palms were very sore after all those high-fives after all those tumbling PBBC Colts wickets. Rob Wright

SECOND grade batsmen Ben Sims and Troy Britnell delivered the best evidence possible to Park Beach Bowling Club selectors a couple of weeks back why first grade selection should be considered. Against Woolgoolga in round 12, Sims scored 154 and Britnell 120.

Moving right along to this weekend's round 14 matches and previous efforts by the lower graders were looking good on a day when the first grade men could only manage a combined total of 62 in a first innings disaster against Sawtell. Despite the home ground advantage of Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park, Colts continued their summer of underachievement. At one stage in pre-season discussions, the club was being freely tipped as the side to beat. For the men in blue baggy caps, David Langford-Smith was chief destroyer with ball then bat. Sawtell quickly raced to 190 to take first innings points and with the match being played over two days, began the chase for an innings victory. In the second visit to the crease, Colts were 0-10 at stumps.

At Rowe Oval in Dorrigo, Plantation Diggers won the toss and batted into the 41st over for their 141 runs. Against a rejuvenated Bellinger Valley that might have proved a problematic tally, had not the home side stumbled to 8-55 after 31 overs to leave them still clinging to life but in reality, just two wickets away from a first innings loss.

Fightbacks grab the cricketing spotlight - 12th Feb 2014

PLUCKY: Ian Slapp crunched 69 superb runs for PBBC Colts to stave off a near-certain innings defeat. Photo: Rob Wright Rob Wright SAWTELL and Plantation Diggers emerged from the weekend with first innings points after fightbacks by Park Beach Bowling Club Colts and Bellinger Valley respectively staved off innings defeats.

In the case of under-pressure Colts, a superb second innings knock of 69 by Ian Slapp, after John Lovett had contributed 60 at the top of the order, returned the side from the edge of the precipice.

However, the match will be remembered more for the superb 6-26 from Dave Langford-Smith on the first day that set the agenda. He bowled for 12.3 overs with five maidens in those figures. Mark Oates also batted for a handy 66 in the second innings.

At Dorrigo, Bellinger Valley slipped the noose by virtue of occupation of the crease. With the match already decided, the home side could easily have surrendered meekly, but managed to hold on for 35 overs in the second dig to deny Diggers the extra share of points.

With two rounds remaining, Sawtell heads the table on 45 points from Diggers on 35, Colts 28 and Bellinger Valley 27.

Play will fall over both days of the coming weekend. Plantation Diggers and PBBC Colts meet at Fitzroy Oval while Sawtell heads up the hill to Dorrigo to take on Bellinger Valley.

District cricketers clear the decks in preparation for semis - 9th Mar 2014

Sawtell put in the big shout and Russell Gardner is finally on his way after contributing a blistering 86 runs for Plantation Diggers. Rob Wright

SAWTELL tuned up for the looming semi finals series by overhauling Plantation Diggers to win their one day clash at Richardson Park, the final round of the 2013-14 minor premiership. After winning the toss and batting 39 overs, Diggers compiled a creditable 172 after Russell Gardner flashed the blade for a personal contribution of 86. Gardner was finally trapped leg before by Brendan Foote with the total at 150 and the accumulation could have been higher and much harder to peg back if a second batsmen had come forward with a big innings in partnership. Joe Willman posted 17 and Brad Carey 14 but these were just beyond what might have caused the minor premiers a few more hot flushes.

Sawtell ended their innings at 6/175 in the 34th over. Brad Lewis was the trump card with 54 but five other batsmen made it to double figures. That capacity by Sawtell to play the partnership card was the best part of the performance and a repeat of that kind of thing over the next few weeks - especially under the two-day format - could likely be the key to another major title.

At Rowe Oval, Bellinger Valley had a morale-boosting win over Park Beach Bowling Club Colts. Batting first, the home side racked up 169 runs with Matthew Hudson top-scoring on 60, aided by handy contributions of 31 by opener Scott Hulbert and 29 from skipper Justin Gilbert. Colts could only manage 70 in reply with Trent Statham (22) and Nathan Gett (17) the only batsmen to reach double figures.

Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association is still to officially announce next week's semi final line-ups but it's expected to be the same composition of opponents as this final round.

Diggers through to grand final - 17th Mar 2014

DRIVEN TO WIN: Plantation Diggers veteran Steve Meakins prepares to launch into a cover drive during the major semi-final against Sawtell on the weekend. Photo: Leigh Jensen / The Coffs Coast Advocate Leigh Jensen

SHOCK results in the first weekend of Coffs Harbour District cricket semi finals has thrown the premiership possibilities wide open. The only certainty is that Park Beach Bowls Club Colts is out of contention after elimination by giant-killing Bellinger Valley. Less surprising is Plantation Diggers moving through to the grand final to defend its crown after proving too good for minor premier Sawtell.

At home turf at Richardson Park, Sawtell lost the toss and first opportunity in the middle but broke through immediately by removing opener Dave McCormack without scoring. They then became eyewitnesses as Diggers batted on to 267 with Joe Willman top-scoring on 77 before Ben Andrews finally removed him. Alex Byrne (48) and Joe Gardner (45 not out) ably supported their captain through 73 overs in the middle. Andrews finished with 3-71 while Trent Dierick did best in his comeback to the top grade with 5-78 from 23 overs.

Sawtell found trouble with leg before decisions and stagnated at 4-16 before the fightback began. Ricky Welsh hung on for 67 while skipper Dave Angus-Crouch (40) and Chris Neal (30) proved helpful but the end came in the 60th over with the score on 202. The Blue Caps will need to beat Bellinger Valley - the outfit that upset them at the last meeting - if they are to get another crack at Diggers.

The Bello boys batted first for 166 from 75 overs which in a perfect world wouldn't have been enough. However, PBBC Colts ran out of steam to be all out for 90.

Next weekend's preliminary finally is likely to be played at Richardson Park.

Sawtell storm into another grand final - 24th Mar 2014

SAWTELL will meet Plantation Diggers in the Coffs Harbour District Cricket grand final this weekend after a dramatic preliminary final victory over Bellinger Valley at Richardson Park.

Overnight rain forced a 90 minute delay on day one and at one stage with storm clouds moving in, it appeared likely that play would be impossible. However, the match began at 2.30pm after Bellinger won the toss and sent the home side to the middle. Sawtell found themselves in a pickle from the start. At 4-50, the situation was already dire but when the sixth wicket fell, the Blue Caps discovered something within. Veteran Chris Neal was the catalyst for the fightback and by the end of the innings, the minor premiers had gone from desperate to dangerous with 228 on the scoreboard.

Bellinger had 75 overs to face on Sunday and could still have grafted their way to victory. Remarkably, they arrived at 4- 50 - the same score as the opponents had arrived at in a significant moment the day before - but this time when the sixth wicket fell, they kept on falling. With Trent Mitchell, Ben Andrews, Pat Myles and captain Dave Angus-Crouch tearing through the visitors, it was all over by late afternoon.

Last year, Diggers downed Sawtell as the crowning moment of its 50th season and the defence of that premiership this Saturday and Sunday at Coffs Coast Sports and Leisure Park promises to be a another cracker. This will be the third summer in a row Sawtell and Plantation Diggers have faced off in the season decider. For Sawtell it will be the continuation of a tremendous run that has seen the team make eight grand finals in the past 10 years.

Run-hungry Diggers favourites - 29th Mar 2014

IMPRESSIVE: The experience and scoring ability of big match specialist Steve Meakins will be vital to Plantation Diggers. Photo: Leigh Jensen

MOMENTUM is with Plantation Diggers as the reigning premiers saddle up to defend their Coffs Harbour District Cricket title against Sawtell. But skipper Joe Willman agrees the weather may prove more powerful than a thousand umpires. "We didn't get the downpours early in the week that were predicted so fingers crossed," he said. "They've had the covers on and let's hope we can get out there as all the boys want to go. "On a good track, this game should be a belter. "I guess we have momentum with great form since Christmas and so much experience in the side if things start to get tough."

This will be Diggers' third straight grand final appearance and Willman said the style of play is very close between the sides. "Both sides can bat from top to bottom," he said. "We've put on 270 or so in recent starts and I reckon we can go over 300 if we put it together. "Yeah, I reckon there's still a really big total in us somewhere as this side is still improving. "It's a matter of taking the wickets when they come and not making mistakes."

The only change to the line-up that downed Sawtell in the major semi final is James Bellamy carrying the drinks at 12th man. "Late last year we struggled a bit when we were forced to chop and change the team around. "With the side settled, I think we can do it."

Sawtell pad up for a shot at finals glory - 29th Mar 2014

CAN Sawtell shrug off the change to their tremendous opening partnership of Trent Mitchell and Ricky Welsh in today’s grand final? Photo: Rob Wright

FOR a side with as much tenacity as Sawtell, don't write them off if the successful opening partnership of Ricky Welsh and Trent Mitchell is broken in today's grand final. Two weeks back the team lost key bowler Dave Langford-Smith. Immediately, Pat Myles came up with five wickets and while it's the opposite facet of the game now in question, captain Dave Angus-Crouch is unperturbed.

"Rick has to be away and while there's an outside chance we could get him back, we'll shuffle the batting order and remain strong," he said. The young skipper sees two (or three) key performance indicators that could carry the minor premiers one step further to the top.

"Partnerships and being able to bat right to the end."

SKIES cleared on Friday and fears of a wash-out for the 2013-14 Coffs Harbour District Cricket grand final were allayed. Sawtell won the toss just before 1pm Saturday and in a sign of the confidence of captain Dave Angus-Crouch, he sent openers Trent Mitchell and Angus Garland out to the middle. Angus-Crouch said pre-match he would only decide to bat first if he was confident rain had not affected the wicket.

However, Garland - deputising for unavailable opener Ricky Welsh - was first man out to Plantation Diggers' bowler Brad Carey after playing a delivery on to his stumps which carried through to the bails. The match will continue through into Sunday. Showers are predicted for the Coffs Coast overnight. Further updates when available.

UPDATE - day one close of play.

This could be one of the lowest-scoring deciders on record after Sawtell were all out for 144 in their first innings. After the loss of Gus Garland with the score on four, the Blue Caps steadied the ship and began a fightback that showed great promise before Trent Dierick was dismissed for 29 and opener Trent Mitchell became a Joe Willman scalp, five runs short of a half century. Under difficult conditions, Sawtell did well to last into the 61st over. However, Chris Neal (34) was the only remaining batsman to crack through double figures.

Willman, the Diggers' skipper, was exceptional with the ball and finished with 5-50. He was ably supported by Luke Corlis who returned 3-16 and six maidens from his 12 overs. In reply, Diggers are 2-28 after 11 overs. They lost Dave McCormack for 6 and Alex Byrne for 22. With no overnight rain, the match resumes at 1pm Sunday.

Sawtell sensational in classic grand final win over Diggers - 30th Mar 2014

SAWTELL completed the minor-major premiership double today by holding back the Plantation Diggers challenge in the 2013-14 Coffs Harbour District Cricket grand final.

After winning the toss on Saturday and deciding to bat first, victorious captain Dave Angus-Crouch now admits that decision was to give him a sleepless night after his side only managed 144 in the first innings. "Oh, yeah, mate ... there were a lot of nerves on Saturday night and before we went out today," he said. "In the back of the mind I always thought we could do it but in a grand final, nothing is certain."

Diggers were 2-28 at stumps on day one and had plenty of time to chase the required 117 runs for victory. Instead, the day turned black as batsman after batsman struggled to make any impact. Young Damon Rootes made small inroads with his 26 in the middle order but some usually reliable wielders of willow misfired. James Bellamy, Glen Kesby and even captain Joe Willman were all out without scoring. "I'm pretty shattered by it," Willman said. "Cricket can be pretty cruel. "However, the reality is we didn't bat well ... we didn't play well at all." The torture ended in the 41st over with the side dismissed for 75 runs. Willman was asked if the wicket played a part in his team's demise, after so much rain leading up to the match. "The wicket was just fine and no complaints at all," he said firmly. "We were the blokes that put seven catches in the air."

Diggers' batsmen finished the game battered and bruised after Sawtell's bowling attack smashed them relentlessly. In particular, Ben Andrews turned in a lethal 10-over spell at the end of day one and if Diggers thought there'd be a let-up on Sunday, they were disappointed. Andrews took 2-24, Pat Myles 2-29 and Trent Dierick finished with 2-7. But it was Angus-crouch who must take most of the credit. He took a massive, massive gamble and it paid off - and that's without factoring in his own bowling figures of an astonishing 4-15, surely something for the career show reel in a season decider. "We just put the ball in the right places and let the deck do the work," he added.
