The past season was very demanding but also successful once again for all involved. It was a season that welcomed new innovations with the inaugural Sommers Cup Twenty20 competition being played and enjoyed by all participants. Coffs Harbour hosted the NSW Country Colts Carnival in February with several local lads helping North Coastal Zone to victory. With eight teams and support staff being accommodated at Park Beach and Sawtell Holiday Parks we called upon all clubs to assist with catering and daily ground preparation. My sincere thanks to all volunteers who assisted over the three days whether you cooked breakfast, put out boundary markers, assisted with pitch covers during the inclement weather, or canteen duties as your support was valuable to a successful event. As a result we have been asked to host the Carnival again in November 2014. Following on from the carnival the wicket and ground preparations at Richardson Park have been recognised by NSW Country Cricket with Arthur Smart being awarded the NSW Country Curator of the Year. Congratulations to Arthur from all in Coffs Harbour for his efforts over a number of years which have assisted Coffs Harbour Cricket to be the chosen venue for most North Coast trials and representative fixtures. Coffs Harbour Cricket also appreciates immensely the work done by Ricky Welsh at both Fitzroy Oval and Brelsford Park together with the assistance he provides to the Coffs Harbour City Council staff at Coffs Coast Leisure Park. Russell Fensom and his crew always provide us with the grounds and wickets in their best possible state each weekend despite the number of other events which take place on these fields. Often maligned by some who are not aware of the political climate within Council, the CHCC Sports Unit provide us with a valuable support service that is continually negotiated, often week by week. The recent opening of the Regional Skate Park has provided us with yet another hurdle at Brelsford Park. It remains to be seen how compatible cricket and skateboarding will be in the future but I have lodged a request for sightscreens, signage to attempt to keep participants and bystanders off the playing field, as well as regular litter patrols to ensure that rubbish is contained. I would like to pass on a vote of thanks to the Coffs Harbour Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association for their contribution to our game week in and week out. It can often be a thankless task but also very rewarding when a match is completed without incident. In particular I congratulate Brian Kennedy for his involvement in Coffs Harbour Cricket and North Coast Cricket. Brian has advised the Umpires that he will not be standing for re-election to the Presidency after decades of service to the game. I believe that he will still officiate on the field but it is time for “The Fox” and his wife Maureen to take a break from administration duties. There are a multitude of people to thank for their time and efforts to assist the Association run smoothly each week. These people perform duties behind the scenes to ensure the statistics are up to date, our Year Book is produced as a quality online document, and scores are recorded correctly on the MyCricket website. Without naming them I am sure that we all appreciate their individual and combined efforts throughout the season. Congratulations to all our award winners, both individual and team, details of which are in the Year Book which will be available in the near future so I will not elaborate in this report. Special mention must go to Luke Corlis who had a stellar season both locally and at representative level. Luke was named in the ACT under 17 team after strong performances in City – NSW Country fixtures throughout the year. The ACT team effectively is a NSW 2nd XI. I anticipate another busy season in 2014/2015 with an agenda full of events both on and off the field. The Association will need the support of every single member to maintain our success in the year ahead. Finally I would like to mention the Kookaburra Ball allocation will continue for the next two season and it is hoped that all clubs will come on board to purchase cricket balls through the Association. INCORPORATED PRESIDENTS REPORT 2013-14 This is my final year compiling this report as I am stepping down as President of the Umpire’s Association. On the whole I have enjoyed the past 30+ years I have been at the helm, overseeing many changes to the rules and regulations of cricket umpiring, throughout this time. I am now looking forward to enjoying my umpiring. Organising the new season requires long hours of meetings, training days and nights and pre-match preparations, for both the Cricket Association and the Umpire’s and Scorer’s Association, the committees involved in all of this are numerous, many thanks for the generosity shown by the volunteering of time and effort - it is much appreciated. A special thank you to our Junior Association, you are fortunate to have a very enthusiastic committee and coaches, with interested and involved parents guiding our next generation of senior players. To those who go the next step, in inter-district and representative sides, both senior and junior levels, it is always a big ask, but it is because of this effort that our sport continues to grow.

Yet, as Brubaker (2005: 10) notes, ‘Sophisticated discussions are sensitive to the heterogeneity of diaspora; but they are not always sensitive to the heterogeneity of nation- states.’ Consequently, this chapter examines both the role of cricket in changing conceptions of Englishness in contemporary times, and the multifaceted nature of those who identify with this nation. Sport, of course, does not exist in a vacuum and the ways in which English people more generally express their identity appear to have undergone rapid and overt change in recent years. Indeed feelings of English national identity were perhaps stronger at the end of the twentieth century than they had ever previously been (Kumar 2003a).

After the first fifty years, the then Secretary, Jack Hoelscher, wrote the Club history. In his speech at the nineteenth anniversary dinner, Bob Young enlarged on this history. This history has drawn upon parts of both efforts. Prior to this current publication there has not been a list of players. Information has been gathered from annual reports post 1924, and newspaper results from 1897 to 1924. My thanks to QCA historian Warwick Torrens who provided information from his vast knowledge of Queensland cricket, and Ian Sturgess also of the QCA who is collecting information on club cricket in Brisbane. The material contained in this book has been collected over a period of three years. I hope you enjoy reading the Club’s history in its hundredth year.
