WEDNESDAY FAST FACTS

• The first semi-final spots are on the line Wednesday at the Next Gen ATP Finals when 2018 finalist Alex de Minaur meets Miomir Kecmanovic in Group A and Italian Jannik Sinner faces Mikael Ymer in Group B. The winners of those matches can qualify for Friday’s semi-finals based on the scenarios detailed on pages 2 and 3.

• On the ATP Tour, however, de Minaur became the first player born in 1999 or later to break through for a championship. He won three titles this year, while Kecmanovic fell one point shy of claiming his first at Antalya.

2019 NEXT GEN ATP FINALS TALKING POINTS

• Eight countries are represented and eight Top-100 players are competing for the first time in the three-year history of the Next Gen ATP Finals, headed by 2018 finalist and World No. 18 Alex de Minaur of Australia.

• De Minaur captured the first three ATP Tour titles of his career this season at Sydney, Atlanta and Zhuhai.

• The only five men with more titles than de Minaur are the Top-5 players in the world: No. 2 Novak Djokovic (5), No. 5 Dominic Thiem (5), No. 1 Rafael Nadal (4), No. 3 Roger Federer (4) and No. 4 Daniil Medvedev (4).

• Joining de Minaur in Group A are fellow 20-year-olds Casper Ruud, Miomir Kecmanovic and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Ruud and Kecmanovic each won 22 matches and reached an ATP Tour final this year.

• Former World No. 1 juniors Ruud and Kecmanovic will open play in Milan on Tuesday. As teammates on the ITF Junior Circuit, they reached boys’ doubles semi-finals at 2015 Wimbledon, 2016 Roland Garros and 2016 Wimbledon. They went on to play men’s doubles together at Roland Garros and the US Open earlier this year.

• De Minaur and Davidovich Fokina face off in a battle of former World No. 2 juniors. Though the Aussie has a clear edge in experience, the Spaniard won their lone prior meeting on the ATP Challenger Tour in May 2018.

• Group B is led by 21-year-olds Frances Tiafoe, Ugo Humbert and Mikael Ymer. However, most eyes in Milan will be on the youngest competitor in Next Gen ATP Finals history: 18-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner.

• Sinner defeated Tiafoe in Antwerp on 18 October to become the youngest ATP Tour semi-finalist in five years. If Sinner beats Tiafoe again on Tuesday, he will be the first Italian to earn a Next Gen ATP Finals victory (0-6).

• Sinner is one of eight Italians in the Top 100, which is the most in ATP Rankings history (since August 1973).

• Tiafoe returns to Milan seeking his first semi-final at any level since his runner-up finish at Estoril in May 2018.

• Humbert and Ymer meet for the first time on Tuesday. They have never crossed paths despite spending much of the season on the ATP Challenger Tour. Humbert is 21-5 with three titles and Ymer is 39-10 with four titles at Challengers in 2019. Ymer is scheduled to end his year at a Challenger event next week in Helsinki, Finland.

• The champion will earn $429,000 if he goes undefeated this week. That would be the biggest payday for all eight participants and surpass the career totals of both Sinner ($274,470) and Davidovich Fokina ($310,474).

• Stefanos Tsitsipas (2018) and Hyeon Chung (2017) each went 5-0 to win the Next Gen ATP Finals. They also both went on beat a six-time champion en route to the Australian Open semi-finals the following January.

• Tsitsipas’ upset of Federer and Chung’s straight-set win over Djokovic are two of the many #NextGenATP success stories. Three past participants of the Next Gen ATP Finals broke into the Top 10 this season. o Tsitsipas, the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals champion, entered the Top 10 on 4 March. o , who played at the 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals, entered the Top 10 on 10 June. o Daniil Medvedev, a 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals semi-finalist, entered the Top 10 on 15 July.

• Matteo Berrettini lost to 459th-ranked in the first round of a 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals wild card tournament open only to eight Italians under the age of 22. Berrettini is now the No. 1 Italian and World No. 8.

• Berrettini, Medvedev and Tsitsipas will be competing at the Nitto ATP Finals in London from 10-17 November.

• The tradition of breaking tradition at the Next Gen ATP Finals continues with the following innovations. o Round Robin format with Best-of-5 sets up to 4 games o Tiebreakers played at 3-3 in each set instead of 6-6 o Only event on the ATP Tour to use no-ad scoring in singles o For the first time, players are permitted to use wearable technology o Coaching is allowed on all changeovers via headsets o All line calls are made by Hawk-Eye Live, not line judges o Video review is available for judgment calls such as double bounces o Towel racks are to be used at the backs of the court For the latest stats, facts and figures about the ATP Tour, follow @ATPMediaInfo on Twitter.
