DAWN CRACKERS Marathon Week and Day Instructions and Tips

 Lighten your workout routine to help repair muscles worn from training. Consider light inter- val training to remind your legs they need to still go quickly, but don't do anything that will make you sore.

 Begin focusing on the upcoming race; calmly visualize yourself running the last few miles and finishing the race. Think positive thoughts. Stretch and Relax.

 Get as much sleep as you can during the week. You may not get 40 winks the night before the marathon because of nervousness, so store up your energy reserve now.

 Maintain a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet during the seven days before your big run. Don't forget to drink lots of fluids. Eat your biggest carbohydrate meal 2 nights before your race and eat a normal meal the night before and a snack before you go to bed.

 Make a list of items you'll need for the marathon - power gels, Sports drinks, your running number - and gather them during the week. Lay them all out the night before or have them securely packed in your bag to take with you.

 Make arrangements with friends and family if they're planning to cheer you on during the race, and organize your transportation to and from the marathon. Remember, we still have room on the marathon bus if you want to join us.  Check weather forecasts for the day of the marathon a few days before the race. Plan your dress accordingly. Wear clothes you know you feel comfortable in.

 Lay out equipment and clothing the night before, and pack up all the items you'll bring to the course. Eat an early dinner, a snack before bed and go to bed early.

 Wake up at least 2 hours before the start on race day, and eat a good breakfast with a high number of carbs, but some protein as well.

 Start drinking water or a sports drink before you get to the site, and visit the bathroom one last time before the race. Eat a banana, Gel, or some Chomps 30 minutes before the race.

 During the race, remember to get some carbs in your body every 45 minutes or so. Drink at every water station.

 Giving high fives is awesome, but limit them at the beginning. Use your energy to run well and take in all the fun the spectators have to offer.

 At some point during the race, something may go wrong. At this point, stay positive. You’ve done the training, you are strong and ready to race through this tough time. It will get better with positive thoughts.

 Look for us at mile 25.5 to cheer you on to the finish. This is your day and we are all out there to support you! Good luck and have fun!

The Best and Worst of Marathon Sunday

Marathon Sunday is almost here. A day you all have trained for now since December or January. Some of you will be racing the Half Marathon while others will be completing the Full Marathon.

You’ve made it to the start line. You feel healthy, happy and ready to run. You’ll getThe a following little nervous probably the next couple days leading up to the race, but that’s ok. Use those nerves to run smartsaved and his havelife….. a great race. Quick CPR

Remember that for some of you, you will have a perfect race day. Everything will comeQuick together arrival of andthe am- you will have the race you visualized, the race you trained for. Some of you will have abulance not so perfect race. It happens, anything can happen on marathon Sunday. The key is to stay focused.Quick Even cardiac when interven- things feel like they are at their worst, if you are not in need of medical care, then push throughtion at to Presby the finish. If it’s fatigue or just a bad day, walk, talk to others on the course and focus on getting to that finish line. Trust me, if you are able to get to the finish line, a bad marathon is better than a marathon you do not fin- ish. I’m just as proud of the marathons and triathlons that I had to overcome pain, fatigue and a bad day as I am the ones that went perfectly. On those tough days, you become a stronger athlete and it gives you the strength you need to succeed in your next race.

Whatever Sunday brings for each of you, cherish the race and the experience. Enjoy the crowds along the way; remember to smile, even if things aren’t going your way. A smile can actually pick you up and help you to feel better. Thank the volunteers on the course. For the marathoners, we will see you at mile 25.5 with high fives and a last boost of energy to get you to the finish.

Good luck to all my friends racing this weekend. I can’t wait to watch you all finish and to see you achieve your goals. Enjoy your Sunday Run through Downtown Pittsburgh!

Strong Kids Campaign I support a lot of charities, but one of my favorites is the YMCA and its Strong Kids Campaign. Most members don’t realize that throughout our YMCA are individuals who are unable to stay members or kids who can’t participate in programs any longer be- cause of their inability to pay. Someone may have lost their job or has medical bills that are impacting them financially forcing these people to cancel their membership at the YMCA. Thankfully, the YMCA does not deny a person membership because of their inability to pay. The YMCA instead has the Strong Kids Program. This program offers financial assistance to members when they need it the most.

These families and kids are throughout our YMCA and each year, our YMCA does what it can to raise much needed funds to support these families.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Please give a gift today to help a child. Whether it’s $5 or $500, your gift will help a child or a family in need con- tinue their membership at our YMCA. To many of these families, this is their family time their recreational time, their entertainment. I know some of these families and individuals personally and I can tell you, they do not take this for granted. These people use their membership and they truly appreciate the membership.

Help a community member today and make a gift. It’s so easy, you can talk to me personally about your gift or you go online and make a gift through the website. You can even stop at the front desk. The choice is yours. We just hope you choose to support this amazing program so amazing people can continue to stay healthy, happy and strong when even things may not be going their way.

The thing I love even more about this campaign is the number of people who get back on their feet, become mem- bers on their own again and then pay it forward by paying for a membership for another family. That is what it’s truly all about.

Remember, Every gift makes a difference. Everyone has a role to play. Together, we can achieve so much more.

Give Today!
