INFORMATION TO USERS The most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this manuscript from the microfilm master. UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality of this reproduction is dependent upon the quality of the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are reproduced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each original is also photographed in one exposure and is included in reduced form at the back of the book. Photographs included in the original manuscript have been reproduced xerographically in this copy. Arthropod diversity and non-flying arthropod food web are strongly influenced by 16 habitat components related to plant architecture and habitat structural complexity. 17 However, we still poorly understand the relationship between arthropod diversity and the 18 vegetation structure at different spatial scales. Here, we examined how harvestmen 19 assemblages are distributed across six local scale habitats (trees, dead trunks, palms, 20 bushes, herbs and litter), and along three proxies of vegetation structure (number of 21 palms, number of trees and litter depth) at mesoscale. 22 2. We collected harvestmen using cryptic manual search in 30 permanent plots of 250 m 23 at Reserva Ducke, Amazonas, Brazil.

Adult males were dissected, the reproductive tract was schematized and the seminal vesicle was processed by light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The male reproductive tract is composed of a tubular testis, two deferent ducts, a seminal vesicle, a propulsive organ and a penis, similar to that observed in other Opiliones. The spermatozoa from the seminal vesicle are oval, aflagellate and immotile, presenting a nucleus surrounding an invagination of the cytoplasm, as well as a complex acrosome and projections on the cell surface. In the testis, spermatozoa are devoid of projections. In the seminal vesicle, they gradually acquire the projections with tufts adhering to it. Consequently, spermatozoa in various distinct stages of projection development can be found in the seminal vesicle. We believe that these projections (1) could help transport sperm along the male and perhaps female reproductive tracts; (2) are used to anchor the spermatozoa inside the female spermatheca in order to avoid mechanical displacement by the genitalia of other males and (3) may play a role in oocyte recognition.

  • Description of the Male of Daguerreia Inermis Soares
DESCRIPTION OF THE MALE OF DAGUERREIA INERMIS SOARES & SOARES, WITH BIOLOGICAL NOTES ON POPULATION SIZE IN THE GRUTA DA LANCINHA, PARANA, BRAZIL (ARACHNIDA, OPILIONES, GONYLEPTIDAE) Ricardo Pinto-da-Rocha 1 ABSTRACT. The male of Daguerreia inermis Soares & Soares, 1947, a troglophilic harvestman, is described. Distribution records are given for caves of the Speleological Province of Vale do Ribeira and two non carbonatic areas (Telemaco Borba and Arapoti, Parana), in southeastern Brazil. The population of the Gruta da Lancinha (Parana, Brazil) was studied from October 1988 to February 1989. The population size was estimated, by Fisher Ford's method, between 158-610 individuals. The sex ratio observed was 1: 1. KEY WORDS . Arachnida, Opiliones,Dagllerreia inermis, cave fauna, population size The Brazilian cavernicolous harvestmen are represented according to PrN TO-DA-RoCHA (1995) mainly by the family Gonyleptidae, but Minuidae, Tricom matidae, Cosmetidae and Stygnidae are also present. Only two troglobite species (obligatory cave dwellings) are recorded, Spaeleoleptes spaeleus H. Soares, 1966 (Minuidae, of the Gruta do Maquine, Minas Gerais State) and Pachylospeleus strinatii Silhavy, 1974 (Gonyleptidae, Pachylospeleinae, Sao Paulo State). The troglophiles (facultative cave dwelling species) are: Parare:!.ende::ius luridus H. Soares, 1972 (Tricommatidae, Sao Paulo State); Daguerreia inermis Soares & Soares, 1947 (Gonyleptidae, Pachylinae, Sao Paulo and Parana States); Eusarcus spp. (Gonyleptidae, Pachylinae, Minas Gerais and Goias States) and Stenostygnoi des caliginosus Pinto-da-Rocha, 1990 (Stygnidae, Para State). The trogloxenes (cave dwellings who return periodically to surface) belong to Goniosoma spp. (Gonyleptidae, Goniosomatinae, Sao Paulo and Parana States) and Paecilaema sp. (Cosmetidae, Goias State). Daguerreia inermis SOARES & SOARES (1947) was described based on a single female from the Gruta de Campinhos (= Gruta dos Jesuftas), Parana, Brazil.

ZooKeys 143: 1–12. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.143.1916 Abstract Praelibitia Roewer, 1956 and its type species, Praelibitia titicaca Roewer, 1956, are respectively syn- onymized with Platygyndes Roewer, 1943 and its type species Platygyndes titicaca Roewer, 1943, and fur- thermore the genus is transferred from the Gonyleptidae to the Cosmetidae. On the basis of domed and unarmed ocularium, increased number of granules on scutal areas, unarmed dorsal scutum and general body shape, Platygyndes seems to be closely related to Moselabius Roewer, 1956 and Caracarana Roewer, 1956. External morphological characters that are useful to revealing relationships among cosmetid genera are discussed. Phylogenetics and morphology evolution of the family Cosmetidae Koch, 1839 (Arachnida: Opiliones): The Curious Case of Cosmetidae.
