Putting togeth er a string of birdies on the back nine of the Breezy Bend fina t round on his home course, 29-year-old Garth Collings of Breezy Bend captured the 1987 Manitoba men's amateur golf championship. A pair of golfers from Pine Ridge led Ihe qualifiers, but it was 20·year·old GI nn Collins of SI. Charles Country Club who carne Ihrough In Ihe rnalches to win the 1987 Jack Blair Memorial match play championship. It was the first major Manitoba tournament win for the young St. Charlos player, a golf scholarship student at Midland College at Midland, Toxas. He had played on Ihree provincial junior teams and was Iwlce runner·up in the Manitoba junior championships. The Blair event Is annually the kickoff tournamenl on Ihe MGA calendar and Collins tock advantage of having playod golf through the winter monlhs as he displayed gocd shooting and putting under pressure. Collins won the litle with a 4·and·3 victory over Rossmore's 22·year·old Rob Oliphant in the final atlhe St. Boniface Golf Club, where all matches were played. The qualifying rounds for 1987 were played at Glendale Glenn COllin., St. Cherie. and Wildewood and it was another pair of young college Jack Blair match play champ players who led the way - Glen Hnatiuk and Darcy Furber, both of Pine Ridge, finishing with 36·hole tOlals of 142.
