Scratchpads provide the necessary tools to allow you to mobilize and link your biodiversity data. Import and link data from multiple biodiversity resources and allow your data to be re-used with attribution in global biodiversity initiatives like the Encyclopedia of Life and GBIF. Anyone who uses your data will cite you for your contribution. Signing up for a Scratchpad is free, quick and simple! No knowledge of website creation is required and your site can cover any aspect of natural history: a taxonomic group, a geographical area, a club or society, a journal, etc. Currently Scratchpads are supported financially by the following projects and organisations: ViBRANT (http:// vbrant. eu/), eMonocot project (http://www.e-monocot.org/) and the Natural History Museum London (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/). We reconstructed its phylogeny in order to test species delimitation and to find evolutionary drivers forming recent Blastenia diversity. The origin of Blastenia is dated to the early Tertiary period, but later diversification events are distinctly younger. We recognized 24 species (plus 2 subspecies) within 6 infrageneric groups. Each species strongly prefers a single type of substrate (17 species occur on organic substrates, 7 on siliceous rock), and most infrageneric groups also show a clear substrate preference.

In contrast to other natural objects situated within boundaries of the city of Poznań, the former ecological site “Bogdanka” distinguishes itself by its exceptional flo- ristic values. The flora of this object comprises 527 taxons of vascular plants derived from 91 families and 295 genera, of which 180 can be found on rare and threatened species lists. In addition, 15 species under legal protection as well as 34 species from all country and regional lists of rare and endangered species occur here. The most valuable floristic elements include: Iris sibirica, Galium odoratum, Hierohloë odorata, Trollius europaeus or Dianthus superbus. Several trees with monumental or close to monumental circumfer- ences as well as splendid trees can also be found in this site. The area should regain its protected status as soon as possible. Key words: vascular plants, flora of the city of Poznań, Bogdanka River valley INTRODUCTION Set against the background of natural objects situated within the boundaries of the city of Poznań, the Bogdanka River valley belongs to areas distinguished for the occur- rence of plant sites and communities most similar to natural. It constitutes an important element of ring and wedge-shaped systems of urban greeneries which form part of the north-western (Golęcin) wedges of green areas [Janyszek et al.

Abstract This study was carried out to provide the baseline data on the composition and distribution of the angiosperms and to assess their current status in Rajkandi Reserve Forest of Moulvibazar, Bangladesh. The study reports a total of 549 angiosperm species belonging to 123 families, 98 (79.67%) of which consisting of 418 species under 316 genera belong to Magnoliopsida (dicotyledons), and the remaining 25 (20.33%) comprising 132 species of 96 genera to Liliopsida (monocotyledons). Rubiaceae with 30 species is recognized as the largest family in Magnoliopsida followed by Euphorbiaceae with 24 and Fabaceae with 22 species; whereas, in Lilliopsida Poaceae with 32 species is found to be the largest family followed by Cyperaceae and Araceae with 17 and 15 species, respectively. Ficus is found to be the largest genus with 12 species followed by Ipomoea, Cyperus and Dioscorea with five species each. Rajkandi Reserve Forest is dominated by the herbs (284 species) followed by trees (130 species), shrubs (125 species), and lianas (10 species). Woodlands are found to be the most common habitat of angiosperms. A total of 387 species growing in this area are found to be economically useful. 25 species listed in Red Data Book of Bangladesh under different threatened categories are found under Lower Risk (LR) category in this study area.

Received 31 July 2014; Accepted 21 October 2014 A detailed morphological study of the leaf epidermis of some species in the genera Bauhinia Linn., Caesalpinia Linn. Daniellia Hutch. & Dalz. and Senna Linn in Nigeria was undertaken in search of useful and stable taxonomic characters. The study reveals several interesting epidermal features some of which are novel in the genera. Leaf epidermal characters such as epidermal cell types, stomata types and the presence of trichomes were constant in some species and variable in others, making them to be of great significance in determining the relationships among and within species. Stomata were amphistomatic in all the species except in Senna alata, Senna siamea and Senna siberiana which are epistomatic. The species showed variability in their stomata length, width, density and index, which was reflected in their taxonomic delimitations. Key words: Taxonomy, Leaf epidermis, Bauhinia, Caesalpinia, Daniellia, Senna. INTRODUCTION Caesalpinoideae is a large sub-family of about 150 woodland types and on anthills 150 to 1800 m high; their genera with 2200 to 3000 species of flowering plants in seeds serve as food and their shoot as vegetables.

  • Cytotaxonomy of the Monopodial Orchids of the African and Malagasy Regions
Cytotaxonomy of the monopodial orchids of the African and Malagasy regions J. C. Arends & F. M. Van der Laan Department of Plant Taxonomy and Plant Geography, Agricultural University, Gen. Foulkesweg 37, 6700 ED Wageningen, The Netherlands Abstract The three subtribes which are recognized within the tribe Vandeae are represented in the tropical African and Malagasy regions. All taxa of the Vandeae have a monopodial growth habit. The first subtribe, Sarcanthinae, is mainly Asian-Australasian, but a few of its species occur in Madagascar and in Africa. The other two subtribes, Angraecinae and Aerangidinae, are both represented in the latter two regions. The Angraecinae ischaracterize d by the presence of a short rostellum, but this iselongate d in the Aerangidinae. According to earlier authors there is a correlation between presence of the short rostellum and a basic chromosome number of x= 19i nth e Angraecinae, and between the presence of an elongated rostellum and a basic number of x = 25 in the Aerangidinae. The results presented in this paper are placed in perspective with the chromosome numbers recorded by other authors. From the resulting chromosome number survey it appears that only part of the Angraecinae (Aeranthes, several species of Angraecum. Cryptopus and Jumellea) have a basic number of x = 19; some members of the Angraecinae (other species of Angraecum) were found to have a basic number of x = 21,24 and 25. The Aerangidinae is not characterized by a single basic number of x= 25 but by aserie s ranging from x = 23t o x= 27,o f which x= 23,24 and 25ar e the most frequent.
