S. Hitchcock and Paul C. Standley published their succinct manual in 1919 for the identification of the vascular flora in the Washington, DC, area. A comparable new manual has long been needed. As with their work, such a manual should be produced through a collaborative effort of the region’s botanists and other experts. The Annotated Checklist is offered as a first step, in the hope that it will spark and facilitate that effort. In preparing this checklist, Shetler has been responsible for the taxonomy and nomenclature and Orli for the database. We have chosen to distribute the first part in preliminary form, so that it can be used, criticized, and revised while it is current and the second part (Monocotyledons) is still in progress. Additions, corrections, and comments are welcome. We hope that our checklist will stimulate a new wave of fieldwork to check on the current status of the local flora relative to what is reported here. When Part II is finished, the two parts will be combined into a single publication. We also maintain a Web site for the Flora of the Washington-Baltimore Area, and the database can be searched there (http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/dcflora). -

Congress conclusions _____________________________________________________________________________________ CONGRESS CONCLUSIONS The scientific programme addressed 8 themes and consisted of 13 plenary addresses 27 parallel sessions, of which 12 were organised symposia on special topics 136 talks 3 panel discussions Feedback from each session was provided, and these were divided into three main themes: Strategies and targets Conservation action Engaging with society Strategies and targets The Congress has provided an opportunity to gauge the success of the International Agenda and the GSPC in providing a framework for action by botanic gardens.The GSPC has provided a clear framework – all targets are being addressed. No matter how many targets botanic gardens are working on, they are making valuable contributions to the GSPC. 2010 has provided a clear goal and accelerated progress. For example, Target 1 has been particularly successful. However, the long-term sustainability of deliverables must also be considered. The enhanced dissemination and impact of the GSPC outcomes will depend on a closer collaboration between science, conservation and education practitioners within the botanic garden. As well as the GSPC, botanic gardens need to engage with other key global policies and strategies – such as the UNFCCC, Millennium Development Goals, World Heritage Convention and the Access and Benefit Sharing provisions of the CBD. We need to develop wider partnerships beyond the BG community. Botanic gardens need to continue sharing information and resources and develop informal and formal partnerships, promoting their successes and the benefits of working together. Even though legume nitrogen contribution can enhance ecosystem productivity, a critical number of native herbaceous legume species are not commercially available for grassland seed mixes in the south-central US. Of those on the market from other regions, perennial temperate species fail to survive the hot summer seasons, and the tropical species lack sufficient cold tolerance for winter survival through most of the region. We examine histor- ical and current efforts to identify appropriate genotypes to supply native legume seed in Texas and immediate surroundings as a case study for developing a widely under- utilized resource in this and other regions. More than 30 native legume genera occur across this region, often as small, isolated, and protected populations. Several recent native le gume releases target forage production, grassland reclamation, and wildlife habitat, but the seed available meets only small-scale demands and lacks diversity. Wider germplasm adaptation, less costly seed production, and improved marketing may increase demand and economic viability of multiple native legume seeds in restoration, right-of-way sta- bilization, rangeland rehabilitation, and pasture cultivation. Systematic germplasm selec- tion that focuses on potential market, seed harvestability, seedling vigor, and persistence under inter-plant competition and grazing pressures could substantially increase native legume domestication and sustained commercialization.
