Join us over the holiday weekend, Friday, June 29-Monday, July 2 , for Canada Day: Going Global presented by CIBC.

Canada is a place where cultures collide, producing a constant and rich output of creativity and innovation that seems disproportionate to our population. Whether it’s a group like Airplane Boys , who have been turning international hip-hop heads, or the humble poutine and its rise through the international gourmet scene alongside local chefs who are reinventing it, the world is paying attention to what we have to offer.

This Canada Day, Harbourfront Centre highlights and celebrates the achievements of trailblazers and influential art forms that have left their mark on both the Canadian and international cultural landscape with a variety of music, dance, literary, culinary, family and other performances and activities.

CANADA DAY: GOING GLOBAL LISTINGS

MUSIC DJ Manifest (Fri, June 29 at 7 p.m., Sat, June 30 at 7 & 9 p.m., Sun, July 1 at 7:30 & 9 p.m., Mon, July 2 at 1 p.m. ) Moving flawlessly from House to Top40, Hip Hop to Rock, Reggae to Soca DJ Manifest is a gifted professional at his craft and easily one of Canada's more experienced and highly regarded radio and club personalities.

Airplane Boys (Fri, June 29 at 10 p.m. ) Toronto’s Airplane Boys are set to take off in their hometown as they already have outside of Canada: One of a handful of Canadian acts at Coachella, the group has toured the world alongside Snoop Dogg and is pushing musical boundaries, sending synth-infused mixtapes and striking videos into the hearts, minds and booties of the international hip hop masses. The band’s governing body, the Beau Monde Collective, is a multi- disciplinary art collective that transform their live sets into a multi-media experience.

Corey Harris (Sat, June 30 at 2 p.m. ) Corey Harris is a master of connecting seemingly disparate genres into a mesmerizing whole, whether creating a “Rasta ” sound or joining Mississippi to with the legendary Ali Farka Toure. Harris was featured on , ’s 2003 mini-series, appeared on Johnny’s Blues: A Tribute to Johnny Cash , collaborated with and on , and, in 2007, was named a MacArthur Fellow, receiving what is commonly known as the “genius grant” of half a million dollars.

Spectrum: Global Bollywood Music (Sat, June 30 at 4 p.m. ) Part of the Spectrum initiative (see Dance event listings) Global Bollywood highlights the genius of celebrated music directors through live music and interactive dance.

Toronto All-Star Big Band ( Sat, June 30 at 7 p.m., Sun, July 1 at 6:30 p.m., Mon, July 2 at 5:30 p.m. ) An exciting young orchestra delivering a smart musical production steeped in nostalgia, made new with fresh exuberance and startling talent. Offering one of the most intense and stimulating youth music programs in Canada, the group engages top young artists in a rigorous regime of rehearsals, workshops and master classes offering rare opportunities for the next generation.

Johnny Clegg (Sat, June 30 at 9:30 p.m. ) An influential South African musician who helped bridge racial and cultural divisions in South Africa and abroad, Clegg is also known as the “White Zulu” for his combination of

Clegg formed Savuka, the first inter-racial band of note in South Africa, and has sold over five million copies over his three decades of work.

Crack of Dawn (Sun, July 1 at 2 p.m. ) By being the first Canadian black band to sign with a major label, Crack of Dawn made it possible for other black, local and indie acts to cross over into the mainstream. Formed in Toronto in 1974, their funk-RnB-disco blend quickly developed a large following on the local club scene and eventually attracted Columbia Records, who signed the band in 1975. The band performed through the 70s and into the 80s, reuniting in the latter half of the decade before its members went on to various mainly music-related, careers. This show is a reunion more than 25 years in the making. A Meet & Greet with the band follows the show, at 3:30 p.m.

“O Canada” Singing Competition ( Sun, July 1 at 4 p.m. ) Put your own spin on our national anthem by submitting your version of “O Canada” to our Facebook O Canada page. A short list of winners will be determined by a panel of judges, and the finalists will sing off on Canada Day at Harbourfront Centre. Zaki Ibrahim (Sun, July 1 at 8 p.m. ) Canadian-born South African singer/songwriter Zaki Ibrahim’s music spans the urban musical spectrum, incorporating a diverse collection of influences from soul to house and hip hop and beyond. She’s shared stages with the Roots, Mos Def, Bedouin Soundclash, Erykah Badu, DJ Fresh, Saul Williams, K’Naan, Tumi and the Volume and more. In 2009, Zaki was named NOW ’s artist of the year and received a Juno nomination for the song “Money.” Her highly-anticipated third release, Every Opposite , is set for a June 2012 release.

Hidden Cameras ( Sun, July 1 at 9:30 p.m. ) After several years’ absence from Canadian stages, Toronto’s favourite “gay church folk” group treks home from Berlin, bringing their special brand of indie pop music. Their collaborative approach to music has included members of Arcade Fire, Final Fantasy and more, helping to create the conditions for the recent Toronto musical explosion and attracting international attention to their music and hometown. The band’s recorded output (7 albums, 9 singles) has been released on Toronto’s Arts and Crafts and UK outfit Rough Trade, while their elaborate live shows feature go-go dancers, choirs and string sections.

SING! Toronto Vocal Art Festival Tent (Mon, July 2 at 1 p.m. ) Canada Day: Going Global festival partners with SING! Toronto Vocal Art Festival to bring a preview to all things a capella under the SING! Umbrella. Come by and visit the tent to listen to the sounds of a range of vocal artists.

FOOD Iron Chef: Poutine Edition (Sun, July 1 at 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m. ) Experience the high stakes of gourmet cooking as chefs compete over the iconic Canadian food that is poutine, incorporating the always-entertaining and challenging secret ingredient. Fresh Ontario garlic scapes – which come from the top part of the garlic plant and have a mild garlic taste – are the key to this dish, which will show kids and parents how easy it is to make your own pasta.

Lake Erie Pickerel with Sautéed Wild Leeks and Double Smoked Bacon (Sun, July 1 at 5 p.m. ) In partnership with Slow Food Toronto, chef Kristin Donovan, proprietor of fish supplier Hooked, demonstrates this recipe for Lake Erie pickerel.

Family Breakdance Worshop (Sat, June 30 at 3 p.m., Mon, July 2 at 1 p.m. ) Canada’s own world-renowned b-boy Corrie Daniels (aka Benzo) leads a workshop to teach the whole family all you’ll need to know about breakin’.

Intro to Lacrosse with Cam Bomberry ( Sun, July 1 at 1 p.m. ) This Canada Day, we celebrate the achievements of trailblazers and influential culture and forms, as well as artists and groups looking to redefine history and blaze a new trail. As Canada’s national sport, lacrosse has forever cemented its place in Canadian identity. Come learn the basics of lacrosse with coach and four-time member of Iroquois’ National team, Cam Bomberry.

Awesome Toronto Central (Sun, July 1 at 1 & 6 p.m. ) The Toronto Awesome Foundation is part of an ever-growing, worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of awesomeness in the universe. Each month Toronto Awesome gives a brown paper bag containing $1000 to a project, no strings attached. Previous Awesome projects include a night of making cardboard forts, an online romantic map of kisses and much more. Stop by to view past winners, learn how to vote on current submissions and pitch your ‘awesome’ project to Awesome Toronto Trustees. LITERARY/SPOKEN WORD Canada Day Poetry Slam (Fri, June 29 at 7:30 p.m. and Sun, July 1 at 3 p.m.) In partnership with the Toronto Poetry Project, Harbourfront Centre brings you the Canada Day Poetry Slam, held over two separate days and showcasing some of the top spoken word talent in the city and beyond. Expect verbal fireworks and heart-wrenching honesty as 8 poets – 2 of which will be chosen from the audience – will perform in a 2-round slam on Friday and the top 4 move on to the Finals on Sunday. Friday's guest poet is C.R. Avery, a British Columbia-based poet-musician-beatboxer; Sunday's guest poet is Dwayne Morgan, the godfather of spoken word in Toronto. Hosted by Dave Silverberg of Toronto Poetry Slam.

FILM Canada Day Shorts: Inuit Film Spotlight ( Sun, July 1 at 9 p.m. ) A family friendly film series that explores our festival theme of Crossroads and places a spotlight on Inuit artists and culture.

Nunavut Animation Lab: The Bear Facts Dir: Jonathan Wright, 2010 In this charming and humorous re-imagining of first contact between Inuit and European, a colonial explorer emerges from a sailing ship and plants a flag on the Arctic ice, as a bemused Inuit hunter looks on.

Nunavut Animation Lab: I Am But a Little Woman Dir: Gyu Oh, 2010 Inspired by an Inuit poem, this short film evokes the beauty and power of nature, and the bond between mother and daughter. In it, a girl watches her mother create a wall hanging that starts to blurs the boundary between reality and art.

Nunavut Animation Lab: Qalupalik Dir: Ame Papatsie, 2010 This animated short tells the story of Qalupalik, a sea monster that lives deep in the Arctic Ocean and preys on children who do not listen to their parents or elders. Angutii, a young boy who refuses to help his family, is seized by the monster, and his father goes to great lengths to bring him home.

Islet Dir: Nicolas Brault, 2003 Combining figurative abstraction with magic realism, this cautionary tale, reminiscent of the stark simplicity of Inuit art, reminds us of the interconnectedness of all things and that the Arctic’s fate is ours as well.

Northern Games Dir: Ken Buck, 1981 This short documentary depicts the traditional games of the Inuit as youth from communities across the North compete.

Film Series: Global Dance Shorts (Fri, June 29 and Sat, June 30 at 9:30 p.m. ) The shorts in this series take an international perspective on various forms of dance, featuring dancers, directors, and choreographers from around the world.
